  1. Hi all, I just saw this wallet advertised and it caught my eye. http://www.trihold.com/ I started thinking how I would put something similar together and I came up with the following design and pattern. Free to anyone who wants to use it. The pieces are pretty easy to cut out so I wouldn't think you'd need to take the file to a large format printer like the others but, if you feel the need, the printed size is 24x18 Have fun! Minimalist Tri-Fold.pdf
  2. Levi, Ohio Travel Bag makes them in several sizes. I based the design in my plans on the middle one, If you are going to make one from my plans, there is a flaw in the design and that is that you will have to bend one of the pieces so that it fits completely inside the other piece. The way I show it on the plans, the clasp wont close. I would adjust the bends of the 'inside' frame piece to accommodate double the thickness of leather that you're using so that you can wrap the leather about both frame pieces and have it close. I fixed the flaw and re-uploaded the design here: Good luck DRS BAG 1.pdf
  3. I thought about that but Fair Use in copyright laws allows up to 10% of someone else's published work to be used. Also, since I am not doing this for any commercial gain...Tandy can be upset but there's not a whole lot that they can legally do about it. It is within the law
  4. Thanks to NV Leatherworx for pointing out a flaw in my design. I fixed it and made the card slots 1/4" wider each which had the affect of lengthening the walled by 1/2". I uploaded the revised pattern here biker wallet-revised.pdf
  5. ETW Grumpy sent out a call for a Dr's Bag pattern and Butch was kind enough to upload sketches and drawings of one that he has. I thought I'd take it one step further and see how I would assemble that bag. Ohio Travel Bag carries frames for the Dr's bag. But anyone with access to bench vise and a grinder and drill press can create their own. I included those instructions as well. I didn't include sizes for the chicago screws and washers that would provide the hinge for the frame because I sort of did this on the fly without going to the store and sizing them myself so I just winged that. You'll have to verify those sizes yourself. I also included instructions from the AL Stohlman's book on making the handles but Ohio Travel Bag carries those as well. As usual, the drawings are 32X24 and can be printed off at any Kinkos or Office Depot or anywhere with a large format printer. Special thanks to Butch for providing the drawings that I was able to create this patter from It shouldn't be too difficult a bag to put together. If anyone has questions shoot me a line. Regards, Tom DRS BAG 1.pdf DRS BAG 2.pdf page 13.pdf
  6. So, excuse a question that might make me look stupid but, why didn't you dye it before you laced it up? it looks fantastic by the way
  7. Hey guys! I just got off the phone with the manager of the Tandy store in Orem Utah and she has agreed to allow a leatherworkers guild to meet there on Saturdays. If there's any interest from local people in getting together and honing our skills, sharing tips, patterns, etc...let me know!
  8. Here in Salt Lake City, whenever I've needed a pattern quickly, I turn to Beck Leather. Quick turnaround (I've had it done while I wait) but a bit more pricey than Black River beckleather.com
  9. Here's an easy pattern for a cover to one of those marbleized composition notebooks, I took a quick picture with my phone of the one I made a while back. Sorry for the poor picture quality. The pattern is in PDF format. 24X18. It can be printed at any Kinkos, Office Depot, Staples, or anywhere with a large format printer Enjoy, Tom compcover-Paper.pdf
  10. Thanks, I've been working with CAD so long that it's actually faster than doing something by hand for me. This took me about 45 minutes to put together
  11. Craftsman 827 put out a call for a biker wallet. I posted this under his topic but, since it was a call for a pattern, I'm not sure how many people would look at the thread and I wanted to give as many a chance to download as wanted. I know the last pattern I posted was downloaded a few hundred times so...enjoy: My son has been wanting one and I like the way the picture you sent looks so I went ahead and whipped up a pattern based on that design. You didn't post dimensions so I just eyeballed it and ended up with a wallet that will be 7" X 3-3/4" when folded. If it were me, I'd do all the interior parts out of 2 oz kip leather and the exterior out of 4-5 oz leather. The PDF file is 36"X24" so you'll have to take it to a Kinkos or