This imput is GREAT - thanks to all. Now I am looking for suggestions as to what steel I need for the blade? Can I use a saw blade if tempered? Any other suggestions please?

I'm afraid that a 12" crank splitter would be way too expensive for me! Even used pull-thru splitters here in Australia are going for $800 -$1,000. I am fairly capable at DIY and nutting out the workings. I would like to be able to post the building of an inexpensive splitter, just need help with the plans please. Lois

First Ranger Style Belt
impulse replied to Shooter McGavin's topic in Gun Holsters, Rifle Slings and Knife Sheathes
Great looking belt! The only thing that I would change is the keeper that the brown section slides into would be better in brown. In my mind it detracts from the lovely two-tone effect. Lois -
Thank you Mike and Wolfe - very helpful imputs! Pics would be great and any other comments welcome. Lois

I previously posted for help in making a splitter and have since been investigating modifying a metal working slip roller. These cost around $175 new and seem to have most of the components needed for a hand cranked splitter. The width of rollers is 300mm(12") and maximum adjustment between rollers is 2.5mm(6-7oz leather), but with modification this could be made to accept thicker. I am looking at the possibility of replacing the third roller at the back with a blade. I would need to get the angle right, something I need your help with. Anyone think that this is a feasible solution? Lois BTW the wire rolling grooves at the end of the rollers could make interesting border patterns!

For future reference - nail polish remover is just acetone which is very cheap at your local hardware store.

That would be MUCH appreciated, thank you! Lois

Making A Metal Belt Keeper
impulse replied to LeatherLegion's topic in Purses, Wallets, Belts and Miscellaneous Pocket Items
I've worked a lot with brass and I think you will find that rod will need to be heated to bend it without fracturing. Your jig is great for flat brass, but would not work for rod. BTW thanks for sharing. Lois -
Thank you for your reply, but I am not looking for a lace splitter - I want to build a more substantial 6" to 10" steel leather splitter. Lois

I make some of my own leathercraft tools and would like to build a splitter. My problem is that I have not even seen one in action and find it difficult to work out the critical design from pictures as there is such a variety around. Can someone please clarify with pictures and/or drawings of the parts required, angle of cutting blade, roller configuration etc....... Even if I could get a copy of a maker's manual that would help considerably. Where I live there is no Tandys, no Leather workers guild or any Leathercaft classes where I can get the information. Any help would be much appreciated. Lois

Stamps can be made from anything that you can fit under an Arbor press or workshop press. I found some interesting shapes at a general craft shop. They are called jewelry "findings" and made from brass. As per pic, they come in packs of 3 for around $2.75. I simply filed off the attachment loops and super-glued them to some scrap aluminum to make sure they didn't bend in the press. I have also made stamps from metal buttons glued to wood.

I have an opportunity to buy an Industrial fabric cutting machine, but I don't have the option of trying it out. Has anyone here used similar to cut leather? If so what weight leather do you think it will handle? Any imput is appreciated.

Came across this 1904 publication entitled "Harness Making" by Paul Hasluck. The illustrations show that we are still using the same tools now!

Fully Tooled Ladies Vest

Nice work! However, being a woman I think it would fit a man better, as there is no provision for those chest protrusions that most females have?! -
Newbie With An Extremely Basic Question About Awls
impulse replied to eminart's topic in Sewing Leather
As you now have removable blades........... If you have access to a drill press, try fixing the blade in the drill chuck and bring the lever down to pierce the leather. DO NOT turn the drill press on - it is just the lever action that you require, and not much force. This gives great control for placing the holes and a consistent angle of entry - and the needle slides into the hole in the platform below the leather, keeping it sharp. Alternatively for thinner leathers, place a piece of cork underneath. Cheers Lois -
Try this: Lightly score a line with an adjustable stitching groover whilst the leather is dry. Case the leather then go over the line with your edge creaser, making sure that the adjustment matches that of the stitch groover. This will help you stay "in the tracks". Heating the creaser may help at this stage, but try it cold first as it can be tricky to get the right temperature. Cheers Lois

Cheap Mallet/maul That Weighs More Than The Tandy Kit
impulse replied to LilRay's topic in Leather Tools
Hi Ray I'm on a tight budget, so can also recommend a dead-blow hammer - 3lb. I found, with some of the smaller stamps, the rubber surface was becoming chipped so I glued (using contact adhesive) discs of heavy leather (flesh side out) to each face of the hammer. Has been working perfectly now for about a year. Cheers Lois -
