Never pull hard on the needle. Once the needle passes through the leather, just grab the thread. I hand stitch and have never tied the thread in any way. I leave about 6" of thread on the short side. It's pretty rare that I pull the needle off. When I do, it's because I pulled the needle and not the thread.

A FEW HOLSTERS
chiefjason replied to MikePatterson's topic in Gun Holsters, Rifle Slings and Knife Sheathes
Kind of hard to tell for sure, but I get the feeling they all need sight channels. You want to add some space above the frame/barrel so that the sight passes clearly through the holster. Either a full channel, 100% clear, or a partial sight channel, 75% clear. I've moved to partial sight channels. Without creating that space the front sight can catch in the holster on the draw. Try taping a small dowel rod that is just taller than the front site on top of the gun and molding around that. You're headed in the right direction. FWIW, there are very few holsters made for the Ruger 22's. If there were not so many darn variations I would probably try to make more of them. lol -
I always deal with Mark. Yeah, good guy. Getting close to having to call him again.

2-Tone Axe Sheath

I like it. I need to make one for my camp ax. -
Over the last couple years I've ordered from Springfield, ALD, and Thoroughbred Leather with success. Most comes from Thoroughbred these days.

Am I Just Too Much A Newbie Or Am I Dealing With A Nutjob?
chiefjason replied to CyLee's topic in Leatherwork Conversation
I keep hearing folks talk about bull hide and cow hide. I'm sure there IS a difference. I do believe I've gotten a few of each based on size difference and hide characteristics, but no way to really know. Age could probably do the same thing. I just find it difficult to believe that the slaughterhouse separates them, or the tannery charges enough to dig them out and sell them separately. It just does not work like that. No way to tell what it is. And no reason too. Your friend is too smart by half. -
Destroying Projects With Stitch Groover :(
chiefjason replied to thekid77's topic in How Do I Do That?
On really sharp or weird corners, I will grove it to where I think the other edge will be. Then pick it up and place it on the other edge. If they don't connect, I go back and connect them with a free hand groover. -
1911 Blue Guns
chiefjason replied to Modad2010's topic in Gun Holsters, Rifle Slings and Knife Sheathes
The Kimber problem is the Solo, it looks Officer 1911'ish but different dimensions. Sig also has a proprietary slide that will not work with a standard 1911 holster. The Sig slide is thicker on the top than a standard 1911 slide. The rest are pretty much the same. I have not had a problem with a standard 1911 and either the Ring's 5" or Commander length. One thing I did quit doing was boning in any textures on the slide like the fins/cuts for racking the slide. Those change a lot and mismatching them looks funny. -
If it's the flesh side and you want to rough it up hit it with a stiff bristle brush. I'll do that to mine occasionally. I have 2 that are pushing 20 years old. Used them on my regular knives before leather work. Now one stays on my table all the time.

Love that pattern Dwight. You could possibly make it even easier by extending the T on the front piece. Rivet it like normal but wrap it all the way to the top and snap it as normal. Kind of like the 2x2x2 belt pouches where the cover and belt loop are the same piece. No stitching at all, just rivets and snaps. Or even make the front one piece and the loop/snap cover another piece and rivet it all down in the same spot. Might be worth a try. Easy on.off would be a plus.

Sight Channel Question
chiefjason replied to cleanview's topic in Gun Holsters, Rifle Slings and Knife Sheathes
I run mine to around the ejector port, not much higher. Probably about the same as JLS, I just use a different reference point on the pistol. The change in fit is more dramatic on smaller pistols too, that's where I really noticed it and decided to change from a full sight channel. -
Recipe For Bag Finish. Neatsfoot And Beeswax.
chiefjason replied to rscow's topic in How Do I Do That?
I use a mix of 50/50 by weight melted together. I apply thin layers and heat with a heat gun so the leather wicks it up. Try it on scrap pieces first to see if you like it. I'm doing holsters with it. And use real bees wax, much easier to work with. You get a thin paste with the above ratio. This one has a coat of neatsfoot oil. Then 3 thin coats of the oil/wax. Slightly darker than the initial leather. -
You can buy bag punches to cut the slots out. That is what I use when I need a slot for a clip. Any reason you are not leaving them outside and making them adjustable with a couple of holes punched? For leather loops go ahead and spend the extra money on pull the dot snaps. Well worth it IMO. They do not come unsnapped easily, and only in one direction. Solve the bump from the front unsnapping problem. I set mine to only release by being pulled down from the top. As for boxy, the shorter the slide the more they tend towards boxy. You want sexy, use a 5" 1911. lol If you want to salvage that one with the tight stitch, run one stitch down and back in that tight space. It might look different, but it will function. Basically, run a normal stitch down, then backstitch and continue up the slide.

