My Wife's Purse
Beaverslayer replied to Ferg's topic in Purses, Wallets, Belts and Miscellaneous Pocket Items
Very nice craftsmanship Ferg, is the purse made with veg tan? The little wallet is a real nice color. -
Billy, that's a great idea about the x-ray film, a window showing that broken bone would be a real cool conversation piece.

Billy, an interesting point you bring up regarding "re-purposing". If someone where to take an old Louis Vuitton purse and cut it all up, but then resew it together as a different purse, then market and sell them as "Re-Purposed", would this still not fall under some sort of Trademark infringement? As to the holster that this customer wants made, using either "Fake" or "re-purposed" Louis Vuitton material, I would think the same would apply as well. If Louis Vuitton saw a holster with their logo emblazoned all over it I believe they would have reasonable grounds for a lawsuit. You would still be "Representing" to the general public that this is a Louis Vuitton holster. I agree, it would be a cool looking holster, but I still would not take on the job for the reasons I've said before. The re-purposing is a very interesting question though, I'm thinking I'll do a bit of research on this.

Aging leather can be done so many different ways, it all boils down to how aged you want it, and the amount of time/money you want to invest in doing it. The best way to age it (once it is dyed) is to get an old clothes dryer...disconnect the heating element before using it. Gather up a bunch of small river stones (rounded edged ones...not sharp edged) and place your leather and stones into the dryer...turn it on and let it run for a while. Check every 10 to 15 minutes and you'll get an idea of how long you need to run it to achieve the desired effect. Cheaper ways of aging leather is you can "Beat It" with a multitude of items usually found in any home or garage.

Looking For Some Ideas What To Do With My Deer
Beaverslayer replied to Wise Owl Studios's topic in Leatherwork Conversation
Well first off. White Deer hide is going to show dirt real fast and real easy, so I'd nix the inside of a cuff as a use for it. I've use it in the past, made a complete ensemble for a lady with a Hat (baseball style with tooled and painted rim) fancy belt again with tooled and painted roses, as well as a vest/waistcoat and purse/handbag. All the above mentioned items were laced together rather than sewing. Deer hide makes some very nice lace and it will be the same color as the item you make out of the deer hide. You could always make a few ladies purse/handbags and do some stingray inlays, I think they would be profitable. -
You will not find any reputable tannery or leather supply company that is even going to stock or have access to Louis Vuitton embossed leather. It would infringe GREATLY on Trademark and Copyright Laws in ANY Country. I've been asked a number of times if I could tool such logos as Gucci, Louis Vuitton, Coach and a few others and have always declined explaining I don't do "Knock Offs.

No pictures of Cheque Book covers, as they aren't a popular thing up here in Canada (because we spell Check wrong maybe)...Laminating Lambskin to Lambskin does have a fair amount of "body" to it though. I've done a number of purse/handbags that way and never a problem. Also, laminating Lambskin to 2/3 oz veg tan is still quite soft yet still nice and firm as cheque/check book covers should be. I've also done some purse/handbags this way as well. With either one of the above mentioned ways, or as you suggested with upholstery leather, you can either burnish, "Kevin King" it or even lace it on the edges.

Simon, I myself have never purchased them from Zack White, but I believe they are a very reputable supplier. The description they give on the page reads: Our Jeffy Rivets are made of solid brass (SB), or solid brass with a nickle plate (NSB). They come in several lengths to suit hundreds of applications for leather crafting and leather working. Jeffy Rivets also come in two different cap Styles. The Single cap style has an eyelet that is open and visible on the underside of the post. The Double Cap Style adds a finished appearance to both sides by adding a cap to match the top. So I would take this as a "Yes" they are solid brass.

Zack White has them, here's the link.... http://www.zackwhite.com/Solid-Brass-732in-Post-316in-double-cap-Jiffy-Rivet-100-ct_p_1700.html

denisa, Those are not punched with a specific style punch, they are made by punching a round hole at each end of the slit, then using a sharp knife and straight edge cut between the two round holes.