Office Depot or anyplace with a large format printer to get it printed out. If you have a friend who is an architect or engineer working with CAD, they can probably for it for you from their office. I put assembly instructions for how I intend to put it together but you might come up with a different/better way. If you do, let me know Good luck with it. I won't be making one for my son for a month or two. His Birthday at the end of October so he'll either get it for that or Christmas. If you end up making it before I do, post a picture so I can see how it came out Regards, Tom sorry, I accidentally posted this twice. If an admin could remove the duplicate thread I'd be in your debt BIKER WALLET.pdf

  13. My wife's mother was like that. She had to be the bride at every wedding and the corpse at every funeral. I grew up with a love of classical music and, whenever I was driving, I would play it on the radio. When my wife is in the car, she will often ask me which piece is playing and, I will tell her, if I know it. If her mother was in the car as well, she would often agree with me in a slightly surprised and condescending tone. I started wondering if she really knew the genre that well and so started giving my wife wrong answers on purpose....same agreeing comments, condescending tones. I finally laughed and told her was I was doing...the woman never spoke to me again. Best thing that could have happened to both my wife and I
  14. Has anyone had any luck thinning down chrome or deertan leather? Any tips or tricks you want to pass on?
  15. I was thinking the same thing. My wife has a terrible allergy to latex and it started suddenly in her adult life.
  16. I'm hoping some seasoned pros can provide me with some ideas here. My Son-In-Law has requested a Batman guitar strap and I've tried several times to get the logo down. The problem I seem to be having is I use a backgrounder on the yellow portion of the logo and that seems to give me good definition raising the Bat symbol up high. I have no problem when I dye the yellow portion but, when I go to dye the black portion, I can't seem to keep the dye from wicking into the yellow portion. I'd really like to get a crisp separation between the two colors...any ideas? That latex thing seemed to be the ticket until I read it would not be good for dyed leather Thanks in advance
  17. Realm13, Dee shields are for placing Dee Rings onto the sides of the gusset (for the shoulder straps) and for attaching the handle to the top of the bag. Similar to what is shown here:
  18. Sorry that happened but glad you're all okay!
  19. Thanks. I've been toying with the idea for a long time but wasn't sure how to provide the clamping easily and then I ran across these push-pull toggle clamps and they just seemed to be tailor made for this kind of application. You can get them for about 8 bucks apiece off of Amazon.com I think the whole thing can be built for under 40 dollars
  20. I downloaded this pattern from a Spanish website about a year back. Haven't made the purse yet but I did manage to get a picture of what the end product should look like. I translated from Spanish to English and from millimeters to inches and plotted it up on a PDF file. As before, you can take it to any office supply or print shop with a large format printer. The final print will be 42"x 30" If anyone makes one before me, upload the picture! I'd like to see it bolsa.pdf
  21. Hi guys, I'm in the process of building benches for my shop and have decided to design and build a permanent jig for holding belts (see attached PDF file) I figure the push/pull toggle clamps with the neoprene pads would be perfect for clamping and holding belts and glued liner together while the glue dried and then I can use the jig as a stitching clamp later by bringing the belt up and exposing the side I'm currently stitching. It ought to make dyeing edges a lot easier as well. I've designed it so that the belt will be sandwiched by (2) 1/4" thick pads of neoprene but I'm not sure if that will have any sort of chemical reaction to the leather...anyone out there know how that would work out? belt clamp.pdf
  22. I got a nice 18" x 48" x 1-1/4" slab of granite at the local Habitat for Humanity Re-Store. Cost me 15 bucks
  23. You can get free CAD programs off the web. Here's a link: http://cad.about.com/od/Personal_CAD/tp/Five-Top-Free-Cad-Packages.htm
  24. I use a drafting program called AutoCad then I just print it up in PDF format
  25. I've spent 35 years as an engineer so figuring out how things go together and putting them on plans is what I do
