  1. If that is acrylic paint, you should be able to add more to fix that. Unlike dye which is absorbed, paint just sits on top. Keep up the great work.
  2. That looks nice. If you find one, or if anyone starts making them, please keep me updated.
  3. That is very nicely done. Very three dimensional.
  4. I think the problem is that they don't make the cows that big
  5. Personally, I think you should start with a sturdier design. This one looks like it is built to break. I just saw a post of a really nice one on here yesterday. If I can find it I'll come back with the link. ETA: here it is Tool Caddy
  6. Do the tins have UPC codes? Might be fun to clean them out and keep them to store your small hardware pieces like rivets, grommets and snaps.
  7. Be careful adding red to green. They are complimentary colors and combined will make black. If you want a spattered look and the spray bottle doesn't do it, dip an old toothbrush in the dye and then pull your thumb over the bristles to create a splatter. This would provide a more dispersed splatter than a spray bottle which I suspect may saturate it too much. Love the gravel suggestion for texture.
  8. What is the outer layer? Is it leather or some other material? I can't even imagine tooling that much detail so small.
  9. Ditto on this. I got several gallons of Fiebings dye for free from Craigslist. A realtor was tasked with cleaning out a property and posted it. I probably won't have to buy any dye for years.
  10. Looks fantastic. I really love the skull and roses. Seems like the leather is just really dried out skin, so maybe a lot of oil to moisturize it? I guess you want to keep your secrets to yourself. That's cool. I totally understand that. So if it is not ink it must be dye. Probably Angelus to get so many colors.
  11. Maybe use a compass? If you go real slow you should be able to keep in lined up to the edge of the cut paper pattern.
  12. Congrats. I bet you are both excited and nervous. Best of Luck for great prosperity!
  13. Awesome looking work. Hard to believe you're new to this
  14. Look at how the back of a denim jacket is constructed. If you tooled a center panel with veg tan, that piece would not need to be as flexible. Then make a shoulder and two side pieces out of some garment leather or deer hide.
  15. Even those stitches are far from perfect. Nice looking bag though.
  16. The only thing that bothers me is your edge groove cutting through the leaves. Is that groove going to hold stitches? If so you should keep the design within the lines. Otherwise tool your design and then groove around the leaves. I think they look good.
  17. Welcome to the forum. Looks like you are off to a GREAT start. I think a second coat of dye would have helped to smooth out the blotching a bit. Keep in mind that you can always thin your dye, but usually more than one coat is required.
  18. I have not been very creative with the tools. I did need to replicate a stitch pattern into the design of my most recent project though and found that a small flathead screwdriver gave me just the look I wanted. When I started it began by admiring the work of an artist creating leather masks. I then bought a storage unit at auction that had a bunch of old Tandy tools in it. The amount of tools I have personally bought has been minimal. It is the leather and hardware that is expensive. If you are considering making items that are not tooled, keep your eyes open for a leather sofa sitting on the curb on garbage day. As long as it is real leather, a box cutter and a few minutes of your time can give you something to make bags or wallets out of.
  19. Thank you Sir. I think he'll like it. If I ever do it again, I'll be sure to unscrew the seat before pounding on it.
  20. That always feels great when they take a moment to show you how much they appreciate your hard work.
  21. Looks nice. I'm sure they will be thrilled! I made some using one eye bolt and one straight bolt. I don't think it folds together quite as nice as the tri-bolt but it is a lot cheaper.
  22. So about a week ago I decided that I would make my brother a bar stool for Christmas. He builds and plays cigar box guitars and goes by the aka Judge Gazza. The design was actually made for him by a friend to resemble the Converse All Stars logo. It was kind of slow going because punching all of those holes and doing that round braid is killer on my wrists. Everything was going fine and I was set to finish it up today to gift to him tomorrow. Then I began to hammer tack the top on this cheap p.o.s. chinese made stool and the screws holding the legs on started to pop out. I got it mostly attached and only added one of the side decorative nails. Then I just wrapped it up and he's going to have to finish it He has the tools and the ability to fix or replace the stool. It just sucks that I have to give it to him in this state. Merry Christmas everyone!
  23. I really like the moose. That's very cute. Can I ask where you got the brass rings? I need some for a project I've been thinking of. Thanks.
