Chrome tan, Veg tan, Other tan....Help me understand
Rossr replied to Rossr's topic in Leatherwork Conversation
I have done some google searches and found many forums and one off suggestions not to use chrome tan for knife, axe sheaths or holsters Then I did stumble on this ....On reddit just to add more confusion https://www.reddit.com/r/Leathercraft/comments/4y005l/solved_can_chrome_tanned_leathers_be_used_for/ Again for me this is a issue of if I start to produce lined sheaths and I use deer skin, just want to be sure that its not going to rust the blade. I will say i am still searching for deer hide that is veg tan..... One thing I am confident on is moisture in any leather will rust your blades. -
I did it again! Wrong side out!

Jeff, Been there done that.....it happens. I try to check twice cut once mentality...course with sheaths...for me its more like check 10 times lol Ross -
Chrome tan, Veg tan, Other tan....Help me understand
Rossr replied to Rossr's topic in Leatherwork Conversation
In regards I would agree here with kiwi, I have had knives in veg tan for years as well with no issues . Its just important to note that leather can hold the moisture. Also bear in mind if you are using a knife in the outdoors so in cold weather you have a higher chance of moisture issues once back in side or if you were out in the rain or snow. If you are in a climate controlled area...whole different ball game So seems we have a lot of things in play here, from what I can take from above, overall chrome tan probably not good for metal. Although we have a vote saying that might be false. Would love some more data on that. In regards to knife sheaths or holsters it seems to me safest avenue is veg tan. IF it can be found of course and is cost effective. Deer hide seems there is a lot around but on some quick searches the veg tan variety seems harder to find. I do like the thought and style of lining a sheath with it...but would hate to have a $500 knife ruined cause of the wrong leather. This has been very informative so far..mare data the better. Ross -
Chrome tan, Veg tan, Other tan....Help me understand
Rossr replied to Rossr's topic in Leatherwork Conversation
Ok this is kinda what I thought. So lets review: All Leathers can be tanned either way and the only way to know would be to ask the tannery you buy from or if it was listed when you purchased. Which then leads me too what happens when you buy from a secondary seller, I will use Maverick leathers as an example. Understand I have no issue with Maverick nor am I picking on them. I bought a couple of deer hides from them. I didnt ask what kind or tanning nor did the listing say. I would suspect its possible that may not know either. So now being educated I will ask in the future of course. Mike That is a great informative article and I dont think I have stumbled on that one before. Part of the reason I posted the question was to educate not just myself but others. Your article is great for that. Thank you! Ross -
Ok folks, I have done some reading and searching on this topic but I am still unclear. I make a knife sheaths and have made some holsters of the years. I used veg tan for that. Mainly so I can tool or carve. I have also read over the years that chrome tan is a no go with anything metal ie guns, knife blades etc. In regards to sheaths I have made I recommend folks kep thoer knives stored outside the sheath since the leather can hold moisture. That being said I am guilty of not doing that and have had litttle problems over the years. So with that in mind I want to understand what leathers are chrome tanned? Veg tan: Not chrome Bison: Chrome I think Deer: ?? This one interests me as it seems this is used to line sheaths which is very nice but I want to make sure that it is ok Pig:?? Others? Thanks Folks Ross

Hey Mutt, That is Golden Brown Pro Dye by Fiebings. I only use the pro dyes from fieblings at this point. For me its been the easiest to use and gives the most consistent result. I just wiped it on circular pattern with a hunk of sheep wool. Finished with Tan kote same think wiped on in circular fashion Kind word btw Thank you Thank you sir

Some very kind words, Now would you like me to highlight what I thought were my mistakes LOL. Overall I was pretty happy with this one and knew it would be a challenge the rope part of the bead necklace took some time but looked ok in my opinion. Thanks Sir Appreciate that Dun

Well apparently two was not enough so I made another one. This one I am going to see about donating for a auction. If any of you know the symbols on the front you can guess what for... Anyway, Veg tan leather, carved and did some simple quilting on it. The middle piece is oil tan this time just to mix it up. I sewed it on the Juki-lu563...still learning but getting better. Inside lined with a waxed pig suede and veg tan for the flaps. Starting to get a real process down on these. May have to consider making some for sale at some point. Constructive criticism always welcome Ross https://www.facebook.com/EinhornLLC/videos/1028263387312029/

