  1. I'd be interested too and if you do release the steampunk pack I would love to see it
  2. 8-9oz? Anything that heavy I'll saddle stitch I mainly want this for the lighter garment/upholstery chrometan which are such a pain to sew by hand, for me at least!
  3. Oh I know it's not an actual leather machine, but it was free which, since I'm off work with a bad back, is the only price I can afford I just want to get the best I can out of it
  4. Hi, just been given this 'old faithful' Bernina Record 830 by a friend who's moving overseas. It's an old school machine and as far as I know works perfectly, it was serviced before he got it. So, what's the best way to use this machine for sewing leather? I'm guessing only garment/upholstery chrometan (which he also gave me a few bagfulls of) and don't even consider veg unless very thin? I'm not all that familiar with sewing machines at all, though I have used domestic machines in the past. There's a pack of leather needles and a skein of heavyweight thread suitable for leather (according to his sewing teacher) but I'm not at all sure on the best setup to use.
  5. I've had the same issue and to be honest I find a lighter hammer and less force per hit works better. Work hardening does occur but it isn't going to prevent you from peening the end over. Light hits in a circular pattern do the job. Hard hits do just tend to bend the shaft, especially on the light rivets
  6. Ok, those suggestively shaped things are feather plumes, so a few decorative cuts to emphasize the feathers? The current design is a little high on the leather, are you planning on adding the scroll underneath? If not, border or no it'll look off centre. If it were me, at this stage, I would not try to cut a border around the design but try to even it out both sides, get it symmetrical. As for the rest, there's critique and there's being nasty. Some here seem to be crossing the line from my viewpoint. You've done very well indeed for your current skill level. Others would've done differently. Just remember the more you do, the better you'll get, and keep at it
  7. It'd be nice to see a pic of the crest itself to compare. The design looks fine, main issue I can see really is there seems to be some areas over stamped with the backgrounder. How did you work out where to go to? I can se you didn't want to cut a border, but that being the case you need to figure some way of defining the edges you want to stamp to. Perhaps something as simple as a card cutout you can lay over the leather and tack down?
  8. Very unique inner, I love it! Great tooling too
  9. Nice clean lines, hope your wife loves it Love the "TARDIS" blue checkbook too
  10. To be honest, my skiving technique is pretty rubbish too A new blade really does help. What do you use to skive? I have Tandys super skiver - not so super really, it's a pain to use and the result is never even! I'm trying to figure out if there's any way I can make an edge skiver that won't cost a fortune, but coming up blank right now
  11. Did you skive the leather down at all? I think with that thickness it could easily lose a few oz at the seams
  12. Unfortunately I have to use what I have due to budget and availability, so I really need to figure this dye out. I have 2, the standard and the all in one. Both are giving the same problem though, wherever I start ends up darker, and it seems impossible to get a good finish for me. Would casing the leather, or dampening at least, first help or hinder?
  13. Thank you everyone! I'm dithering on the colour mainly cause I'm not too good at dyeing leather. I'm using Eco-flo from Tandy but it keeps ending up blotchy.
  14. This is my first hat, all in leather from the Tandy 2662 pattern 'Aristocrat' hat The pattern is a bit of a pig and not exactly symmetrical but it worked out in the end. I haven't dyed it yet, still deciding what colour to do it, brown or black.
  15. What, so you could sell them cheaper? A 4" stamp? I do wonder how much the setup of EDC's business cost. I'm betting he didn't just wander down to Hobby Lobby and pick up the machine on clearance... Also, we ain't all thick. Some of us actually know how to do more than hit things with hammers. I'm sure that many of us actually DO know the difference between vector and raster and why a raster file can lead to more work.
  16. I must admit, sniping at each other doesn't engender much in the way of desire to use either service. I do like the idea though and will keep it in mind once I get big enough to need something like this. My preference would be something I can do with a standard makers mark as a small keyfob, supplied with items sold, rather than a full business card but I'll leave the decision until I've got a name worth the outlay .
  17. Thanks everyone I'm just so glad I finally got the leather so I could make this, been wanting to since September! I've now got a couple of friends requesting covers for their tablets, which are the same size as the kobo. So I'll have an opportunity to work on the production design
  18. Got fed up of not having a case for my Kobo Touch so I made this. I made it so the main strap also holds the unit upright with the extra snap so I can put it on the desk in front of me and just read Couldn't find any patterns so I made my own It ain't perfect, if I make another I would add another 5mm onto the sides and move the screen hole up my 5, add 5mm to the inner piece top to make up for it, and would make a cutout at the bottom so I don't have to remove it for charging. As the prototype though it's fine as it is, and certainly good enough protection for me. I also used the rune stamps for the first time with a press... Yeah... Use a hammer next time, almost went straight through the bottom, they were almost knifelike!
