Another Handbag/purse
rdb replied to Beaverslayer's topic in Purses, Wallets, Belts and Miscellaneous Pocket Items
I like the direction these bags are taking. Once you have the line complete they will stand out from the crowd. Good work. -
Thanks, that what I needed to know. There's a buncha CA. cops will buy them, I'm sure, not just for the memories, either.

Did you buy the patents and such for the holsters, or just the equipment? I've got a few of the old holsters, and have been trying to duplicate them in my off time for yah yahs. I just wonder if the patents are long gone, or if the family still retains them. PS: I'm jealous, even with the problems of moving the stuff.

New Marketplace For Leatherworkers To Sell Their Products! 4 Months Free!
rdb replied to craftstack's topic in Old/Sold
I just checked the site again. Https on home page. That's not necessary, except in the shopping cart. Page loaded fairly well, but the computer was grinding trying to load everything. Looked at the source code, and it seems there's a lot of java script loading, probably the reason for people getting the slow loads, switch to html5. Search box finally worked for me. Overall impression is that it's better, but not a modern interpretation of an international website geared to high sales volume. Hey, but any option for people to makes sales in these times is good, and I wish you luck in developing and growing.- 15 replies

Personally, I use screw top jars, like pickle, and B&M beans, with welding brushes from the hardware store. I punch a hole in the lid a tad smaller than the brush handle, then stick the brush in it. It stays wedged there, with the bristles in the glue. I buy a gallon of the glue, pour it into the jars as needed. Keeps everything fresh, and handy.

First, call Steve. I'm going to assume, though. My guess, it's a timing adjustment. Break out the manual, and the Allen wrench. Learn how to do the adjustment yourself. After eliminating the things Art says above, more than likely it will be timing.

Went to his site (The link is on my other computer...google estaban gonzalez with the word leather). He has many free patterns to download. There are some for purchase also. And services to develop patterns for your own. However the sign up form doesn't work for me. Once you put in USA, the state box doesn't show, and won't let me finish the registering. So....if your offer is still available, please send me the patterns too! sales@rockyriverleather.com

Is This A Leather Working Tool? $5 At Auction
rdb replied to Tallbald's topic in Leatherwork Conversation
Looks like a scallop tool for straight edges. Grab it. -
I haven't the need for brand name leathers. I don't make $5,000 saddles, so I can work around a scar or two. That being said, I've never been unhappy with Tim and the crowd at Zack White Leather. His Domestic sides are beautiful. The imported is less expensive, but entirely good to work with.

rdb replied to Matt Alsaker's topic in Gun Holsters, Rifle Slings and Knife Sheathes
It's just gas line. Available from Lowe's and Home Depot, to Napa, and Advanced auto. The stuff you bought might be something else, or for a different use. -
beautiful, well done!

"use Wax Instead Of Acrylic Sealer"
rdb replied to particle's topic in Gun Holsters, Rifle Slings and Knife Sheathes
There is an old method, using a mixture of melted mink, neats, and beeswax. Dunk or brush on. Then heat in an oven. I used to use it in the 70s. It really hardened up after heating. Worked really well on knife sheaths. There is a learning curve to the mixture, and application. Too much of a good thing, sort of. -
Jellinge Style Belt
rdb replied to Aulus's topic in Purses, Wallets, Belts and Miscellaneous Pocket Items
Looks good aulus. Most people don't know the Irish Celtic carvings with all there intertwinings were actually originating from the Viking conquests there. -
Thanks all y'all for the compliments. Customer called me today, and said the boss liked her new bag. Shhh, don't point out the mistooks...lol

I think you are right to concentrate on construction first. Tools can add up real quick, and then you find that you want to make things that don't require them. $200 worth of sheridan style carving tools are no help when you want to make a non-western style pocketbook. If you lean more towards the non-western style, then hand sewing can become tedious, not to mention the length of time to learn to do it right, so you'll quickly need a machine. Coach and other high end companies charge thousands for their hand sewn bags, but they have the market, the most of us little people don't. I think after reading all the books, and spending a great deal of time reading everything on this forum, you'll be better able to decide on your first project. Whether it's a coaster for your living room table, or a tote bag, you'll be able to think it through, and buy the specific tools you will need. With every project you tackle, you can decide on the next tool, piece of leather, etc. Good luck, and don't forget to show us your projects as you complete them.

Thanks, Luke, and Jazznow. Luke, welting is easy if you remember to sandwich it in before you sew....lol

This is the first one I made, so there's quite a few things I might change, but overall it's a decent bag. The customer wanted longer handles, so the wife could shoulder carry it, but to me, they're a bit long for the size of the bag...whatever Lola wants.... There's a helluva lot of engineering in bags, so to just whip one out like this was a bit difficult, but the next ones will go easier, and probably look somewhat different. It's a pull up leather from Zack White's.

My Take On A Scandinavian Style Sheath
rdb replied to Jordan's topic in Gun Holsters, Rifle Slings and Knife Sheathes
Glad to see you're still kicking around Jordan. If you can't get the picture posted, at least give us the facebook page so we can see it. -
Welcome, Eddy. That's the trouble with this place, there's just too much to learn from everyone. Just dive in. The water's blue and clear, and very few sharks.

Aubrey: Sorry, no. One of a kind type custom job templates tend to disappear quick around here. I'm a messy kind of guy...lol Chancey: Good suggestions. I once had a friend from Finland, named Ugo, who I met in my travels. Always had an affinity for the place.

I have signed many NDs in my time, but I always tell the people first that, before you go about hiring an attorney to develop one, at least give me a glimmer of what you are hoping for. I've seen many a product over the years, and your new idea may very well have been done before. I have had customers really believe they have something new, and within seconds I have sent them photos of something either similar, or exact. The non-disclosure is a perfectly legitimate way of doing business, but there's a few of us that still believe a person's word is his bond.

Wow I Just Tallyed Up My Reciepts
rdb replied to Guy W's topic in Gun Holsters, Rifle Slings and Knife Sheathes
At least she hasn't said, "Either that stuff on the kitchen table goes, or I do!" Stick with it, and pay attention here on the Forum. Everything will work out. -
Weldwood Issues
rdb replied to toasty1435's topic in Dyes, Antiques, Stains, Glues, Waxes, Finishes and Conditioners.
Same thing happening here for me too. I think they changed the formula, even the "original" It's become too "touchy". There's a certain amount of glue to use, and a certain exact time to allow for drying. I'm gonna switch.
