Lacing Is My Life!
ramrod replied to Chief31794's topic in Purses, Wallets, Belts and Miscellaneous Pocket Items
that is a beautiful job on those items. if i really want the "ooohhh"s and "aaaahhhh"s from a leather piece, i'll lace it. it really says hand made. i may not be very popular amongst leatherworkers because of the time involved. much more labor intensive than stitching.....i don't have to tell you that. but, i think customers really prefer it if given a choice. i think that it goes much better with larger items simply because of it's sheer bulk. -
Sense Of Humour Failure Across The Pond......
ramrod replied to ClaireAshton's topic in Leatherwork Conversation
how true!! those brits sure can murder the queen's english. lol i'm not a huge fan of british humor. my sense of humor runs a very narrow field - sarcasm, wit and irony will do it for me. monty python.....meh. i just can't get into it. i'm rather more taken by the british slang and (i'm not sure what it's called - or if there is a term for it) the rhymes they use for simple functions. i can't even give a great example of it. i am on the apriliaforum.com. we have a lot of brits on there and they take a real beating sometimes for their use of the queen's english. gimme that gritty cockney accent every time! -
i had read (and i cannot remember where) that polyester thread is uv resistant but nylon is NOT. did i read that right? i assumed (as was confirmed by a few others here) that it was mostly the beeswax / rosin etc. that keeps linen from rotting.

if you have acces to a grinder (or a dremel) you could hone down an existing awl. or make your own. i made mine out of a hex wrench. it is very thin - thin enough to do 12 spi with no problem. if you are set on buying one, i'd try the goodsjapan awl that was linked. there seems to be very good feedback from that company by leatherworkers on this site. personally speaking, i'd steer clear of the chinese ones. i can't even recall of a decent chinese product i've ever bought.

i used part of a clear shower curtain. thick and very clear.i actually doubled it. it works great.

welcome. yes there is a lot to investigate and learn....one step at a time. you can get it all in. trumansburg? wow! my old stomping grounds...sort of. i used to deliver for staples over at cornell and a few surrounding areas. the finger lakes are beautiful. i miss the clear water.

Leather Wrapped Koozie
ramrod replied to jayjay's topic in Purses, Wallets, Belts and Miscellaneous Pocket Items
been thinking about something like this.....mostly for my coffee mug. i like it. nice job on the rolled lip. i like that detail. -
its on my list of things to buy....someday.

i've seen plenty of wallets, shoes and purses made from the stuff. my brother used to own an ell skin wallet. he said it wore like iron. well, i might buy some. i'm interested in seeing what i can do with it. i've thought of accents as you said, shtoink. that might be the best use for it. i'm sure it would glue down very easy. thanks for all of the replies, everyone.

aha! hagfish eh? they're creepy. but close enough to pass for an eel, i guess. CEM....does it look like you could stitch it without it bunching up at the stitch holes? that would be my next worry. like sewing tissue paper.

I've been thinking about getting some for possibly some wallets...or watch bands. i've never used it - or have even seen it. has any one of you folks out there used it? i've seen it for sale on ebay. one thing i've noticed is that it seems to be extremely thin. paper thin was the description. that would make me think that the product used under the eel skin would have to be perfectly flat etc. comments?

i bought a small amount of it off of ebay last week. .6 mm. i'm working on some watch bands. i love the stuff. very easy to work with. the amount of wax is perfect. and what i really like about it is, since it is woven, it holds the needle better. my linen tends to "strip out" the needle sometimes. this stuff won't do that. oh yeah - and did i mention the color choices?! do yourself a favor and give it a try.

New Wallet!

ooh..very nice. i like the color. stock leather dye or your own creation? -
i want to know who does the music. dayum. great tune.......well, i'm sure it's not cardboard. and it doesn't look like a heavy fabric either.

what comes to mind about these old tools is: i wonder how many of the items it has made are still around. i also think about how far (in distance) many of these have gone after being sold. i bought a #10 overstitch wheel from portland maine. the seller said it was turn of the century from a local leather craftsman. now it's in durham, nc. prolly never left the county all of it's life and now it's 800 miles from where it was used.

i save it for scrap. that's about it. and i have a LOT of scrap.

Side Vs Butt Vs Shoulder Vs Bridle Vs Harness--Which To Use
ramrod replied to leathervan's topic in All About Leather
this is a great question. i've always thought that "sleek and professional" is void of carvings and the like. this isn't a poke at rustic or hippie, but it's what i've noticed in the "manufactured" world of briefcases and the like. although, the occasional maker's mark, well placed, couldn't do any harm. i wonder if some kind of carving wouldn't be cool as in an accent...think of pinstriping on a car. -
Get A Bag To Hold It's Sides In (Permenant Fold In Leather?)
ramrod replied to taiden's topic in How Do I Do That?
i use a fabric stiffener that's sold at a fabric store....joann fabrics carries it. i can't remember the name of it. you buy it by the yard and you can get it in different densities. it's kind of like a white polyester mat. cuts easily with scissors or a knife. it can be glued to the inside of the bag and lined with either fabric or leather. you might want to look into it. -
you could also use some of the fabric reinforcing material that's sold at a fabric store. it's kind of a stiff polyester mat. can't remember the name. i use it to line the belt with before putting on the actual inside pig lining. it bulks up the belt making it feel a lot more substantial and thick. i think it's used on most factory made belts.

Swords Into Plowshares - Sewing Machines Into...
ramrod replied to Constabulary's topic in Leather Sewing Machines
very imaginative....and quite cool. that is, as long as the machines were DEAD before they cannibalized them. -
i've dyed my Barbour's linen thread with leather dye, but it seems to bleed ENDLESSLY!! can't get the color to "set" in it.

i would also like to know how i can purchase this product. do you have any info on pricing and who carries your product?

macca - thank you for posting the pictures! i appreciate it very much. i wonder if, after looking at these pictures, the 832 might be o.k. if smaller holes were used. maybe a smaller awl instad of a pricking iron. just thinking out loud. this brings up another question......if tiger thread (or it's braided equivalent) is used, how do you attach the thread to the needle? surely you can't use the traditional method of piercing the needle and making the loop and then waxing it down, can you?
