  1. Sometimes it's important to see your progress when you make things. I believe as makers we are perfectionists and hard on our work. In many ways it is what drives me forward to improve. I was struck by this today. I made this knife many years ago . Small blade very useful. O-1 tool steel. Tapered tang and maple handle. I decided to make a new sheath for it. When complete I was struck by the progress I've made. The original is fine, functional basic pouch sheath. Still working fine. Hand sewn with waxed thread. The new one on the left is an advancement. A lot of which is thanks to Paul longs sheath tutorials. I do not know Paul but I've learned a lot from his sheaths. This one is lined with deer skin to hold the knife in place. Some basic stamping on the front. The sheath is a butterfly style. While it doesnt improve function it looks nice and takes a little more skill. It is machine sewn. But that is more due to saving time. Overall I'm pleased with the package. Keep making folks. Enjoy the journey . Stop and see your improvement once in a while and see how else you can improve too.
  2. Appreciate that. Thank you. Not my idea but something I've seen I am happy with the results for sure. Thanks Bill
  3. For sure Bruce. Good advice too. Shipping these days is getting very pricey
  4. You can see it on the other post but just in case here are a couple pics too. Thank you
  5. Folks, I posted this Bowie and sheath I made up in the show off section here: Figured you all might want a look too.
  6. Stunning work. Thanks for sharing
  7. It does fit the hand nicely. I've had several comments about that and everyone who has held it agrees Thank you The footprints have special meaning to the new owner. Kinda a trademark of sorts. I have to remember to ask why they are important to him as I believe there is some meaning behind it. Yes I actually ran the leather through the splitter then cut out the foot prints and the put red leather behind it. Glued it back together and sewed around the foot prints. Here I realize next time I will run the red leather the whole way so I dont have a bump around the foot prints. I did skive around the red but it's still noticable. Although it's ok imo. I think if I went o the edgea and skiver there it might have been better. Nick, No it's not my design I've seen them before on some knives. Just my take on it. The brass button or knob if u will. I turned on a lathe so its bigger which I liked. My thought on it was with such a large knife if you wanted to just keep it in a pack you can juse the sheath and bow tie strap. If you want it on your belt you can put the belt loop on it. The other issue I had was the large guard. If I looped the back piece around I felt it would have been very large towards the top and would have needed a large wedge. I thought that would look funny at best and not fit great either. Hope that makes sense Thanks for the nice thoughts. Ross
  8. This is a custom Bowie knive I just finished. Stock removal knife out if O-1 elk antler and wood handle. Leathe sheath with Bowie tie hold down and removable belt loop. As always open to constructive comments! Ross
  9. First off great job on making your own knife and sheath. You should be very proud and happy with your accomplishments! Dont quit. Each mistake and misstep is a building block to making better sheaths and knives. You will never stop learning while you are making. I have made over 100 knives now north of 130 I think. I am amazed looking back at my first one the difference and the improvement. That being said I still make mistakes or at least new ones and sometimes old ones. But it is always worth it to create. Knife making is how I found leatherwork cause I needed sheaths and now I do more leatherworking than knives. Ok some thoughts on the sheath, it appears to have a welt which is good. Keeps the balde from slicing the thread directly. In a pouch sheath I like them to sit in a little deeper.(Paul Long who is an expert sheath maker inbeliwve recommends 2 fingers worth sticking out the top of a sheath) I always worry about them coming out If you are bending over etc. The belt loop on the rear looks like a snap. If it is I assume it's so you can just slip behind the belt and snap it on. I wonder if it could unsnap and fall off? Other possibilities are to sew the belt.loop in place prior to sewing up the sheath or riveting it in place. I cant quite tell but the stamping looks like a basket weave stamp. It would appear to be overlapped on both posts. If that was intentional that's fine. However if you wanted a true basket weave, you stamp one then drop down and overlap one post, stamp then back up and overlap one post. Lot of tutorials out there on this site you tube etc. I have a sheath I did the basket weave all wrong. Was real proud of it till I realized the error lol....but I learned. Hope you dont think I'm being overly critical just thoughts on how to improve. Folks on here are super helpful and it's a lot of the reason my leather work has improved. Enjoy the journey Ross Ps I second the thought of make another and see the improvement!

    Fishing creel fixup

All of the leather covering I used to strengthen and repair the gaps. With leather glued and buck stitched through parts of the basket above and below problem areas . So hopefully it holds up. I did some very casual research into re doing the basket weaves but didn't go that route and I think it wouldnt have been easy at least from my no knowledge of how it's done. Thanks for the kind words!

    Fishing creel fixup

I have a friend who has this old fishing creel. He just keeps his fly boxes in it and brings it fishing with him. Its was tired and about ready for the trash heap. I found put it belonged to his dad so I said I'd look at it figuring no way to fix. However some internet searching and some study lead me to this with the help of leather. It should hold up a while longer yet. The strap I was able to save that has the ll bean on it and the front buckle. The lid inmade if leather and stamped initials and carved the leaves. Double loop lacing in calf skin around it. The strap around the top and underneath I think is bridle. The parts on the creel are a oil tan and I buck stitched them in place. Lot of work but a labor of love. I'm looking forward to surprising him with it. Thoughts and improvements welcomed as always.
  15. That is for sure the truth
  16. Thanks Tom. I'm hoping to get a pic of it on the car at some point. Thanks! It's the same script that is on the car or at least close Ross
  17. Hi folks, So this is a bit different. This doodad holds up the crank handle on a 1924 Model T Ford. I made it for a friend. Some carving work and then some basic letter stamping. I did bevel around the letters and numbers on part of it so it popped some. I did a two tone color to make it stand out. Felt ok about the carving. The Ford I felt like I got off a bit but overall ok. The Sheridan touch I did a lot of contouring with a modeling spoon which I was happy with as always practice helps and this was more practice! Happy Monday Ross
  18. Thanks Bull and yep it will function just fine! Interesting thought
