3 to 4 oz is pretty thin. I bought a hide of it recently thinking it would be thicker than it was. But I think 8 ounce would be too stiff for a roll. If you got it to roll it would never lay flat again. 4 to 6 would be my suggestion. You also need to consider if you will do any tooling on it. The 3/4 is really too thin for good impressions. I made one recently, that I actually have not yet finished. I used some thin goatskin I had on hand with a sueded pigskin liner. That worked pretty well but it really is not as stiff as I would have liked.

Singer 211 G 466 Thoughts on this one?
cjartist replied to cjartist's topic in Leather Sewing Machines
Thanks Dikman, I just find it extremely overwhelming that there are Sooooooooo many machines. I guess that is where calling Toledo or another company that advertises here makes the most sense for getting into my first machine. -
Singer 211 G 466 Thoughts on this one?
cjartist replied to cjartist's topic in Leather Sewing Machines
Excellent responses. My desire for a machine probably outweighs my need at this point. If I had one I would use it for making chef knife rolls. I made one, stitching everything by hand. That takes way too long to stitch all those pockets and still be able to sell them at a reasonable price. For those I would be stitching some sort of 4 oz to a liner. I suspect that a medium duty machine would handle that ... IDK. The other things I would consider using it for would be knife sheaths and rifle slings. -
Singer 211 G 466 Thoughts on this one?
cjartist replied to cjartist's topic in Leather Sewing Machines
Thank you both for the responses. I had no idea how much money a servo would set me back so thank you for that. The reason I considered this machine was that it was close by. I would never pay the asking price but thought that perhaps he would take less. Yes, it would be a first machine for me. I wish Toledo would list some of their used machine prices online just so I could get an idea of what is available and what budget I would need. There is no way I can justify a $1500 machine purchase. So I will keep looking. Thanks again for your feedback! -
I was browsing Craigslist and came across a Singer 211G 466. I also found it listed on eBay. Singer 211G 466 I can certainly see some problems with this machine the way it sits and the seller has not been able to test it. It is currently wired for 220V and does not have a belt, feet, or spool holder (at the very least). I don't know enough about sewing machines to know what else might be missing. From what I have found online about this machine I believe it is a walking foot machine and should be able to handle a good amount of leather. I would need to convert this to 110V to be of any use to me and as I said, no one knows if it works. So, what do you think it is worth as it sits? Can you see any other problems with it? Thanks for any help on this, Cheryl

Find a cheap second hand jacket that fits you well and then dissect it to use as a pattern. I think you could do a solid back piece in tooled veg tan and I like LetherWytch's idea for a yoke on the upper front. Those areas don't require as much flexibility. I'd love to see some pics if you do decide to create this.

Please send me a catalog link also. Thank you.

Vernier Calipers case
cjartist replied to Tacblades's topic in Purses, Wallets, Belts and Miscellaneous Pocket Items
Looks real nice. Great first project! -
There are a lot of single pen cases for sale on Etsy, but maybe not exactly what you are looking for. When I did a Google search I came up with the following design post from 7 years ago Pen Pouch Design I won't be offering my services because you really would want someone that has a proper sewing machine to do large volumes. Good luck.

Thanks for sharing your progress. I use those binder clips all the time to hold my work in place. I usually just shove a couple of small scraps under both sides of the clip so that it doesn't make an unwanted impression.

Raise your hand if you've done this...
cjartist replied to bikermutt07's topic in Leatherwork Conversation
I'll raise my hand. It has happened to me more than once. The one I remember was a tablet case I made for my father for Christmas. It has loosened up some over time but was a really tight fit off the bench. -
Beautiful work Chief. Thanks for sharing!

Wonderful. The edges and stitching are so clean too!!

Okay thanks! The neatsfoot oil really darkened the leather for me. I guess I may have just used too much.
-
Can I ask what you used as a finish? I'd like to be able to keep the natural look but any oil seems to darken the leather. Thanks!
-
Very Nice. Looks a bit like a face with the gaps between the wings and the crown being the eyes.
-
Well, I guess I deserved that. LOL
-
Thanks you two! I cut the leather a bit small and therefore struggled to lace it. Lots of bending the needle and plier use. I got it done but it's wider in some parts than others.
-
I think 4 oz would be a bit thin to hold the shape that you typically see with molded masks. I would probably use a 6-7oz leather. that way it will carve well and hold a firm shape when molded. Good luck and share some pics when you're done. Cheryl

This is my second seat. It went a little better but I still had some problems. The most difficult part was the lacing.

Looks good. Where's the "horse butt" come from?

Bitwell makes a good one. I wanted to start with something universal that had the hardware mounted to it already. I bought one recently from Ebay and it worked out real well for me.
