  1. I lived in NY for a time and got a CCW there, because without it you can't even possess a pistol. 3 sets of fingerprints, FBI contacted, all mental institutions contacted, 3 neighbors or friends have to fill out and notarize a long questionnaire about you, paperwork, paperwork, paperwork, ... and then spending 9 months calling the judge's office each week until it gets signed. Major PITA! Was NY safer than TX with all that? No, not even close. A cop came out of a convenience store and got shot because he accidentally walked between two groups that were trying to rip each other off for drugs/money. Their guns? Stolen, of course! Only law-abiding citizens obey the law. When you pass laws against gun ownership/possession/carry/use, you only punish the good guys. As far as I'm concerned, open-carry should be universally allowed. I don't care who else is carrying, as long as I have the right to do the same. Nobody tries to rob a shooting range!
  2. The gun ranges here are flooded with people getting their CCWs. Ammo - as well as reloading components - have become extremely scarce.
  3. I think the best choice would be to put wheels on it, like a cannon. I'm all for 'bigger is better', but come on!!!
  4. Here's an easy one by a master: Chuck Burrow's Stitching Pony Tutorial
  5. I was among those who watched it. Loved the show and the movie. Far more depth, breadth, color, and style than any other sci-fi. It was the network nitwits - the 50 IQ guys - that didn't know what to do with it.
  6. Nice job! It always surprised me at just how cheap their budget must have been for that show. Nothing seemed to fit right. Those who never saw "Firefly" might remember the movie version, "Serenity". The show is considered to be one of the all-time best shows that nobody watched. The title confused people, I think.
  7. Those same studies were carried on in Texas and Louisiana. When no evidence of lead poisoning in ducks could be found, the Sierra Club and all the anti-gun folks claimed that the sick ducks were eaten by alligators. That prompted the Louisiana wildlife folks to point out that there were no alligators with lead poisoning from eating those ducks. The anti-hunting and anti-gun folks thought that this ban would kill off shotgun hunting, plain and simple. The reality is that lead poisoning is not common, either from paint or spent bullets. The only time lead was a problem in the environment was when it was used in gasoline, something that was banned in 1990. This is a case of pop-science being used to push through part of a political agenda.
  8. The anti-lead people are going to use it as an excuse to go after more than just paints. Check this out: The California Fish and Game Commission is considering a statewide ban on the use of lead ammunition for hunting. Two years ago, a bill was signed into law that imposed a ban on the use of lead ammunition for hunting in areas occupied by the California condor. Through its hunting regulations, the Commission extended the ban to include .22 rimfire ammunition and expanded the boundaries where the ban applies. Given this track record, the Commission is likely to be receptive to expanding the ban to the borders of the state. From the beginning, proponents of the current ban have wanted to ban lead ammunition statewide. The California condor was simply being used by the anti-hunters and anti-gunners to carry out this agenda. They have already achieved a partial ban. The next step is to take it statewide. If they are successful, they will push to ban the use of lead ammunition for everyone, not just hunters. There is no scientific evidence that lead ammunition is the source of lead affecting the health of condors released to the wild. There is no scientific evidence that lead ammunition is a risk to human health and the environment in California. What is evident is that there is a group of environmental extremists who have friends on the Commission who will not stop until the most affordable, available, and ballistically superior ammunition is banned in your state. They know the damage that such a ban will do to both hunting and shooting participation.
  9. Thanks for the correction.
  10. "Who by worry can add one minute to his life?" (Matthew 6:27) "Gettin' by on gettin' by's my stock in trade Livin' life day to day Pickin' up the pieces wherever they fall Just lettin' it roll, lettin' the high times carry the low Livin' my life easy come, easy go." (Jerry Jeff Walker) Hang in there, amigo.
  11. I still hold out hope that we may secede and put things where they should be - at least for a small corner of the world. I suppose every generation thinks the world has gone insane. You'd have to work pretty hard to convince me that it hasn't gone insane now. Looking back at my ancestors, they had some pretty rough spells to get through. Depressions, food shortages, wars - and I mean close up and personal wars, not just those on the other end of the planet. Sometimes surviving is all you can really hope to do. I must tell y'all that the one thing that scares me more than anything else right now is that the government can use the term "nationalize" and no one but me seems to understand that means giving up a piece of our freedom. They can spend trillions of dollars and no body seems to care that we'll have to pay that all back with interest. (Well, they care, but only about whether or not they can get in line for the handout.) Billions of $$ disappear, and no one in the government - regardless of party - is calling for investigations. (Tells me that when you throw back the sheets, you'll find a few Congressmen in bed with the bad guys!) If nobody is scared about what power is being turned over to a handful of people, how easy will it be for them to destroy us?? The country has voted to become socialist. Please remember that 'Nazi' is short for National Socialist Party. When you give the government control of everything, they can decide to do whatever they want with you. e.e. cummings wrote, "This is the way the world will end, not with a bang but a whimper."
