Holster Design For Comments
TexasJack replied to Bob A's topic in Gun Holsters, Rifle Slings and Knife Sheathes
You can get Kydex and form it to the shape you want for stiffening the strap.Definitely need to bone the interior or double layer the leather so that it's smoother, particularly for what you want to use it for.I haven't seen a holster quite like this posted on here before. I think it's great when someone is trying to do something different. -
The late Bob Engnath set up a pretty good web site with lots of info and it has been maintained intact: Bob Engnath. A couple of others have mentioned the knifenetwork site, and I highly recommend it as well. Good folks - in fact several of them hang out here as well.

If you have the gun, you don't really need a pattern. What style are you considering? Concealed? IWB? OWB? Western? That might help generate some input.

13 oz? Heavy stuff. If you haven't bought the leather yet, you might want to think a bit lighter.I suppose you can substitute just about any glue, if that's what you want. I would suggest that the best choice is rubber cement. It's cheap and if for some reason you screw up, you can pull it apart, clean it up, and start over.

Chuck Burrows has a great DVD on holster making and Tandy carries an Al Stohlman book on making holsters. Neither covers concealed carry type holsters like the one you made. (The LCP is a great pistol, isn't it!) I made an IWB, an OWB, and a pocket-carry holster for the LCP. Because each was a 'first time', they're not particularly pretty, but they work really well. If you haven't yet, you may want to look at the "Elsie Pea" web forum. Lots of stuff related to that pistol on it. Gibbles, you need to get an awl and a stitch wheel (to mark the spots to make holes). It takes some practice, but you'll probably throw away that 4-hole punch after you've used the awl.

IWB holster question
TexasJack replied to rccolt45's topic in Gun Holsters, Rifle Slings and Knife Sheathes
Effectively the same thing. -
The amount of work needed to do that will cost far more than a new knife (maybe several new knives). And it will be nearly impossible to do it without messing up the knife. What CAN be done is to round off the remaining blade so that it can still be used - it'll just be shorter than before. I have a knife that I broke 25 years ago and fixed that way. The trick is to do it so that you don't ruin the structure of the metal. Another thing you can do is try ebay. I did a search and came up with one hit for 'horsemans pocket knife": Click here

How can I shine my leather to make it look like this?
TexasJack replied to NewYorkerInSydney's topic in How Do I Do That?
What are you using to finish the surface? Some things are intended for a high sheen, others are intended to be more dull. Did you ever shine shoes? You have to buff the surface in order to get a good shine. -
New six-gun holster

I really like that one, Dave! Beautiful work (as always). -
I'm pretty sure it's a minor ingredient in Old Bushmills.

A "thin" Christmas this year - for a variety of reasons. I think we've agreed to limit gifts to those that will fit in each person's stocking. The in-laws will be over and they've gone pretty much bust over the last year or two. I'm having a hard time getting through to them that the most important thing is for family to be together, and not the gifting. They're pretty talented artistically, so hopefully they'll make something. I think if I had room for a wish, I'd want a custom maker stamp. (At least something better than what I have.) I have to be careful - I did a pretty good job picking out this wife and she'll try to get anything I ask for. There's another reason I may not get any leather stuff for Christmas: I was a very naughty boy yesterday. I called Microsoft and chewed on them for an extended period about some issues with their software. And I don't intend to apologize.

Howdy! If you search the message boards, you can probably find posts on just about anything related to leather.

Holster pattern please....
TexasJack replied to LuisPaulo's topic in Gun Holsters, Rifle Slings and Knife Sheathes
You can make a dummy from wood using the dimensions, or (better yet) directly from the CZ pistol. It doesn't have to be exact, nor does it have to look like a pistol (except for the part in the holster), thus getting you out from under the rather stupid law. -

