  1. I don't think one would be any better than the other. the bottom line is that it only has be harder than leather to work (which is why the delrin stamps work). So unless they abused, the metal ones should last a very long time.
  2. welcome. well I make stamps but so it doesn't sound like a commercial I'll stick to the 2nd part of the question. Ian was correct that Chrome tanned leather doesn't take a stamp well (generally not at all). The softened leather will bounce back up. Veg tan will easily take a stamp impression and hold it. Other leathers like latigo or a harness leather can take a stamp depending on the actual tannage. Most latigos will take a stamp under pressure - in otherwords with a press rather than a mallet stamp. These are basically a retan of some type so while they have a lot of the characteristics of vegTan it also has chrometan characteristics mostly for weatherizing the leather. A lot of the markings you see on soft leather has been hot stamp embossed. A heat press is used to heat and stretch the leather and at the same time a colored foil is bonded (heat activated glue) to the leather. If no foil is used the mark is still there because the heat has stretched the leather around the die. I had a brother who worked for a company that impressed things like large notebooks for companies. They had machines that used some sort of radio wave to heat and stretch the leather. Pretty impressive and fast. You can look for hot foil embossers on eBay. Kingsley is the model I have. Cheers!
  3. BUMP. Any new developments in this area? SubToner removed their link for using the monochrome sublimation on leather so I don't know if anyone else is having any luck.
  4. Ditto on Pro DIes. I have one of their dies and it is very well done.
  5. when I fit a belt for someone, we measure to the middle hole (of 5). I then cut 6" from the middle hole. So in theory, that's 4" from the first hole. So far, that has never been short of going thru anyone's belt loop. Although we do get customers that really want it long past the belt loop.
  6. The pattern that Camano Ridge kindly provided also makes a good storage sheath for your swivel knife. I keep my ruby blade knives in mine.
  7. Hello Itch. Yes, I made the plate. It is on 1/4" delrin plate. I use my press from Weaver on it, although it can be done on the arbor press in sections.
  8. Artisan used to have a reasonably priced 10 ton hydraulic press, but it seem to have doubled in price since I last looked at it. I use the press from Weaver. I think there is a thread about someone selling one on here somewhere.
  9. sent you one by email. enjoy!
  10. Ditto on SLC. They have lots of kidskin in various colors that might work.
  11. Hello. Looks like taxes this year are going to be a little more complicated than usual so I'm wondering if using a CPA is the way to go versus one of the big box tax houses like H&R Block or Jackson Hewitt? Then there is the concern of finding a decent CPA. The reason it's more complicated this year it is a combination of W-2 income, 1099 income, 1st year self employment income, and even some leftover unemployment income. That adds up to a lot of forms and I know H&R and JH basically charge by the form. What are your thoughts?
  12. thank you WS. Just occupying my time.
  13. wasn't aking for critiques. Just sharing. share your pictures.
  14. Hello. Just a new belt buckled embossed with a new plate I made. The buckle was stained with Fiebings HiLiter and finished with Clear-Lac. Cheers!
  15. Hi Red, Yeah I found a picture of the wallet from the movie and tried to copy the stitching around the letters. I sell a laser engraved wallet with that on the front. The direct laser version shows more of the stitching. Cheers!
  16. Nope. It is an embossing plate that fills the 2.5"x3.25" space of the oval buckle blank.
  17. Thanks Glockanator! That made my day.
  18. Inspired by the wallet in the movie Pulp Fiction. (obviously I censored it) This was embossed using an embossing plate I made. I'm just glad I remembered how to lace it correctly.
  19. The evil empire has a 3/8" letter set but I don't think they make the numbers anymore. http://www.tandyleatherfactory.com/en-usd/search/searchresults/4907-00.aspx
  20. Hello. Yes, they do suck. The short answer is yes, you can go over them with a real dye.
  21. Happy New Year! Now I'm not one to make resolutions, but here's to 2014 being as good as 2013 was to me.

  22. Merry Christmas Everyone!