Rattlesnake Knife Sheath
Rossr replied to Rolandranch's topic in Gun Holsters, Rifle Slings and Knife Sheathes
Very nice sheath work there, and a pretty knife as well. Remind me not to live in AZ....73 rattle snakes...you said...Ill pass lol Looking forward to seeing the back as well. -
I will second what everyone says. I have taught basic leather work at a summer camp and a couple years ago I took the time to make two of them up form Al Stholmans plans. Made a world of difference for the kids and then i realized how Hard I had made it on myself ...needless to say I made one. Mine was a simple one that goes under my legs but still...its worth the time to make in my opinion Ross

Ok folks so I think we got it Here's a picture of front and back stitch. Blue is the top and black thread is the bottom stitch, and I have also attached a video. You will notice no more snaps or catches!!! We did have to do some fixing of the needle and hook timing too but it all worked out and learned an awful lot about the machine in the process. I cant thank you guys enough for sharing information. IF you guys notice anything else by all means say so but I think over all its a winner https://www.facebook.com/EinhornLLC/videos/1026374677500900/ Thanks everyone Ross

Sorry this is the 225 video starting at the 4:50 mark for this application I think. The above video I had used previous and owe thanks to uwe as well. It corrected some issues I had. Uwe these videos you have made are top notch!
-
Uwe, That is great visual and thank you for getting me an understanding of proper names of the parts too. I dont like calling things the round thing or square item. Upon some research i found a a video you made about a Consew 225. In the interest of understanding for others too.I gather the process is the same on the juki lu 563? Here is that link, starting about 4:50minute mark. Ross

Ok so much improvement thanks to the suggestions above. the last catch you can see in the photo here and also video. The picture you can see the blue thread is actually behind the square part there. This doesnt always do that but it does it enough....I almost feel this is a timing issue and I need to some how change the travel on that coming around? Current video also shows it to some extent. That beind said tension is able to be adjusted and its laying a nice stitch pretty even with the leather front and back, https://www.facebook.com/EinhornLLC/videos/1026374677500900/

I used 69 thread and it still catches a little. Surprisingly using a 24 needle(i didnt change it out) it sewed pretty tight. I then changed it to 92 thread for sure catches with that size. I used a size 20 needle and its seemed to sew pretty well....just trying to add as much data as possible Thanks Ross
-
An additional note. The singer is using 69 thread size. The juki in video is 138

Hi folks, Recently I started to really go over the flat bed machines I have. First attacked the singer 111 W 155. Sewed ok but always seemed to have some tension issues. After much reading of posts on here, some google searches, and the manual. It is now nicely adjusted and the tension is able to be adjusted easily. So with this in mind we attacked the Juki. There has always been some jerking to it and it sewed ok and the tension was ok. But upon closer study we learned that it should be much better. So After much research and study of the machine we think we found the issue but not sure what to do about it. Please see attached video. Our first realization was the needle was jerking a bit and the tension spring that holds the thread up on the top seemed to jerk twice. In the video you can hear it click. IF you watch closely you can see the first click and catch and then a second one happening. Both times it seems to catch on the little tabby thing(Highly technical term there, if you need to pause to look it up I understand) that is sticking under the pressor foot plate. The thread gets very tight at those two points causing the jerking. Upon study of the singer. This does not happen and it delightfully slides across and up to complete the stitch. So not sure what to do with it. Myself and father are working on it. Both of us are mechanical He is very Mechanical. Sewing machines are new to us though so its a learning curve. Hoping someone knows of an adjustment we have'nt seen or understood. or is it an issue of something needing to be filed down? https://www.facebook.com/EinhornLLC/videos/1024171401054561/

Folks this machine is sold. Feel free to remove or lock Thanks Ross

Rossr replied to Brown64's topic in Purses, Wallets, Belts and Miscellaneous Pocket Items
Both look like nice work to me. I think the hands are great. The only thing on the belt that jumps at me i the edges need some more burnishing in my opinion...but its minor to me -
Thanks Fire It always shows up after I add dye. I am for sure hard on myself...its what drives us all to improve! Thanks for the compliment.
