  1. I like the padding I get from Weaver leather. It's 1/4" thick and it dense. It's a little more dense than memory foam. only no memory. It doesn't spring back fast.
  2. Never heard of Dubbin. I had been using Lexol on old saddles but switched to "Leather Thearpy". I can see Veg oil going bad in a climate control room. Out doors the leathers dries out and you have to keep re-applying the veg oil to keep it in. I do not use veg oil on old saddles because it darkens the leather to much.
  3. I have been using veg oil since 92 and never seen any to go rancid. I have worked on my own saddles that I have made that are over 10 years old and they are fine.
  4. Make sure you use buff rough out leather. The stamping will stand out a whole lot nicer than nappy leather. Make sure that you case the leather well. If it is to wet the image of the stamp work will show on the other side. Here is an example of a pair of rough out fenders that was stamped.
  5. I have been making saddle since 92 and never heard the term "Elephant ears" I would have called it a bull moose or a little wonder tree.
  6. I havn't seen many saddles that are dyed. Mainly lettering and background if it has fancy tooling. I leave all my saddles natural. Just put on Veg oil to give it that golden color. The more you rub in, the darker it gets. Veg. oil soaks into the leather and does not build up on top.
  7. You should be able to find a custom saddle maker that can make the saddle that you want. One who can work with the treemaker in designing the saddletree.
  8. That skirt is what I call a "Mother Hubbard" style. For the skirt at least. In the old days a Mother Hubbard would cover the wholel saddle from the front to the back with one piece of leather. The modern day mother hubbard is only one piece of leather on the skirts. (at least that is the way I make them)
  9. Any more details. I found Joe Mitchells in Garland, Ft. Worth, Dallas. All from 65-73 years of age.

    Leather Drop Bag

This is a Leather Drop Bag. The company will fill this with 30 lb of steel shot and lift it up and drop it on a sheet of plywood to test the strength of the plywood. I make about one of these a year. One picture of how I sew the bottom in and the other picture of with the solid plug in place.
  11. Believe me, my name isn't anywhere on that saddle. Didn't want anyone to know that I built it.
  12. Check my facebook page pictures. https://www.facebook.com/photo.php?fbid=230419010305898&set=pb.137916762889457.-2207520000.1371129244.&type=3&theater
  13. Some projects I don't use paint. I use color fine tip markers. You can get them in almost any color now. Use the permanent ones, not the water base ones.
  14. I make round bottom leather bags for a company once in a while and that is my main experience with sewing round gussets. The bottoms are 10 1/2 inche circles. I have sewn a few purses with round gussets, about 1" radius in each corner, and it was hard and you had to be careful. It comes with a half moon needle plate and a flat one.
  15. I have been looking for a few years trying to see if someone else has this tool, but haven't found anyone. Wilford Lewis got this from his father when he was young. Will died almost 10 years ago when he was 82. I use this tooling as my signature tooling since I seem to be the only one who can do it.
  16. Here is a picture of the tooling What do you know. I was wrong about the company Must have been thinking about the company I was looking for who made some conchos I wanted to find. The name on the stamp is: F. K. R. MCH. CO. Dallas TX.
  17. Already sent an support email to them about it.
  18. there is no number to block, it's just "unknown" Also Virgin Mobile doesn't give you the option to block calls
  19. Yesterday I recieved 3 phone calls on my business cell phone with the caller ID of "Unknown" When I answered there is no one there but country and western music playing in the background. So I stopped answering the phone since I only have 300 min a month. Got up this morning and there were 11 voice messages in 30 mins from this person all with just the music. Today he has started it again with 6 calls. What can I do about this?
  20. Very interesting designs. Of all your scans I still don't see the design of the one that I have. Of course it was made by a company in NY that went out of business in the 1930s.
  21. I use my Adler 205-370 with the curve plate (table) installed.
  22. I use a heavy cotton cloth with bees wax rubbed in it.
  23. I place then where the customer wants them. So it is a matter of what you like and the style of collar you use.
  24. I was digging around the back of the shop the other day and I found a box I never noticed before. I opened it up and in it was every holster pattern in cardboard that Wilford Lewis made for over 50 years. There was even a metal model gun complete with a screw on silencer. Wonder who he made that holster for?