The solution of the financial crisis ?
TexasJack replied to oldtimer's topic in All About Us and Off Topic
You left out the part that destroys the whole scenario: A tourist puts $100 on the counter The tax man comes along and takes 25%. The hotel manager pays a debt The tax man comes along and takes 25%, etc. The tourist comes back to find the money gone and has a massive heart attack. The tax man comes along and cleans out the tourist's pockets. The ambulance comes to try to rescue the tourist, but stops giving aid when the tourist's insurance is maxed out. The tourist is buried and the tourist's family is charged an inheritance tax, then billed by the ambulance, the hospital, 3 doctors that weren't even in town that day, the mortician, the coroner, and the tourist's lawyer. With all the money collected by the tax man, the governor is able to pay the prostitute $50,000. She gives the money to an investment firm recommended by the governor which turns out to be a Ponzi scheme. The government then raises taxes to help reimburse all the investment bankers who felt like they didn't make enough money. And the hotel is sold off to a Chinese investment company to pay taxes. Eventually, all these people die and to to Hell for their sins, except for the prostitute. She was the only one not willing to screw the tourist after he was dead. Real life. Real answers. Real pain in the ... -
I guess I shouldn't be shocked. At least we can take comfort in the fact that they didn't remove the hides while the animals were still alive. THAT would be cruel. It does make me wonder about their 'politics'. They object to the animal being slaughtered, but it's ok if it was run over by a truck? There are at least three dead skunks within 5 miles of here along the road. Could I make some $$ selling the pelts in California? Armadillos commit suicide regularly, but I don't know about the quality of the leather. (For those who don't know, armadillo brains are wired wrong. If a vehicle is coming at them on a road, their defense mechanism is to wait until the last second, then jump up, hitting the bumper instead of having the vehicle safely pass overhead.) Thank goodness no farmer would ever lie about a pelt just because he could get more money by saying it was killed "naturally". To think, I used to go to the Renaissance Festival and joke about the Society for Creative Anachronism. Now I have become one.

Need help making sheath
TexasJack replied to airplaneguy's topic in Gun Holsters, Rifle Slings and Knife Sheathes
Chuck Burrows (who hangs around this forum from time to time) has a video that is the VERY best for making sheaths. If you've never made one or if you've made them for years, you'll learn from his video. Google for it and get it. You will NOT regret the price. -
Oh, no! There's PLENTY to criticize on this piece!! I'm just glad I tried to do it on a piece of scrap and didn't waste a good piece of leather. The one in the picture was never intended to be used, just to work out a usable pattern. People who can't take constructive criticism will never learn anything new. After having the phone for awhile, I think I might try a different design anyway. But I am going to work on this sort of seam a bit and try to improve, just so I can say I understand what I'm doing with it. I really do appreciate the information that's been passed on to me. Since I made a wood form for this, that should help with whatever I finally come up with.

Just wanted to say "Thanks" to Chuck Burrows for spending some quality time to help me find my way. Not only one of the most talented guys I know, but also one of the nicest.

This scam hit another message board (knifemakers) about 2 years ago. It was run overseas and a couple of people lost money on it before they understood it was a scam. Like all con artist, they prey on your greed - a quick sale, usually for something expensive, maybe even a bunch of items at once (like 10 knives). They act like they're actually putting the money in your hand. If it seems to good to be true, it probably is. An alternative is to say that they'll send a check for more than the amount of the items and you can just send the change after shipping costs. They end up with the merchandise and some of your cash; you wind up with nothing. Just to make this scam 'special', rumor has it that it's in the Al Qaida handbook as a means of raising cash.

TexasJack replied to Drac's topic in All About Us and Off Topic
I tried to come up with some comforting words, but there's just no way to put lipstick on that mess and make it look any better. Truly sucks - time to look for a serious change. A few years back, I was going through an incredibly rough period. I happened to run into an old neighbor of mine and her boyfriend on a bus. We got to talking and she started asking about various things: "..How's your wife?" "Divorced." Etc, etc. All bad news. Finally, she remembered my dog and asked about her. "She died," I replied. Her boyfriend suddenly spoke up, "The dog died, too!? Man, you should head for Nashville and start writing country songs." I don't know why that struck me as funny, but I swear I laughed about that through about the next 200 bad things that happened to me. Don't know what else to tell you. Hope things get better - and soon. Meanwhile, don't waste plane fare on Vegas. Your luck ain't runnin' that way at the moment. -
people who think they know everything!
TexasJack replied to leatheroo's topic in Leatherwork Conversation
There was a Far Side cartoon with a kid holding up his hand with the caption reading, "Sorry, teacher, but my head is full." I've met any number of people like that who at some odd point in their lives just refuse to learn any more. What's really amazing is that if you look at the people you REALLY admire (on LW.net, for example) they are always trying to learn and improve.
