Yep if it teaches you a skill and you get a pair of boots out of it...I can see the appeal if that is a way you want to go. There are a lot of courses out there, bamboo fly rods windsor chairs etc.......some folks do them instead of say a vacation on the beach

yep that a serious investment.

On the Chris Crawford website you can buy the DVD or stream it for a few bucks less, You always have access to it by logging into the site once you purchase it is how I understand it. Regardless, I found it useful. I have a ton of mistakes on that one...but I learned and that is what counts R

Ok folks I spent some time today and followed Pauls video to make this sheath. Quite an experience and Like always there is more work to be done. Please forgive the rivet in the sheath, that is due to my screw up when I was sewing. I was using a needle awl machine and made an error and that was a solution. I doubt I will sell this sheath with the knife, but wanted to finish regardless. The knife on the right is the original veg tan wet molded sheath I made. The one on the left is following the tutorial. I learned a lot doing this and I really like the way the liner holds the knife in the sheath. No wet molding. I need to consider how much pressure the needle awl machine put on the sheath. Seemed a bit much. In this case I needed to be a little larger on the right side going up to where that rivet is, my fault for getting two small and I sewed too close to the edge. I will fix that in the future. I am really trying to improve my sheath game so I can start to offer my services to knifemakers as another revenue stream. Have a great New year everyone Ross

I would challenge that notion Mutt. For the sake of $37(streaming ...little more if you want a cd) You get access to Years of knowledge in this case for making sheaths. We all routinely spend $$$ on tools that may or may not work out. While I have progress from hobby into more of a business, I wish I had viewed this years ago. Not saying its right for everyone or that you should run out and buy it. But worth looking at what is out there for sure. Even as a hobby we all are on here sharing knowledge and trying to improve. Just food for thought

Damascus, Antler and Leather......My oh My.
Rossr replied to Rossr's topic in Gun Holsters, Rifle Slings and Knife Sheathes
New year starts tomorrow! get that blank out and figure out what handle you will put on it and get to work. Then make a great sheath for it too!! Thanks for the compliment. -
Funny I have that exact base in my shop. Granted I dont have the machine that goes on top of it. It now has a pantograph on it. Really neat to see the machine that goes with it. Should be fun to stitch with... Ross

Folks, As some of you may know I make knives and also do leather work. The reason I started leather was to make sheaths for the knives. Since then leather has taken over somewhat but that is another matter. Anyway. I decided today to purchase the pouch sheath making tutorial by Paul Long. You can find it on Chris Crawford knife site and if I understand correct Chris is the one who made the video. Anyway what a great informative video, I picked up a lot of things that I am looking forward to trying. There are three other videos as well. There are lots of tutorials out there and I know many free ones on you tube. But to me this one was well worth the price and I have little doubt will improve my sheaths in the future. I have no ties to Paul or Chris and I think Paul is on this forum. But Just felt I should share for anyone out there considering sheaths and this video...just do it Ross

Hey Rossr! My recent Sheath
Rossr replied to CaptQuirk's topic in Gun Holsters, Rifle Slings and Knife Sheathes
Interesting on the welt, i never thought of trying it that way, I may have to give it a Go. @alpha2 I have done what you drew there in the past and seems to work fine. I have also cut it out all the way and the middle well...became key rings and such. On the quick open I am curious on two things, one is it hitting the rivet to pull it open? Then when it is in the sheath what stops you from say hitting it hard and getting cut since it looks like the leather is open on the sides? Is there a pattern out there? Also how does one go about putting the knife into the sheath..am I right in thinking its a cross draw? Ross -
Hey Rossr! My recent Sheath
Rossr replied to CaptQuirk's topic in Gun Holsters, Rifle Slings and Knife Sheathes
Capt, Looks like nice work to me. Appreciate the compliment on mine. But I think yours is just as nice! Did you put a welt in that big sheath? Also curious about the rivets. I have done that sometimes too But have read somewhere over the years that rivets can be bad too since if the blade hits them. Which as I understand is why folks use welts so you dont cut the stitching and its easier on the blade. Just food for thought. The bottom two is an intersting design. why so large? Just curious I see the knife open in the one but I assume that is for show not how it goes in it I like em Ross -
Damascus, Antler and Leather......My oh My.
Rossr replied to Rossr's topic in Gun Holsters, Rifle Slings and Knife Sheathes
http://www.alabamadamascussteel.com/ Its a company that makes damascus steel. I bought a billet which is a rectangle hunk of damascus and then I cut out the knife shape I want and grind the bevels. I just want credit where credit is due and to always represent my work correctly. I dont want anyone thinking I personally made the damascus myself. So I pointed out the damascus maker. Please note I am not affiliated with the company at all and just found them on the net. I am pleased with the damascus they made thought. Thanks Mutt! -

Ok I will play along. My business is Named Einhorn. Einhorn is German for Unicorn and as a goal we make unique stuff! My screen name is less exciting as that is just my name Ross. Ross -
Finished this knife off this week. Damascus blade(Damascus from Alabama Damascus, profiled, bevels ground, heat treated by me though). Handle guard is damascus, red spacers some kind of burl wood, stacked leather and then antler. Sheath is veg tan leather dyed mahogany fieblings. Got to finish up the snap yet and put finish on it but figured I would put a pic up of it. Overall happy with the results. The learning never ends though!

Dial Indicator on a Campbell Randall Needle Awl Machine
Rossr replied to Rossr's topic in Leather Sewing Machines
Not really sure, I looked at it. and it reads as follows: 10,000,000 dial between 1-2 1,000,000 dial Between 8-9 100,000 dial between 0-1 ..before the 1 10,000 between 6-7 1,000 between 1-2 100 between 4-5 10 between 1-2 0 between 8-9 So If I read from bottom up..I think 18,061418...or a heck of a lot. -

Latest Knife and Sheath
Rossr replied to Rossr's topic in Gun Holsters, Rifle Slings and Knife Sheathes
It may have been damascus, there are some tremendously talented sword makers out and there and could have been made of damascus. Just to be clear I dont want to take anything away from the makers of damscus or damscus knives out there. It takes a lot of work and skill to produce damascus. But strictly from a metallurgy stand point I feel there are better function options out there. I really like the look of feather damascus in knives and some day I suspect I may make a knife out of that pattern.... Ross -
