  1. I done mainly western style holsters in the past plus one 1911 holster and the slide holster. With the latter I traced the gun and what the shape of the holster to be and added the thickness of the gun down the center line and cut two of the them out sewed them together and put the gun in it to form it it basically form both the front and back equally. I want to design a pancake holster but instead of both the front and back forming I just wish for the front piece to form around the gun leaving the back piece flat. So I was thinking of drawing around the gun adding the outline of the holster to come up with the pattern for the back piece. Now for the front copy it cut it down the center line add twice the thickness of the gun and splice it back together. Trying that and forming it by casing it and tacking it down over a blue gun and thus forming it all on the front piece once dry sew it together and wet the front piece for final fitting and boning. Will this work?
  2. Thinks Jim you know how to get a hold of me.
  3. Try buckaroo bobbins out of Az. She usually has a large assortment of western period patterns and his a good vendor and person to deal with.
  4. Can you or someone who has already used the pattern show what it looks like completed I'm having a hard tim visualizing it.
  5. Jim what's the odds of getting an ebook or pdf copy ogf the yee haa book? You know me I want everything digitally as space in the rv is tight.
  6. I was thinking about if this was a clients holster it needed to be redone if it was safe you don't want bad work to get out That said if it was a prototype for you then you could use it as a short term solution until you create a better pattern that is that questionable around the trigger.
  7. I think if you look at the redundant safeties the XD has I think it would be. To test this, empty the gun and mags, put in dummy rounds. Insert the firearm in the holster try to get it to fire if you do I was wrong if it doesn't then it is indeed safe from an ad. But may not be from someone grabbing it. Insure the holster has friction with the firearm so ir grips it and the firearm doesn't fall out in any position and the firearm doesn't move in the holster during normal body movements even if they are over extended.
  8. I second grey ghost graphics I've used them twice before and it was a fast turn around less than a week iirc.
  9. Weavers have a us plate for imprinting it on holsters and saddle bags. Iirc they also carry a CS one.
  10. Red cent it was people will pay more at auctions than they could buy it direct new. Good to see you here also
  11. The book you refered to for designing patterns wouldn't be the one you put out some time back on making CAS gear would it or is it a different book. I have the CAS book but if there is a newer book out I would like to find it.
  12. Jim, I know you are busier than a long tail cat in a room full of rocking chairs. But is there any way to get your design book digitally or at worst in paper form.
  13. The UN waxed spool that Tandy sales then I wax it my self. The thread is designed for machine use iirc.
  14. Take a look at either of these sources. The first is a book of period correct leather gear it's " Packin Iron". And the second is a very detailed three DVD set from John Bianaci "The Artistry and Secrets of Advance Western Holster Making". The both go great together. The book gives you ideas for patterns and the DVDs give you the techniques for creating those ideas. A disclaimer is the belt and holster john builds in the DVD is the typical single bus card rig. Although the belt could be modified quickly cutting off the drop loop and be an excellent ranger style gun belt with another mod by tapering the ends and forgoing the billets for the ranger style you have a plainesman belt. The holster will work with all three belt designs with little to no mods iirc. Then you just redisn your holsters for the various styles weather it be a strap like he shows or a Mexican loop holster or a slim Jim to even a speed holster by tucking here adding there etc. the techniques cover pattern design and making, selecting leather, fabricating a gun belt and holster. Finishing etc. his current gun belts with a single holster run in the $500 give or take range.
  15. I was in Alaska after the Valdez oil cleanup. The company was holding an auction in anchorage to dispose of the stuff it aquired for the job. It was suppose to be a little payback for the citizens of the fiftieth state. But, contractor from the lower forty eight were there driving the prices through the roof everything I was interested in went well over what I could go to a store and buy new. At that time things ran more in ak. I think anytime an auction gathers more than pro bidders look out the prices are going to be high.
  16. I used Grey Ghost for my custom makers stamps but they also do templates. I had an enjoyable transaction with them they even did the art work for me. It was a simple Circle W brand but theirs was much nicer than what I sent them as an example.
  17. I was thinking that 1/3 trees were common for competitions and decorations where a full size would be too big. As for a pattern get yourself a copy of ordnance order #29 it has all the info for a full size saddle just reduce it to 1/3 the size. You will have all the accutrament info also like bridles and saddle bags the more you add the more yo can charge. I thought about finding an old broken saddle repairing it for use on my electric scooter as I use it as a gun cart for CAS events. A&E a scabbard for the rifle on one side and one for the shotgun on the other saddle bags yo carry ammo and stuff. Replace the seat with the saddle find a carrosale horse head and mount to tiller. Etc, eventually for competitions have a complete setup with saddlebags filled as prescribed in regs withs bags for coffee and sugar etc.
  18. If you want I'll sell you my hardcover copy for $75 plus shipping or all three for $200 plus shipping I rather have the digital versions
  19. I'm wanting to make some saddle strings to tie stuff to my electric scooter I use as a gun cart at CAS events. What weight material, what is the best leather, how wide should they be, length is dependent on what they'll be used to tie down. Thanks in advance
  20. I did in deed pay for a disc of old military manuals the twenty bucks were well worth the time and having to look at a single location when I need info that is contained there. It was more than a few pages it was thousands of pages that were searchable, collated, and in a neat and orderly publication. I guess you wouldn't pay a photographer for a photo that you could take either
