I have been using American Saddlery locally lately for my leather purchases since I found out they sell to the public. much higher quality leather and usually less than TLF prices Ya I liked it a whole lot better when Tandy Leather factory was just the leather Factory. the leather factory started out at the old Scholtz tannery in Chattanooga, TN The leather factory bought the Tandy brand because Tandy was more popular and well known than the Leather Factory so the lrather factory bought the tandy brand for one million dollars when Tandy filed for bankruptcy. I still have a good time up at the local TLF on Saturdays just hanging out with my other leather head friends.

Well my local tandy also fired their manager and replaced jim with an even more awesome manager, Dana Is very helpful and will replace faulty tools or anything that you are not satisfied with. Dana holds several classes through the week which costs a small material fee to cover a portion of the leather and other hardware that may be used and we have an open workshop every Saturday which usually turns into a BS session about an hour after everyone shows up we learn a lot just bouncing each others tips and tricks off each other. I hope TLF keeps Dana.

LOL I just googledDap contact cement and guess what? that'd be Dap Weldwood Contact Cement

I use Dap contact cement. put it on both pieces let it almost dry then slap the two parts together, lightly pound the joint with a mallet and it will not come apart.

This Brazos Jack rig Designed by our beloved Jim Simmons is completely constructed from 6-7OZ harness leather lined with 1-2 OZ veg tan Specifically made for the 1858 Remington Army 44Cal or a reproduction. By experimenting I have come to find harness leather is an awesome leather for gun holsters especially for rainy days because it repels water very well. -

Wet Forming Holster
St8LineGunsmith replied to SpursNM's topic in Gun Holsters, Rifle Slings and Knife Sheathes
I use holster molds/blue guns and leave the mold in the holster until it is dry if i have to use a real gun then I lube it up with thick oil and wrap it in a piece of saran wrap then let the leather completely dry the holster don't seem to hold the gun as snugly when pulling the gun out before the leather is completely dry. I will also periodically press the leather against the mold while the leather is still damp to ensure that the holster forms to the shape of the mold or gun as snugly as possible I think it makes for a better looking pancake or paddle holster and friction sheathes that way,but that is just me... YMMV -
Belt I Tooled

Hey Chief I just wanted to say i posted your instructional videos to my forum http://chattownleatherheads.proboards.com/thread/14/mexican-round-braid-video-tutorial

well that is actually good to know because even the small Al Stohlman maul can weigh on your arm after swinging it a while a lighter maul can come in very useful when using seeders and other stamps that can penetrate through lighter weight leathers. and I just dont like using mallets or heavy mauls for stamping. if i need more force I can always swing harder

the whole rig is 9 ounce unlined and the finish is Eco Flo antiquing gel rubbed on with a large dauber i used the same product on the flesh side and rubbed it in well to smooth it down The Eco Flo antiquing gel is an amazing product for this type of finish and is versatile enough to use for background inlay And the holster, Flask holder and bullet pouch is double loop laced. the belt buckle strap billets are saddle stitched to the belt.
