  3. Bevel and then I usually roll it out on a hard smooth surface like a counter top or something like that.
  4. It would help if you were a little more specific with your wants in calculations. For instance, Do you need a way to calculate the length of strands that it will take to braid around the whole core? Will you also need core diameter? There are reasons for being specific. Each calculation can either have room for overage, or the calculations can be precise. For instance, If you have a given core size, you will need to know how many strands will fit around that core and how much length is needed to braid the length and radius of that given core size. 5. We don't know what you've done yet. Maybe a photo of what you have completed might help.
  6. From the album: Misc Leather Works

This is done with rounded leather. I forget how many bights it is. But it was my first one of that size.

  7. Nice work. But I think you mean the math part of the TH. That's quite an ambitious set out if I might say. But there is more TH's out there. Many more TH's to be made and so little time to do them.

    a new arrival

Hi all. Thank you troy for the kind comment. I am only the designer of that tool. The one who made it deserves the applause the most. My buddy PJ is awsome with a lathe and the CNC mill. The fid handle is Olive wood and the fid shaft is stainless steel.
  9. You might have to update your FF to the latest one, or try out google chrome or use IE.
  10. If I am not using the lace maker to cut my lace with then I am cutting the lace from my cutter beveler in a spiral technique. When I am cutting lace that way I will usually cut the hide in wider strips, say about 1/2" wide. Then I will apply some Picards dressing and then stretch the 1/2" strap over night. I then will cut my 1/8" wide lace from that 1/2" strap, usually yielding 4 1/8" strings. Now how long they are depends on the size of the cut circle. When I bevel the 1/8" strings, I'm just scraping the bottom of the string at 45 degrees only removing the under side of the flesh side only. That's how I do it, but everyone is different in the way they do that kind of cutting. The way I do it is a little slower and not as efficient as most would view it. But I like my lace to be top quality when I am done cutting. The quality of your braids start at the quality of the cut and the bevel. Brian...
  11. I have a calculator on my site that you can use if you want. http://khww.net/viewpage.php?page_id=4
  12. Nice work. I like the view better, thank you. I couldn't see any of the knots in the first post. I like what ya did there.
  13. I know I'd like to be able to see more details in the rein. The photo is not quite large enough for that. Everything else is all good.
  14. Here is what is better known as a 4 strand terminal knot, or stopper knot. It takes on the form of a turks head. But the original was a single strand chinese button knot. Which lead to the 1 strand divided in half to make a 2 strand version. You will notice that the 4 strand version use the crowning technique to achieve the same look as the 2 strand and single strand versions. If a person so desired, they could even extend the two strand version and the 4 strand version even longer, or wider depending on how you view it. Brian...
  15. You'll have to give a more specific web address than that. I find 3 or 4 and more head stalls that you could be referring to.
  16. Here's a video from youtube.com A little searching can turn up a lot of good stuff.
  17. You're welcome. But the authors are the ones who deserve it more than Ido. Especially my friend Bud who made those tutorials. He's now passedaway. But lives on through his instructions. He also was a hide pounderas well as a good braider. He also, turned all of his own marlin spikesand fids as well as sending me a bunch of tools like that. I have asample piece of his hide pounding in the form of a leather holster madefor a 9mm. I have attached a few images of that holster he made. I plan on using it some day. ehehehehe... Freedom aint free...
  18. A couple of tutorials here, Top Braid Top Braid Grommet - This one here will show you how to close the braid when done. Brian...
  19. Why not start learning the Gaucho by first doing it from a 5part 4bight turks head first. Make your 5part 4bight base turks head first. I have the instructions here, Gaucho Knot - From a 5x4TH My friend and colleague whom is now passed away make this tutorial. In post #13 above; I don't quite understand the reason behind making a few 5x4 turks heads and then bumping them against the terminal knots. I'm having an absent minded moment and just wondering why is all. Brian...
  20. Hi Megabit. Well the herringbone knot is going to give the look that is very similar to a heel knot, or even a one strand pineapple knot. However all three are tied a bit different than the other. A gaucho will give you a vertical look of a zigzag, or right and left zigzag look. Yes, the herringbone will turn in on the base knot much like the pineapple knot type 1 does, and the gaucho you are basically creating a new interweave by adding another bight in between bights. That's the whole aim of communities like mine and this one. To promote, instruct and follow through making sure to never leave anyone behind if it can be helped. There may some mathematics and science to it also. LOL... You're welcome and thank you for the generous comments. Brian...
  21. Hi megabit. The strands going right should continue to follow the bight until you can't go anymore without starting a 3rd ply, or 3rd pass. Believe it or not, it does all workout properly. Prototype looks really good too. Brian...
  22. The button knot is a Ginifer knot. I don't think you looked everywhere on the net for it. Here is a tutorial on that specific knot, Ginfer Knot Tutorial Brian...
  23. If you do get the book. Tell him that Brian from KHWW.NET sent you to him. He's a really neat guy. You should buy the whole kit. You get the book and some needles and some cord with it. He not only made the book but he also in his kits gets you started with the supplies. Brian...

    hackamore

I usually will treat my strings with Pecards leather dressing before doing any edge braiding. As I go along and find that the braiding is starting to get difficult again, or there is a lot of resistance, I will treat my strings with some more leather dressing. I also don't pull my strings really tight either. I will pull it just tight enough to lay the strings down flat and then use a roller of some type to finish that part off. Brian...
  25. I do hope you hear from John. I think he knows what an email is, but I don't know if he knows how to reply. I sent him several emails last year and got no response. Of course I don't have the title Dr. in front of my name either. But the material is well worth having in the library. I do hope you get a response from him. Brian...
