I bought all 3 of the saddle making encyclopedias by al stohlman and I love them. a local saddle guy told me about the intructional series by dusty johnson, which comes with full size patterns. his number is 1-800-571-0021. it costs about $65.00. I hope others contribute to this post as I am looking at making my first saddle within the year and am looking for resources too.I like to educate myself first before I tackle something tho, so lets see what else is out there.(by the way, wait to buy the al stohlman encyclopedias until they are on sale. 80 bucks a piece is a chunk of change.they usually go on sale about 3 or 4 times a yr.)

I use blue painters masking tape to the back side to keep it from stretching. why the blue stuff? less adhesive, so it comes off easier. still holds good tho.I case overnight also, and tool the next day, and I make sure to use the bee natural pro carve. what happens is the solution helps to break down the cells of the leather and make them more soft and supple, hence easier to tool.yu can also leave your item to completely dry for a few days before removing the backing.good luck.

what I find ironic is that that link for alternative sites lists craigslist.org as an alternative. the ironic thing about it is that ebay bought up craigslist and soon will be imposing fees.they are in the process of it right know. I have heard from a few businesses that when you go to post an ad for labor, you are charged a listing fee. as with all things, it starts small and spreads.soon everyone will go back to listing in the newspaper agian, since there is a small section in it(usually) that you can list an item for 2-3 bucks.

Tandy has a cowboy cuff pattern pack. check it out.

yes, that does help. I appreciate it. got a spool of black roo from my work, so now I got to sit down an play wif it. thanks all who responded

steal your wife/mothers nylons and put the tread spool in that.use a garbage bag twist tie to hold it closed at the top, but open enough that the thread can still be spooled out. not pretty, but functional.

got the paperback copy. I like the look, and the improved grip that it adds to the tool. if I can figure it out, I am going to do the handle on my head knife, and all of my bevelers and saddlers groover.

ok so a week or 2 ago, someone posted a pic of some lacing they did on some of thier tools. I was wanting to figure out how to go about it, and even went as far as buying the "leather braiding- bruce grant" book. unfortunately it doesnt go into depth on how to braid contoured shapes. I'd like to start out braiding my #3 keen edge beveler. any tips, or maybe the person that did the braiding could do a walkthrough? any help please, would be great.

I have a leather splitter for sale.I want 75.00 for it. has some rust, but a good shot of oil and a new blade, or having the blade sharpened would work wonders. it works ok the way it is, but I would reccommend having it sharpened for sure. <br> looks like the one pictured. splitter.bmp splitter.bmp