Managed to get a HK VP9 and then quickly butchered it to my needs. lol Ground out a slight ejection port, more of the trigger guard, and cut about half the sight channel off but managed to keep it in one piece for later. But since Ring's is not listing them.... What I immediately noticed is that it seems to be nearly the weight of a real gun. I was not expecting that. Quality is nice and not hard to re work if you wanted too.

Slammed it on the table. On the floor. Threw it across the room. Out of the garage. Into the yard. Tossed in trash can. In boxes. Cut in pieces. I could go on. If I can save something I will. But sometimes all you will get out of a piece is a lesson in what not to do again. But that's valuable in it's own right.

I just did a mag holder that way. I'll likely not do another double mag holder. During molding the leather usually wants to turn up a bit on one end. I even widened the mouth for the mags a bit to prevent it, but still got a bit. That made the back clip hard to attach. I also did not like the fact that I felt like it would need to be broken in more to work. I'm fine with a break in period. But this one just felt like it would work fine, but not before it was broken in a bit. I want to know it's going to work when it goes out. Single clip mag holders work very well for me. It was getting both clips to align properly after molding that seemed to be the problem in the double clip mag holder. So, if you do it keep an eye out for that.

Questions Posed On Another Forum
chiefjason replied to Red Cent's topic in Gun Holsters, Rifle Slings and Knife Sheathes
The difference between what folks think and what is can be amusing. Detail boning can actually increase retention, but not always in a good way. And not always long term or consistent. And it's not necessary for "proper" retention, but we know that. I think CC folks like that "snap" when the gun locks in at the trigger guard and ejection port. But sometimes that snap can make for a difficult draw. And when those areas stretch, that snap goes away too. Probably also why the SASS guys don't want it. Too much of a chance to snag something with no real benefit to them. Plus it's easier to do on Semi's than revolvers. Like Eaglestroker said, don't try and be everything to everybody. Do what you know and what you like. I've sent guys to other makers because I did not have the skill set or time to deal with what they wanted. -

A Different Kind Of Gun Leather
chiefjason replied to Hilly's topic in Gun Holsters, Rifle Slings and Knife Sheathes
So, if you cover that much of the B on an EBR does it make it more anti friendly? Maybe CT, MA, or CA compliant? lol Nice work. I like the juxtaposition of the leather on the Modern Sporting Rifle. -
Iphone Case - What To Do About The Bottom Corners?
chiefjason replied to FlHobbyist's topic in How Do I Do That?
If you keep the fold over design I wonder if welting the sides a bit would keep the bottom fold from being as sharp. Which might help. In the mean time, try burnishing those bottom sides with wax. It will help fill in the gaps and smooth the edge. I use a 50/50 paraffin and beeswax mix for that. -
I think the niche on multi molds is full kydex holsters. They do seem perfect for them. For leather and hybrids I prefer the Rings. I partially fill in the ports myself, but don't want them gone completely. I like to bone in some detail there and need some impression. And I prefer a partial sight channel on my leather and hybrids. Since I do flat backs it helps keep the gun from moving front to back. With the thinner guns a full sight channel can lead to them getting loose. Particularly with hybrids. They want to move up info the sight channel area. So I mold all the way to the frame on the top 1/4 or so of the front. Locks them in tight.

Arbor Press One Ton
chiefjason replied to Red Cent's topic in Gun Holsters, Rifle Slings and Knife Sheathes
My initial tests with snaps were not good. The post would collapse inside the button you use for the outside, then lean over. Never got a good bite on the snap, they would just pull off. I went back to setting them by hand. I don't do enough to fight with it.