  12. Find a commercial web site with leather holsters. Usually they run quite a bit more. Show him the picture and say, "Normally, I'd have to charge $xx, but for you I'm gonna knock it down to $zz.
  13. This is not long after the anniversary of "The Day the Music Died" (it really didn't, but that's how the song goes). Buddy Holly, Ritchie Valens, and The Big Bopper were killed when their plane iced up during takeoff. It's a very real danger - then and now. The miracle in the Hudson was maybe more of a miracle than most people think. The pilot had to make a lot of decisions in a span of only a few seconds, and they all had to be right. News reports say 3 people missed the connection to this flight. Maybe another small miracle. I pray for the families of those lost on that flight.
  14. Interesting design - it appears to be a type of Mexican loop holster, with snaps added to the loop to make it easy to take apart. I think Tandy carries a book of holster patterns and it should have a similar one in it. Instead of cutting a loop in the back piece, you rivet or sew two pieces on to the back piece to make the loop. The top strap is added the same way. Except for the loop and strap, the rest of the holster is one piece of leather. The best resource is Chuck Burrows' DVD on holsters. (It's well worth the price.) While typing this, I found the book: "How to make Holsters" by Al Stohlman. Page 14 shows how to do the strap, page 15 ("skirt holsters") shows how to do the rest.
  15. I really thought the best match up would have been Steelers vs. Eagles. The Cards have fans outside of Arizona? Hmm. Well, the Cards have surprised everyone this year, so maybe they have a chance. And everyone can swoon over the story of Kurt Warner. But I have to go with Big Ben and the Steelers. They haven't been as overwhelming this year as some past years, but they play every second of the game and somehow find a way to win. Really good teams - the kind that win year after year - are like that. Did I see someone rooting for the Bengals?!? Talk about a team that can find a way to lose!! Before you get mad, remember that this is Houston Texans territory, and they will be comfortably watching the Superbowl at home. This year, next year,...... Very sad. I think the team motto is "Why? Why? Why?", cause that's what the fans are screaming each game.
  16. I don't pretend to be an expert on belts, but I've always felt that the real selling point for leather belts is that they always conform to the shape of your body. (You can pretty much extend that to any leather-wear.)
  17. I used one until I learned to do the saddle stitch. There's an old joke about some tools let you do the job fast, some let you do the job slow, and the tool I have is in-between - it's just a half-fast tool. (If you say that quickly, you may get the joke.) This style of tool has been around for many years and was intended to be a quick field tool that would let you take care of making the hole and doing the stitching all in one piece. As a result, it doesn't do a particularly good job of either. (Again, 'half-fast') As an illustration of my lack of respect for it, the last time I used it was to patch a lawnmower bag bottom with a piece of scrap leather. It does work, but that type of stitch isn't nearly as neat or strong as a saddle stitch.
  18. Last I checked, this is not a political forum. Not everyone is happy that the USA has decided to become a socialist nation. Peaceful transition? Great. Now let Texas secede peacefully and we can all be happy. Furthermore, speeches mean absolutely nothing. "The check is in the mail." I suggest that there are more appropriate forums for political argument.
  19. Chuck Burrows is the best I know on this subject.
  20. Google Chuck Burrows web site. He has plans for a very nice (and simple) pony.
  21. Ouch! That's about the age where they cease to have "parents" and you become "those old people I live with". My best wishes to you!
  22. Cool story! I'm curious: What brought on the lengthy posts? I hope you don't think you're under-appreciated around here! Your little smiling avatar is connected with all things right about this web site. Your story is a reminder that sometimes things work out the way they are supposed to, despite all the things we think are going to happen.
  23. A warning sticker won't work unless you have it in every language on the planet and in Braille. Saw a news article today that says the feds may tax cows a for their contribution to global warming. “The tax for dairy cows could be $175 per cow, and $87.50 per head of beef cattle. The tax on hogs would upwards of $20 per hog,” the release said. “Any operation with more than 25 dairy cows, 50 beef cattle or 200 hogs would have to obtain permits.” See the article at http://www.businessandmedia.org/articles/2...1230165231.aspx Fewer cows, higher priced meat and dairy, and - of course - higher priced leather. Guess I'd better get to practicing on those chicken hides.......
  24. Where were you during the last election? America wants socialism! They want someone to think for them, to take responsibility so they don't have to. Besides, when they get rid of the cows to protect us from global warming, there won't be any leather to work anyway!
  25. Kydex is pretty good stuff. When heated, you can mold it into any shape. You won't have to worry about it corroding like metal and you can make it as wide as you need.
