  1. Hi, was looking at KKs tute in 'How do I do that?' and decided I should give wallets a go. Didn't have the right leathers so it's all 1.4-1.6mm veg (last of a lot from New Zealand - the tannery is closed now). The first one, I had trouble sewing so I laced around the outside - pics at the end of the KK thread - but this one I wanted to sew. My machine's an odd little hand-cranked patcher, the Able 290, and feeding one-handed while cranking is taking some getting used to, but aside from that all's good I used Copperstone dye for the black and the sealer and Tandy silver in the skull and cross, overdyed and wiped off with the black.
  2. Hi A friend of mine recently asked if I could make a Polar Bear mask for them, just the snout though. I've done a few masks but nothing like this. Before I tell them I can't I'd like to at least try. Does anyone have any ideas for making a form I could mold the mask over? Thanks
  3. Just used this guide to do my first one
  4. I ended up getting one of these - http://tuffcase.com/...&products_id=37 Tuffcase did a good job, getting nice clean impressions every time and while not Aussie the shipping was reasonable. I'd certainly recommend them.
  5. Resurrecting this as Tandy does indeed have a link and I couldn't find anything else on site... https://www.tandyleatherfactory.com.au/media/downloads/Tri-Weave-How-To.pdf

  7. Oh excellent, thanks Ray and Wishful. I use the Cobblestone dyes ( http://www.leatherfinishingproducts.com.au/index.php/cobblestone/ ), do you know if they would mix ok with the Pro stain? They do mix with water or spirit so I'm hopeful. I'm wondering now what I can add to the gold to give me a bronze
  8. Hi, I was wondering if there's any good way of getting a metallic finish to leather. I do a lot of steampunk stuff and I'd love to be able to dye a piece bronze rather than have to paint it with acrylics.

    Makers Mark :)

Just got my makers mark from Tuffcase in the USA. Great service and reasonable freight considering I'm in Australia Still getting used to how much force to use but the impression's really crisp and clean. It's a 1"x1" stamp
  10. That looks great! When I did my cover I went for a notepad style - 'hinged' at the top - so I could set it on the table and read, but I quite like the thought of doing a 'book' style cover.
  11. Not really done any feathers so can't help there, but I will say this - you've got some mighty clean bevelling there! Smooth as, mate
  12. I'd like to see it opened I have a Kobo Touch, they are great aren't they?
  13. This image is from the companies website (yeah... thought you noticed that...) and it's the machine I'm looking at getting. I was wondering what you more experienced types could tell me about it? Does anyone have one of these? Is it worth the money? Should I be looking for something else? I'm looking at sewing mostly 2mm veg, 3 to 4 layers tops so a normal top of 8mm. The cheaper option would be the boot patcher but I've not heard that many good things about them. This would be my first proper leather machine, the old one is just a tough old cloth job than manages some leather work. Thanks all
  14. Excellent, thank you! I did try a search but I think I got every possible combination bar the one I was after lol.
  15. It may not be a new technique but I don't know it :D do you have a link to a how-to by any chance? It looks great!
  16. You can harden leather this way but you'd need to make it a little oversize and dunk it in the hot water on a form as the leather will shrink. Too long and you'll have the small unusable scraps mentioned earlier. Timing will be different with each hide, even with different parts of the hide, so you'd have to do each by eye. It's a PITA and I'd stick with wet-forming.
  17. LOL You get that too? Thought it was just me... Very nice looking belt there
  18. I've made the Tandy Aristocrat/top hat and the pattern is in no way symmetrical. I basically redrew the brim entirely as neither the inside nor outside lines were close to matching. There was about 1/2" difference left to right in the original pattern
  19. It does depend on the phone. I was looking at mine and thinking "Hmm, only 2 or 3 mm at each end, not sure I'd trust that," but my wifes phone would have to be removed from the case every time it needed charging etc anyway as the ports are all protected with flaps. I'd take a good look at the phone and think where you need access points - it's not just the screen. Charging, headphone jack, buttons, they all make a difference.
  20. That's excellent! How do you get such a good dyw job with Eco-flo on large pieces? Mine always look terrible in comparison.
  21. Interesting style, I'd love to see how it looks in place Nice work
