Now that I think on it, I guess it's never too late to take that lacing apart and do a mo betta one like that double loop, at least. I hear we're in for a long cold snowy winter....maybe then.
-
Agreed, I started out doing a double loop and found myself fighting it too much...I should have cut the pieces a smidgin over-sized...one of the lessons learned. The poor guitar took a beating at the binding edges I'm afraid. :-(
-
I'm gonna take a beating for this one, ....but I can take it :-) I know I suck at carving so we don't have to go there, and there are other things I wish hadn't happened, like the sudden urge to dye the rosette, but it was meant to be a learning experience and it sure was. I'm happy to get thru this first one, and while there are a few things I'll do differently IF there's a next one, I'm still proud to hang this one on the man cave wall. If you're wondering, there's new strings on it, and while it's very much playable, the leather deadened the sound quite a bit.

I'll look forward to this......but I must say, as TwinOaks has touched on...that my whole idea was to utilize leather, and if the "stamp" lasts for just one application, it will be a success in the project I have in the planning stages.

Working With Oil Tanned Leather Question.
Rayban replied to Rayban's topic in Leatherwork Conversation
Yep, that's where I ordered it....also because you can buy by the sq. ft. so I only ordered what I thought I needed. -
Bob, point well taken on the finish...I'll do the Resoline for now.

I think I'm on the right track....I pressed an old belt buckle of mine onto a wet piece of 8oz veg tan, of course the image is inverted......I then soaked it in water a couple minutes.....set the oven at 350. I just eyeballed it to see that it was dry (only took about 10 minutes). When it was dry, it was very hard..I let it cool. I then press it onto another wet piece of scrap, and I'm pretty happy with the results. Looks like it can be re-used over and over. I used a one-ton arbor press to do the pressing.
-
That's helpful Bob, thanks. I have an experiment in progress..got one in the oven!......to see how it's hardened. I'll post results with pix if it turns out ok. Thanks again.

It's been quite a while ago, but I remember reading about how someone made an impression in leather by using a stamp made of leather...confused yet? For instance, make an impression of something in leather....the image will of course be reversed...then heat...actually "bake", if my memory serves me..... using the leather stamp to make impression on another leather surface...follow? The leather turned very hard when baked. Anyway, there seemed to be a formula such as "bake for 1/2 hr @ 200 degrees" or something like that. Anyone recall this post, or perhaps have some experience in what I'm trying to describe? Thanks

Working With Oil Tanned Leather Question.
Rayban replied to Rayban's topic in Leatherwork Conversation
Thanks!, as a matter of fact it is Chromexel. I'll post results. -
I have a request to make a simple messenger bag and I have some oil tanned on the way for it. The supplier suggested I line the bag, as oil from the leather may seep onto the contents of it...my question is, will a fabric of some sort be adequate lining or must it be leather? I was thinking maybe some duck canvass material would do well. Comments, suggestions??

Riemer, most stamp makers will fine tune your rough sketch, send a proof to you and you can tweek it til you're satisfied. You'll have to ask the maker you have in mind if they offer this service.

Small Of The Back Holster
Rayban replied to Warpe's topic in Gun Holsters, Rifle Slings and Knife Sheathes
Nice, well built holster, but I'm curious, what makes it a " very comfortable holster. Especially while sitting down." It's still a lump of something hard pressing against your spine. -
Any Problems With Bluegunstore?
Rayban replied to RoosterShooter's topic in Gun Holsters, Rifle Slings and Knife Sheathes
"What are your thoughts?" He's done good by me for a couple years now and I don't see him as the kind of guy to give one "the run around" Work it out with him one on one...what do you plan to gain by complaining about it on a public forum? -
"lying" is a word I would not use unless I had living proof....let's just say I have my doubts. You've made a great looking holster....your stitch line is right on, your boning detail is very well done., your stitching is so-so....and your wanting a distressed look is done (really? on you "very first project" you decided on a distressed look??) like you used scraps from different parts of the cow....we do it all the time....... You want us to believe it's your "very first project"?...ok for you...I'm just not buying into it...that's all I'm saying.

Horsehide Belt Coating
Rayban replied to antipaladin's topic in Purses, Wallets, Belts and Miscellaneous Pocket Items
Resoline here.....two or three coats. -
I have the CB3500 and (9" arm) it's plenty adequate for holsters....and I also had problems with skipped stitches til I learned how to use the machine. With only 10 hours on this machine, it should be" like new" condition and $1700 is a good deal....MY Cowboy is going on 4 years old and no way would I sell it for less than that.
-
Thanks Dink....that may be the route I take.
-
Yep, I use 207 exclusively, top and btm for belts, holsters, knife sheaths, etc.....with very good results.
-
No reptiles, just horse and cow...thanks I'll give it a try.

I've been asked by an international customer to provide a form with my item that says that the leather used to make it is not from a protected animal... customs at his end is requiring it. Anybody know where such a form can be obtained?
