  1. Ok I just found it.....very handy addition to strap cutter to keep straps against cutter and cutting straight. http://www.johan-potgieter.com/ll/?p=102
  2. Well the other brain cell died from loneliness so I need some help please. A while back I saw a modifiction to a wooden strap cutter where someone(?) used a cardboard shim to help cut straight. The shim went on the handle and angled the depth guage somehow. I have spent whours looking and can't find it. Can anyone remember where this hint is? Sure appreciate the help, cataracts fixed..now I can see, just don't remember what I saw!! LOL Thanks again everyone
  3. Springfield has tons of blelt blanks, enter belt blanks in their search box
  4. Had one done 8/13 the other 8/20. Can't even say what a difference!!! WOW!! Thought I was the only one using a flashlight at my desk!! Ha! So Grateful.
  5. Here is a link to John James online, it appears that sizes 1-3 are the same but #4 is somewhat smaller.. Was sorting thru some needles I had and trying to identify which I had and found this page. Hope it helps someone else. Thank you all again for your time and guidance. http://www.jjneedles.com/products/Envelope-Saddlers%27-Harness-Needles.html
  6. Thank you all for you prompt and informative answers, and thank you steveh for taking all the extra time to email John James and come up with an answer to my questions. I feel so fortunate to belong to a site that so freely shares their knowledge and helps new comers and experienced leatherworkers alike. Pablo27
  7. Thanks for the reply, and helping me understand what the differences are. One question though, how far back do you taper the thread to get a good solid thread ? Also what type of wax are you using, straight beeswax or some mix? I went to the John James website and didn't see an 004 size needle, can you clarify the size for me. Thanks again for your time and help, I really appreciate it.
  8. I apologize ahead of time for another thread question but I have been reading continously for 3 days and can't find the answers I am seeking and need some advice. I even called Campbell-Randall and they couldn't answer my question. I can't find out what the difference between #6, or #5 and 18/3 or 18/4 and what size is 207? Then there are all the needle sizes. one place a size is 00 and someplace else it is a different #??? I bought some Barbour #6 ($50 worth) and then ordered some John James #2 needles but don't think the two are compatible?? So if there is a chart or someone could point me to the right post, my sanity would be forever grateful. I love these forums and Nigel's video's but I'm over educated for my intelligence and need some advice. Thank you so so much in advance.
  9. There is a freeware program called "Gimp" that will do almost anything with images, really versatile. Just google it, it is amazing. Paul
  10. Just finished(?) my first batch of Vinegaroon, I am curious if I've done it right 1) It really isn't Black more a clear gray liquid, 2) after almost 3 weeks there was steel wool left in jug. 3) I strained it through coffee filters but it looks like I may need to do it again?? Thanks so much for you all of your help.
  11. Hi all, just looking at Matt S.'s post and I am a little confused ( not unlike many other times) anyhow in the first paragraph he says not to make a stitch groove and the next paragraph he says to make one. What am i missing here?
  12. Thanks for the excellent answers from you all. I will sure use them. Thanks again. Paul
  13. I have searched all the forums and have not found what I need to know. so here goes. I'm wanting to make a vest and set of chaps for my 1 year old great-grandson and I am using oil tanned leather. I don't know how to keep my stitches in line and straight. marks from a divider or over-stitch wheel don't show up?? I'm open for any and all suggestions. Thank you all for taking your time and sharing all of the wisdom with us less/no experienced readers. Thanks again Paul
  14. Need some input on the length of the handle for a round knife. In the book "Leathercraft Tools By Al Stohlman" he says that the handle of the round knife should fit in the heel of your hand, if not then you should shorten the handle. I have two new Osborne knifes and I don't want to cut on them if this is not the case. Anyone had to shorten the handle of a round knife, if so what is the best way to go about it? Thanks so much.
  15. I have read most of the posts about Round knifes and I'm still not sure of what I'm doing. Just how does one know when it is time to switch to a finer sharpening stone, or to quit the stone and go to the strop? This site is a wealth of info and knowledge and I really spend a lot of time reading and learning. Any light someone can shed on this question would be greatly appreciated.
  16. . Just thought I'd throw in 2 cents here. I just set up my drafting table to use for layout and cutting, the top is 4'x6' and about 2" thick I still have a desk that I plan on using for tooling but this big table should be a good cutting/layout table
  17. Thanks for all the great feedback. I have purchased a couple of round knifes on Ebay, in fact just bought a new CS Osborne and returned the Tandy Damscus unopened thanks to advice I found on here. I sure do appreciate all the help.
  18. Just trying to get some feedback on which knives you like to use on various leathers, 7oz veg, tooling sides, upholstery, oil tanned, etc and why, also any other tips on cutting would also be appreciated.
  19. Good info and a great video, have watched it several times, but I am missing something! Have made 2 of three strops, used harder leather on one and a softer 5/6oz on the other but when I apply the compound (Porter cable polishing compound), have tried two different grits, They just seem to gum up on top of the leather, am using grain side. Any suggestions would be most helpful at this point. Thank you for your guidance.
  20. Could someone please tell how to delete a post in a forum. If it isn't going to be answered then I need to remove it and make room for someone else's post. Thank you ahead of time for your time. I will continue to be a member and learn a lot, just won't ask any questions for awhile. Thank you again. 21. First let me say I am truly amazed by the help and professional knowledge on the site. I spent hours reading and learning. I'm wanting to make a pair of plainsmen mocs (knee high) and I not sure if I should use oil tanned or ....upholstery hide?? The oil tanned is probably more moisture resistant but the upholstery is a lot thicker, so I'm curious and need some advice please. Thank you in advance, and thank you for all the great advice on this site. Paul
