    Razor strop second try

Thanks Rohn. Fun to make that carving for sure. I just used part of a craft aid and went from there

    Razor strop second try

Ok tried another razor strop. Came out better than the first. Did a simple maple leaf carving and some stamping. Veg tan strop. Brown end is skirting. All Wickett and Craig. Just thought I'd share what came off the bench today.

    Straight razor strop

Thanks Rohn appreciate the compliment Times change for sure and I bet you are correct. Friend of mine who likes straight razor shaving is getting this to try out . I opted to just use neats foot oil on the back. I'm sure he will use and enjoy it and figure out what to do!

    Straight razor strop

Something new for me. Trying to make a straight razor strop. Lot of data out there about type of leather works best and lots of conflicting thoughts on burnish dont burnish what to finish with etc. So I'm not sure if Ishould bevel the edges or not. And should i use neats foot oil it something else to finish it. Overall I'm happy with the results. My stitch on the back side got messed up cause I skived too much away. But that is easily fixed . I thought I could get away with it so i keep going oh well. 2.5 inches wide 25.5 inches long 16 inches useable for stroping Did some.basic stamping on the handle. Handle is wicket and craig skirting and the veg tan is also w&c. 8 ounce. Thoughts always welcome
  6. Very nice. What did you line it with? Love the lacing and the whole flow of it. Where's the knife ! Ross
  7. All of that is great the rod the reel and the leather work. I've made 2 bamboo rods and yes why buy one when I can spend three times as much making one...oh wait leather was the same thing....and knife making hmmm Making is still the best. Using stuff you made makes the experiences outdoors even more special imo. Enjoy those they came out wonderful
  8. Couple of sheaths I finished up. The antler handled knife I made. The wood handled one is a older factory knife I had around. Nothing special but cleaned up nice and is a user for sure. Both sheaths are wickett and craig skirting. The antler one has brown deer skin liner and the wood handle one black calf skin(figured I would try it had some scrap). Some basic tooling on both. Antler one I added the black accent leather piece for an extra detail. Thoughts welcomed as always. Always looking to improve.
  9. Thank you sir. I'm not sure this is art but I appreciate the compliment. The carvings are fun and add something to it. I am still very much learning how to do it.
  10. Just finished the sheath tonight. Knife is a stock removal blade I made from O-1 tool steel. Handle is antler with a face I carved in the end of it. Wicket and Craig saddle skirting, brown deer skin liner, some basic stamping to pretty it up. Added the black leather on the front just as another detail. As always constructive criticism welcome
  11. Looks really nice to me. The hair on hide makes for a nice contrast and sets it off. Ross
  12. Thanks. That's deer skin. Not my idea I learned it from Paul Longs sheath making videos. Basically you put good side to good side and sew one line across near the top. Then put contact cement on both bad sides and roll it over the top and glue. Then cut off the excess deer hide and skive the edges so the deer skin doesn't show. Then you add the back and stitch the sheath together. When you roll it you hide that single stitch line too. Makes a nice look and holds the blade some too. Ross
  13. Hi Kerri, I agree on the pins on the bolsters. In this case the are a bit proud I carefully penened them over then buffed them to smooth them. It will allow some grip. The bolsters are also epoxied on as well. I like the knobby look in this case so I didn't sand and smooth them all the way after peening. On the angled part of the spine is a false swedge. Extensing to the tip. More for looks then anything else. Good eye? Thanks for compliments. I try hard to produce a quality product that is pleasing to look at as well as functional! Happy Thanksgiving all Ross
  14. Thanks chuck Thanks. Yes I feel the smaller ones can be tougher to keep lined up!
  15. Thanks rockoboy. I always like the white thread contrast. However some do not. I could dye it of course . Or gasp but colored thread and change it
  16. Just finished this one tonight. Knife is a stock removal blade I made from O-1 tool steel. Handle is elk antler bolster and womans tongue wood. I was happy with how the sheath turned out. Wicket and Craig saddle skirting, green deer skin liner, carved oak leaf and basket weave stamping. Stitched on a needle awl Randal Campbell sewing machine. As always constructive criticism welcome
  17. Really like the contrasting colors. The green seems just right. Not normally what I would go for but nice work!
  18. Opaul, Thank you. It does give it a nice touch. Check out Paul long. He goes by sheathmaker on the forum here. There are some great sheath tutorials he made . Chris Crawford knives did the videoing you can see snippets on his website. I have no connection to him or the videos. But really learned a lot from those videos and also his posts on here. He does all his sheaths with lined leather. It also helps hold the knife in place without wet forming. Thank you and go for it!
  19. Cardinal, Thanks for the compliment. I do my best to achieve balance when I make any knife. Sometimes I get it right sometimes I don't. I always shoot for comfort and usability and I want the weight balance to be correct as well. Meaning not too heavy in front or back but a nice middle range if that makes sense. I was tickled how well this one came out in that regard. Thanks for mentioning it! Ross
  20. Thanks battlemunky. I appreciate the nice thoughts.
  21. Thanks. I do wonder if it will ever get used without the belt loop but it still has benefits ifnthe owner chooses...
