Wallet with Carving
Rossr replied to Rossr's topic in Purses, Wallets, Belts and Miscellaneous Pocket Items
Yin, I didnt dilute at all. But I brushed on really lightly. I have noticed if I slather it on its much darker. The carving part is around 4 and the rest 3 ish. I did skive the edges down which helped some. I always struggle with leather weights on wallets, part of why I dont like em. Glad you guys like the eagle....i feel like I could do much better on it, gets tough that small though for me anyway lol -
Wallet with Carving

Fiebings Pro Dye Dark Brown Thanks for the compliment! -
I dont make many wallets. Just never got the knack for em down well. Might just be a practice issue. Anyway I was asked to make a custom wallet as a gift for a Boy scout who just earned his eagle. So here it is: Veg tan leather inside and out. Carved with initials on the right and an eagle on the left. Decided to lace the outside of it as well. Came out ok I thought. The eagle could be better in my opinion. Ross

Just a great topic.. One of the best I have seen on here. There is so much to be gained from seeing each others workspaces and the ideas generated by that. Thanks again @Mjolnir Ross

So as I progress along in leatherwork I am starting to consider better edgers. I seem to use them the most of all the hand tools and I currently am using Tandy style ones. I have no real complaints I have sharpened them and they work. However have been looking at some of the better tools out there and seems most opinions I can find on the board here leans towards better ones. I have seen Barry Kings, Bob Beard and The older cs osbournes mentioned many times. Also Watt tools too. Few others that slip my mind at the moment.... So I am curious what are folks favorites. I am also curious if folks prefer the bissonnette type more than the regular slotted type. I have never had a chance to try a bissonnette style but seems like they might function better with the ability to pull or push. Curious your thoughts and Thanks Ross

Did I mention the occasional quarter too lol....i suspect we all have used what ever we had about

Thats a great point. I havent used it on wet or cased leather yet but I can see that being smart to file the edge off. Gary If you had a center line you could do it by measurement. I like that on the windfires there are lines centered on each circle to line them up. Yes you could cut with them. However for 3 bucks...yours is hard to beat too and I may have to find something like that in the future. I got tired of using jar lids, cans etc that was around the shop.....hence why I got the template. One thing I noticed on mine there is a ridge in the middle both inside and out. I am not sure if this is intentional or due to how they are made. ITs not a problem really but if you used a standard graphite pencil it grooves it as you trace the circle. Again not a biggie....but makes me curious Does yours have that @alpha2 I would love to have the larger one too...but I am not ready to pony up for that one

I recently bought the smaller circle tool from windfire designs and I am real happy with it. Bit pricey but I suspect it will outlast me Ross

Prototype Notepad holder
Rossr replied to YinTx's topic in Purses, Wallets, Belts and Miscellaneous Pocket Items
Looks nice to me. I see the bevel goes way out. But I know one thing I have done to help smooth is after i bevel with the mallet and tool. I will just take the beveling stamp and if its a smooth bevel I will take the bevel and kind tilt it one way and drag it along to smooth it out. Not sure that makes sense. But its does work well. -
I want to second wizcrafts recommendation. I have posted over in the sewing machine forum and have gotten great help from great folks. Like Wiz ,Uwe and many others. To the point where I was pointed at the problem and then solutions Including videos of the right way to adjust things. I cant thank those folks enough for their knowledge and time. I live about 2 hours from anyone who works on the larger commercial leather machines so it was a great help to me....hope you find the solutions...nice table btw! Ross

Something Different...
Rossr replied to Rolandranch's topic in Purses, Wallets, Belts and Miscellaneous Pocket Items
hmmm first off neat idea. Wondering if for a future attempt if there is one....would you use fabric on the upper part to make it easier to tie and have the tooled leather part as the main body of the tie that shows down the front where you tool.....perhaps also instead of oil using some other finish would work better? like pecards or snow proof...or perhaps even resolene....just spit balling here Ross- 28 replies

Chrome tan, Veg tan, Other tan....Help me understand
Rossr replied to Rossr's topic in Leatherwork Conversation
@sheathmaker I want to Thank Paul for chiming in with his extensive experience. Thank you to everyone for commented as well! Lot of great conversation here, i have to admit I am not as concerned about chrome tan and metal as I was prior to this posting. I am a firm believer that we all stand on the shoulders of those who came before us. I also think it is important to share our knowledge and learn and teach when we can, of course part of that is learning new things or finding out things we thought we knew werent so.....keep on sharing folks..its one of the reasons I enjoy the discussions on this forum...so much to learn.
