Yeah you were right! Good eye. I know the motor has a clutch so at least I have that will help some with speed. I'll check the pulley and see how big it is. I found a operating manual which is only a couple pages long. I also found a service manual but it's in German. I'm probably just going to print it out anyway just for the pictures.

So was it common to package this kind of motor with this kind of machine? I have no clue.... When I was at the seller's house I turned it on and ran it a bit and everything seems to be working. So now I gotta put it back together and test it out.
-
Oh yeah I'm super pumped. It's going to be a serious learning curve but I"m doing as much research as possible. Plus I have a pretty big scrap pile to practice on. I have never used a sewing machine in my life so its going to be interesting.

First, I just want to say thank you to Constabulary and Wiz for helping me out in the other thread I posted about sewing machines. I am a total noob to this but hope to learn as much as I can. I was fortunate to pick up an Adler 67 from CL for 100 bucks tonight! It came with a bunch of stuff and I'm in the process of trying to figure it out. I tested it at the guys house and it runs. It probably needs a new power cord....the one on there now is old and ratty. I also would like to clean it up as much as possible (How exactly do you go about cleaning up a sewing machine). It came with a Singer 1/3 HP 5.5 amp motor. It also came with a bunch of different presser feet. What are the basics I need to know? Do you guys have any good resources I can go and check out on how to operate this thing? Also, I am going to primarily be sewing wallets, bags, straps, and belts. What needle/thread combos will work best for that. I know I am going to have a bajillion questions but I think that's a pretty good start. Joe

First Attempt At Making A Bag. (Gusset Questions)
Hi Im Joe replied to mrtreat32's topic in How Do I Do That?
I mean the three piece look at the briefcase example in the back. The U shaped gusset look at the large shoulder bag. The thing with the U shaped gusset is making a mold to get the tab of the gusset to sit at 90*. It's a lot of work but doing it right is sometimes like that. I'm not sure how much more in depth is going to help you. She basically tells you exactly what to do. The doing it part is just difficult. -
First Attempt At Making A Bag. (Gusset Questions)
Hi Im Joe replied to mrtreat32's topic in How Do I Do That?
I would pick up the Valerie Michael book and read the section on gussets. She describes two types of gussets. Square 3 piece gussets as well as "U" shaped gussets. -
Yeah I just lucked into it. Your post about the motor on the bottom of the table is what drew my attention to the posting. I posted it and Constubulary and Wishful told me it was a good deal. For the price it's worth stretching the budget to get something legit instead of a "workaround" like the singer.

Thanks Wiz...but somehow the wife did not stab me with a rusty spoon for asking to spend 100 dollars but also LET ME ACTUALLY BUY THE CHANDLER. I'm pretty excited if you couldn't tell.
-
So I'm now the new owner of a chandler/adler 67...for 100 bucks. I have a feeling I'm going to have a lot more questions.
-
Guy said he'll do 100. Do you know how much and where I could find a walking foot?
-
My wife may kill me...but I'll try to see if she will let me. I have a line on a Singer 15-91 for 25 dollars in good working condition. She already gave me a hard time about that! We are on a tight budget....single income family. But it seems like this is worth it.

One more question for you experts. Thank you for sharing your knowledge with me! This has made my life much easier and saved me at on of time. What about this machine? http://cincinnati.craigslist.org/for/4540685811.html

Sewing Vs Stitching--Which Do You Prefer And Why
Hi Im Joe replied to leathervan's topic in Sewing Leather
That's awesome! I hope I'm in that good of shape when I'm 77. -
Thanks Cheryl! I appreciate the input. Yeah my budget is non-existent at this point so I'm going to have to try to find some type of "stand-in" before I even think about dropping the coin on a "real" machine. Wiz, man you are awesome! One of the most helpful members of this forum. I never expected this much of a response so quickly! Thank you again.

Thank you very much. I think the problem I am going to have is trying to identify what people actually have. I don't think they even really know.

Any clue about this one? http://cincinnati.craigslist.org/hsh/4553196126.html Or this one? http://cincinnati.craigslist.org/app/4550168097.html

You guys are awesome! Thanks!

Hi guys and gals, I've never used a sewing machine but I have been doing a lot of long straps and belts etc. and think it would be great to cut some time off the process by using a machine to stitch them. I found a Singer 101 on Craigslist for what seems to be a good price. Will this machine sew leather? How thick of leather? Also, the cord is missing. How hard is it to replace a cord? I"m assuming he means the power cord. Thanks! Joe http://cincinnati.craigslist.org/fuo/4529652345.html

Yeah...sometimes I have to remind myself you can't underestimate stupidity. -
Things I've Learned From Leather Working

Why the would you try the edge by running a thumb or finger down it? Don't you always go across? At least I do. -
I've found its much easier to punch straight holes with an awl if you do it into a cork board holding the article flat on your work bench instead of in the pony.
