I flush cut carefully with a sharp knife. I don't push the thread back into the hole, that seems to me to be wasting that stitch, you're almost asking for it to come free.
-
Are you pulling the thread too tight when you cut it? I backstitch 3 stitches, pull tight then let it relax before cutting the threads so they don't just disappear out t'other side again.

A small anvil, or even a bit of bar stock, will do it but you'll have to do it with a hand setter. I sometimes use an old plane iron to rivet areas like that, or for setting a snap I've unaccountably forgotten... Just make sure the leather is resting on a solid nsurface and there's nothing underneath that will mar the outer finish when you hit the top.

I posted the part-finished mask already in Tom Banwells thread and said I'd start a new one when I got it finished and here we are. Lessons learnt - the pattern pieces don't line up exactly, especially on the brow. 2.5mm veg is just a tad thick to bend around the stitching, again especially on the brow Cut the nostrils BEFORE you stitch the nose together, dummy! This was a definite challenge, I really enjoyed making it, even with the cursing

I'm really surprised this has been here so long and there's no other versions on the board! Well, here's mine, I'm going to a 'puppy' party at the weekend, everyone has to wear ears and tail lol (some are going in full fursuits!) so I decided I'd go the extra mile and have a go at this mask. I've already noticed areas I need to reshape - the nose especially - and it was hell sewing the brow in, it seems way too big for the space so I ended up with a much smaller eye socket, but overall I'm really pleased. I'll post the completed design in its own thread when I'm done but I just wanted to say thanks to Tom for sharing the pattern. I'm already looking at it and trying to figure out how I can extend the muzzle for a more labrador look they are my fave dogs.

Belt blanks certainly work but if you're going to be doing more than 2 or 3 bags then they will rapidly become more expensive than getting a decent shoulder in the first place.

I use Cobblestone spirit dyes and find that as long as I've not left it too long normal alcohol hand sanitiser is cheap and effective. Squirt on a decent amount, rub in, wipe off. If I've just ignored it and carried on, as I sometimes do when on a roll , then it'll fade the dye considerably but leave a stain.

Hand stitched with artificial sinew, this is the first of the new Plague Doctor masks. A huge upgrade to our original half-mask, this covers the entire face and has stitched and riveted lenses covering the eye sockets. Plague Doctor masks were worn in Medieval Europe by doctors who would place a pomander of fresh scented herbs and spices in the beak. The beliefs of the time were that disease spread through 'foul humours' - airborne contaminants - and that covering the face and breathing in the fresh herbs would prevent them from catching the plague. Unfortunately, though inevitably, many such doctors succumbed to the plagues they were attempting to treat.

Shanwen Kia (Chinese Scale) Armor Question
RavenAus replied to Buddahcjcc's topic in How Do I Do That?
I would suggest that some of the scales need their peaks and troughs reversed so that they actually fit together better? So some like this ^ and some like this v. -
Drinking Horns And Food Safe Finishes
RavenAus replied to Ulfberht Leather Works's topic in Historical Reenactment
The Guinness does work. What I would recommend is get some denture sterilising tablets and drop one on the horn, fill to the brim and leave overnight. Do that till the smell goes away, just let it dry between times. Shouldn't take much. Then do the Guinness for a day, pour it out - don't drink - and the inside is basically done. I've had a litre-sized horn I did like this 8 years back and never had any problems with it. *or, seeing your latest post, baking soda works too -
*snerk* Ok, from the title the only thing going through my mind was a modified version of the scene from Full Metal Jacket... "This is my Head Knife. There are many like it, but this is mine..." "You will eat with it, sleep with it..."

G'day Ruby! What part of Oz are ya from? I'm in Brissie. You have some great looking stuff there I love the nail tools! My wife has ADHD and I've got Aspergers - it's a tough path but you look like you're doing great. Full speed ahead and hang the naysayers!

When I spoke to the laser company they said it comes down to power. With a higher wattage laser you can cut faster which means less scorching. The other option is doing multiple low-power passes. Lasers for metal are rather different to the lasers for softer materials though, no inert gas needed. You do however need a very good extraction system to get the smoke out as it will interfere with the cut and can stain.
-
For copper you really do need a metal anvil on the backside. Even something small on top of the poundo will help, if you can't get an actual anvil. I use an old plane iron on my press for anything that requires a hard surface. Copper though I do on my anvil, since I've got it
-
I was looking into a laser for my work but I was told it's not something you want anywhere near a house due to the 'burning flesh' smell. Even with top-quality extraction the supplier said it's something you want well away from other buildings.

The 2.5mm chisel is 5SPI, according to my local shop. Checked em against the 5 overstitch wheel and it's as close as you'll get when they are on different measuring systems
