FarNorth, I would charge $240 for a re-fleece with real sheep skin. If I used synthetic sheep skin it would be $170. To clean, oil, and put a finish of bag kote on, it would be another $60. Plus it needs the rear lacing replaced and do the strings. Which would probably add another $25. But as I said, if you use a good pad (not a blanket) you wouldn't need to re-fleece it. If it is a project you would like to try doing yourself, I say go for it! It is really fun and a great way to see the construction of a saddle. There always seems to be a mystery about working on and fixing saddles that people don't want to try it themselves. Tom

With todays saddle pads you could probably get away without replacing it. BUT, being leather work is what we do, I would re-fleece it And since I have no sewing machine, it would be stitched by hand. Perfect for a relaxing sunday afternoon! Tom

Bob, Nope.... no stand! Just it sitting on a pallet. I didn't even see where/what it was powered by. Just the hand wheel on the right. (sorry the pic is sideways). It looked as though it had not been used in years. Electrathon, Sorry.... I didn't hang around to see what it sold for. I knew I wasn't interested in it any longer. Plus I had a muzzle loader pistol holster I need to get home and finish up by HAND sewing The singer 29-4 was in bad shape. And I know it won't do what I'm looking for. Thanks for everyones input on this! Tom

Her is a pic. I'm at the auction now. They also have a singer 29-4. Picture I don't think I will get it.

Thanks, Bob! Are parts expensive because you can't get them? Or, just because it is a Landis? And, since it is in an amish shop I'm not sure how it is powered. could it be air? Treadle? They also list a "singer leather stitcher" as well. But give no other information about it. Thanks, Tom

There is a local Amish repair shop having an auction tomorrow that is going to sell a Landis #3 Leather Stitcher. I was wondering if that is something I should consider buying (I hand sew everything right now). And also, what would be the top price I should bid on it? I haven't seen it yet but they have been using it in their shop. Thanks, Tom

Thanks again for the replies. I have Lap Skiver/Splitter. Although it does not split the greatest. I'm still pondering what I should get. I just can't decide! Not a very good trait...... Tom

Thanks for all the replies! Yes, I do have most of the basic tools. So I'm looking for something I wouldn't normally buy. The belt sander or the drill press sounds like a lot of people use thiers often. Anyone like a particular brand/make/model of these tools? Thanks, Again! Tom

Troy, Thanks for the reply. I do have the Stolman saddle books and find them VERY useful. But, I think I can also get Dusty Johnsons book on amazon as well. Do you know anything about that book? What are your thoughts on a dremel? It seems that a lot of folks find good uses for one. Again, Troy, thanks for you suggestion. Tom

I just got a makers mark from Gray Ghost Graphics. Ordered it last Monday and got it on Thurs! Super fast and the stamp was very reasonably priced. They have a web site.

Modified Cow Camp Saddlery Pattern Headstall
keplerts replied to firetoad's topic in Saddle and Tack Accessory Items
Very nice! Did you get the pulling collar pattern from Cow Camp as well? I would like to make a pulling collar but have yet to find a pattern. I hate to buy a already made collar just for a pattern. Tom -
Ditto on your book website!

Ok, Over the past year my son has given me $225 in Amazon gift cards. I have been saving them to buy various tools for the leather shop. So, I am asking this group what tools would you buy if you had this to spend? Would it be a Belt Sander, Dremel, shop press, books or something else? I do saddle and tack repair, knife sheaths, belts, etc. Want to start building my first saddle soon also. I just can't decide on what to buy. I am not in a terrible rush to buy anything but I must say the money is starting to smolder in my pocket. Thanks for you suggestions, Tom

Jim, HOLLER! I would be interested in th pattern and welt layout. Thanks, Tom

Traditional Basketweave Stamp...
keplerts replied to Fullmetalsam's topic in Leatherwork Conversation
Did the basket stamp that you are using come in a Tandy "kit"? If so, that stamp is definetly the cheapest made stamp Tandy has. If you just order a single basket stamp from them the quility of it is a step up from the one that came in a kit. I have both and like using the one I bought by it self. Seems to do a good job. Now, I have never used anything other than Tandy stamps and can't compare them to anyone elses. I'm sure I would really like using the BK stamps but I just can't not afford them right now. Just my .02 worth...... Tom -
Beiler's number is: 717-768-0174 Hope that helps. Tom
-
OK..... thanks for all the info. I'm glad I didn't buy it on ebay! Tom
-
Beiler Manufacturing in PA has a good assortment of needle sizes. I don't have the phone number off hand but I will get it. Unless some here posts it first. They are Amish so there is no web site. Tom
-
Yep.....thats the one. I didn't buy it. How do you like yours? Was the blade sharp? Is Bob where you can buy these new? I can't find them on Toledo's web site. Tom
-
Thanks Tim! I didn't realize that Cowboy sewing machines were the makers of the Cowboy skiver. Was your blade sharp out of the box or did you have to sharpen it to work? Thanks, Tom

Thanks Bruce. Who makes the Cowboy model? Are these China made? So, to make it usable for wider strap slitting I would have to figure out a way to lock the handle in the forward position? I thought $236 was a pretty good price considering what Tandy wants for their model. And a CSO is more than double the cowboy cost. Thanks, Tom

Looking For A Pulling Collar Pattern
keplerts replied to ranchmom77's topic in Patterns and Templates
I think COWCAMPSADDLERY.COM (Ithink this is the web site) has these patterns for sale. I got a chinks making CD and a Head stall pattern from there. They were both very good. Tom- 3 replies

Anybody know anything about a leather skiver/splitter made by cowboy? I saw one on ebay for $236. Any info good or bad? Thanks, Tom
