  1. I doubt with tanning, feeding, vet costs, and everything else you will get a good return on your idea. Most people who farm have been or have family who have been farmers. They do know something about it. I am sure you will not come out further ahead because of it. You also have to worry about cougars, wolves etc. Some people put a mule or donkey on their land to keep wolves and coyotes away but that won't stop a cougar. If you have kids and you plan to slaughter this animal, anticipate that you will not be a big star in their lives and they will remember it forever. Remember farmers never take holidays unless they have someone who is coming by to check on things and make sure it has food and water, and something or someone hasn't killed or made off with it. Cattle rustling isn't what it was in the old west, but it still exists.
  2. Bonjour et bienvenue from Calgary, Alberta. Horses being a passion will always be a passion and so will leather. Welcome to the forum and drop by chat some evening.
  3. You should never quote a price if you have no concept of how much it will cost to make it. You research the cost first before putting it out there to people to buy. You won't find anyone to do this if they don't know the work involved. It is like me saying I want a dream house built but they have to tell me how much before I show them the plans. There is not a contractor anywhere that will do it without knowing what it will cost them first.
  4. First there are regulations on size of land. You cannot raise a cow or cattle in the city. You need so many acres per cow and horse. the rest depends on if it is a good year or bad year grain wise. Are you growing your own wheat etc. Do you plan to have calves, do you have a bull, are you planning on a bull. Do you know how to pull calves during calving season. Go talk to agriculture Canada ant then talk to farmers . These are not cats, dogs, or goldfish. This is not waking up one days and saying, I think I will raise some cattle because I don't want to pay for leather. Raising cattle does not insure great leather.
  5. I have never been a sailor but the sea and I have an affinity. I guess it is my Viking heritage. My sister rows a longboat in Vancouver B.C..
  6. Well here are some pictures of stuff I did 30 years ago. They are pictures of pictures. So because of the glossy finish, with the front view of the black vest there looks like a red streak but isn't. The clock looks tilted and isn't.
  7. Very nice, just love it.
  8. Welcome to the greatest leatherwork site on the net. Come join us in chat some evening. Hello from Calgary, Alberta, Canada home of the Calgary Stampede and the 1988 winter Olympics.
  9. Beautiful work, Thor. Yes, it did require quite a big of skiving but still, good job!
  10. I won't be able to hold onto any bit coins. So any I get will roll over very quickly.
  11. Constabulary, No one HAS to do it. It was mainly a suggestion. I surely doubt 5000 people will come thundering to my site because I have bit coin. I am putting it there because it is not a pain in the butt to transpose to fiat. If I can make more money by running it, then why not. If I don't have to pay taxes on it, even better. We are all adults it is each persons individual choice to do it or not. Beaverslayer was just giving us a heads up on how to move business forward. If it works it works. If it doesn't, no harm, no foul. It doesn't cost me anything and that is good with me.
  12. Beaverslayer, Thanks. If I need your assistance I will contact you. i do have websites and I do them myself. I will be adding bit coin to my websites. It was good he was able to put it that I could visualize it and it was so much less confusing than I felt it would be. The risk involved in this is maybe holding it instead of changing it over to Fiat. But it can also be a benefit. Unlike currency the bottom won't fall out but it can go higher or lower. it is a combination of playing the barter stock market. I like it does not cost me a cent to hook it up to my business. It only costs a miniature amount of money per transaction. I don't believe I will get a million transactions off the bat.
  13. Beaverslayer, I want to thank you for bringing up bit coin. I have spent all day researching this and speaking with a company in Vancouver, https://www.quadrigacx.com I suggest everyone else in Canada who wants to find out more please contact them. The nice fellow who explained it to me made it all clear. This is something that will increase our business not make it a problem. Actually Paypal is considering setting up for bit coin also. The best part is you can take everything else and this too. I have decided to sign up and with this you don't lose money but a chance to make more. It is not like Fiat currency it is not physical therefore it confuses governments. I am sure anyone anywhere who would like to discuss bit coin with this company could. They have both an online POS and a brick and mortar. They charge one percent of each transaction. No set up fees or months fees and nothing to send into the government. The system can transpose the bit coin into USD, CAD or gold and then even direct deposit it into your bank account.
  14. Although I am leery of this, it does require a bit more scrutiny on my behalf. If I find it is easy to switch the bit coins to my bank account then I would probably be on board with this. But I must take a deeper look into this.
  15. So far in Alberta and BC this is what I have found for businesses that accept Bitcoin. 1 Winery in Kelowna 2. sausage shop in Vancouver 3. Restaurant Vancouver 4.A store in Vancouver 5 A Restaurant in Edmonton This is not something that tells me I must throw my money away for bit coin use. It is probably a great idea but: Tim Horton's, Safeway, Coop, Gas Stations, Car Dealerships,Enmax, Telus, do not recognize this and Stephen Harper wants you to pay your taxes in money, they won't accept bit coin. I can't pay Comicon, Horror Con or any other show I do in bit coin. Right now it is not only not feasible but definitely not logical for me to accept what I can't use. Now if in the future more larger companies are on board with it then I will consider it but to buy one coin for $247. dollars is not beneficial to me. I am not a millionaire and I can't afford to have my money ties up in something I can not use.
  16. I realized while painting pictures that when you use acrylics and they dry on your palette. This is an plastic type of palette ,not wooden one you get a mix of all the colours and you can pull the skin off when it is dry. These are the skins and they are great inlays or even parts for leather or even clothing. They are actually quite strong. This last one is an Elk hide no, not made of paint skins.
  17. I hate to say this, it is all clear as mud to me. I am one of those hands on type of people. I need to personally see how it works. Just the thing right now is I can't go to coop and use it, I can't pay my rent, buy my leather or take the cats to the vet, or fill the car with gas with it so I need to know how it will benefit me. I have heard of bit coins and that they mainly started in Europe. I just can't get a handle on this without seeing it in action. I need to know what currency is it equal too. If I sell someone a belt for $225.USD would bit coin equal that or would it be $225. million. for bit coin or $2.25. I was involved with Calgary Dollars but the big issue is that most people selling things with that were just junk out of their houses. My stuff is new and most did not have the calgary dollars to match the price and would not pay 75% in cold hard cash. With Calgary Dollars I could not buy leather, use it for gas, shop at the stores, give it to the vet or pay my rent with it either.
  18. Quivers, awesome. I have four of those to make. Come into chat sometime and we will all yak it up as usual.
  19. Welcome to the best leather working site on the net. You are correct, leather work is an art, just like fine art painting, or sculptures. It is the act of creating and quite the addiction. I will look forward to seeing your work.