What Do You Print On Your Business Cards?
Beaverslayer replied to Chavez's topic in Marketing and Advertising
Here's what my business card looks like. The possibilities are endless when it comes to business cards. I got mine from www.vistaprint.ca They have complete design functionality on their website, you can do whatever you want. I got 500 cards with printing on the front and back, along with a Fancy engraved stainless steel card holder for $46.00 shipping included. My sons tattoo shop got all theirs done there as well, over 4000 cards and 8 of the fancy card holders for under $100.00....quantity ordering saves a great deal. -
Chap leather would be a good choice, but depending on the type of dog the straps will be for, is another factor. A 130 pound Rotti, is will most likely tear it apart within the first day, while a Chihuahua it will last a lifetime.

What Is Sodium Sulfite Use For?
Beaverslayer replied to Blevins60's topic in Leatherwork Conversation
Sodium sulfite (sodium sulphite) is a soluble sodium salt of sulfurous acid with the chemical formula Na2SO3. It is a product of sulfur dioxide scrubbing, a part of the flue-gas desulfurization process. It is also used as a preservative to prevent dried fruit from discoloring, and for preserving meats, and is used in the same way as sodium thiosulfate to convert elemental halogens to their respective hydrohalic acids, in photography and for reducing chlorine levels in pools. -
It looks kind of like a copper rivet, the kind you place a small washer over, then peen the end until it wraps around the washer.

I would think that they would have to be "Forced" together, as with the jaws of a vise. If yo use a vise, I'd suggest you line the jaws with some veg tan first.

Google Search Results Containing Malware
Beaverslayer replied to Dennis Oakley's topic in Feedback and Suggestions
Johanna, the tinfoil hat has been welded to my glasses for a little over 4 years now. It's real hard to clean my glasses to be able to see what I'm doing as neither hat nor glasses will come off my head. I've been thinking of adding a few tinfoil antennas to add a bit of oomph to its powers.... -

Google Search Results Containing Malware
Beaverslayer replied to Dennis Oakley's topic in Feedback and Suggestions
yes, cleared cache, history everything. I just did a whole bunch more Google searches that would bring up Leatherworker.net results, but none of them redirected. I do recall on one of the forum discussions related to this, where the ADMIN found hacked code in his IPB software (in a cache file). He said that the code was programmed to only activate/run every 10 minutes. It was written: 36000/60/60 or something like that. -
Google Search Results Containing Malware
Beaverslayer replied to Dennis Oakley's topic in Feedback and Suggestions
Yes, I just did a search for "Buck Stitch Material" and chose the second Google result, same thing happened as before...redirected to a spam site and MyWOT shut it down. I wasn't quick enough to catch the url before it changed a second time in the address bar either, so I can't add it to my blocked list. -
Ah, but Kevin, are all 14 of those envelopes filled with your beautiful wallets????

edge, It all really depends on what exactly you want to do with leather as too where you start. For example: I see amazing saddles posted on this forum, but know I can't just head to Tandy, buy a bunch of expensive stuff and go home and make one myself. I myself didn't start tooling leather until I had been working with leather for about 4 years I think it was. I remember someone commenting on a post I did with tooling in it, and they were amazed I even knew how. To this day, I still don't do a lot of tooling (other than skulls) as I know I'm not that good at it. The same goes with me and using a sewing machine....can't sew straight...no how...no way... so I lace everything I make. The best thing for you, is to choose what you would like to accomplish first, then apply yourself to that until you've become comfortable with it and then move on to the next aspect.

Google Search Results Containing Malware
Beaverslayer replied to Dennis Oakley's topic in Feedback and Suggestions
Well, after reading tons of forums regarding this problem, I added all the offending url4 type addresses into my blocked list. I have Googled many different things, and clicked on many different links leading to many different IPB forums, and so far not one redirect. While searching and reading all about this, it seems like it has been a problem for a number of years, and even to this day, some IPB forum ADMINS are blaming Google as well as users PC's. There is also a few sites that profess to be able to help you remove "Hidden" malware on your computer as long as you send them "LOG FILES" and download multiple software. It seems like these are also some sort of scam, but not sure of what kind. I found this interesting as well. The url4short type address that was redirecting, is listed as the following: URL4SHORT.INFO - free url redirection and masking service Making long and URL-s to smaller and more handy! With our free url redirection and masking service. Checking their WHOIS, showed it as a company from Arizona I believe. Hopefully, Johanna's fix as well as my blocked url list will resolve this from happening again.
