Nice lookin' strap, Marlon! I always liked Black with White stitching. I guess it's a leftover from watching Hoppy...lol

Let me tell you what a beautiful job you've done!. And thank you for the update, and a look at the day. I wish there were a million of these things going on around the country.

A bench is a very personal thing. Some want rugged, never move. Some want small to fit their space. Others have a perfect environment and build several benches for particular use. Skill level in building varies from pick up a book at Home Depot to master craftsman intricate styles. The length of the table is most important to me. I do lots of belts, and I want the length to lay them out flat. Some people only do smaller pieces like wallets, and need only a few square feet. I have the skills to make a fine piece of furniture, but never the inclination. I use a 6' folding buffet/office table, but the key was to go to my local counter top installer, and received permission to pick through their junk pile. I found a 6' by 2' piece of stone, 1.25in thick, that I use on top of the folding table. It is rock solid now for everything but 5lb maul slammin'. I do everything from stamping to punching belt tips on it, not a movement. I would suggest reading all you can here, and especially heed all the good advice the others have given you, but remember, this is for you, and if you are like all the rest of us, you don't know what's best for you. My advice is to set up the space first, even using odd stuff to fill it. As you work, you will see what exactly you need. The best plans are often the developing ones, not the perfectionist route.

Awhile back we had a good tensioning topic: http://leatherworker.net/forum/index.php?s...ic=1820&hl= 99% of my problems went away after watching the Artisan video, especially the part about threading the machine. Go on their site for the video. I think it's on this Forum too, in a topic. Do a search there too. It's a good intro video.

WOOHOO!!!!!! Having them all back is freakin great! I'ld double all your paychecks, but that still adds up to zero, I'm afraid. I think this calls for an New Enrollment period for new Subscribers. This amount of knowledge all in one place for free!!!! Send a few farthings, and some sheckels to help your LW keep this up. Imagine if you had to buy all this information from Leathercraft supplier's patterns and books. How many of you have learned something here? What would it cost to have bought a whole book to only use one chapters information? I for one don't want this Forum to EVER disappear. The crash was scary to those of us who were here. Time to show a little support.

New Holster - Askins Avenger Style
rdb replied to ArcherBen's topic in Gun Holsters, Rifle Slings and Knife Sheathes
Being a skinny guy, I had the same problem with that style, until I switched to a pancake style, so I'm gonna agree. Nice job on that one. I kinda like the "two tone" look. THe stitches are nice and tight to the weapon. Not sure that belt is stiff enough though...lol -
This is one of my pet peeves... We have diaper changing shelves now in all the bathrooms...super duper, strong, and expensive. But I don't have babies no more. ALL I want is a clothes hanger, and a small shelf in the cubbies to place my pistol, or wallet, etc. on. There's more people who have to carry things around with them, and I'm not about to put a briefcase or anything else on those floors!

If it ain't LW, and it ain't other places except at home, then the possibility is that your DNS (Domain Name Service) hasn't refreshed properly. 404 indicates it can't find the page. DNS Servers often need to be rebooted, or attended to, sometimes they are slow to do so. I use Open DNS ( http://www.opendns.com ) It's a reliable service that is not tied to your ISP. You just plug the new numbers into your router, or PC, and enjoy a dedicated service that is attended to, instead of neglected. A test to see if it is your DNS, would be to open a command prompt window, (type "cmd" in your xp Run box or Vista Search box) and type: ipconfig /flushdns then type: ipconfig /registerdns Without getting too technical, it will erase and rebuild your dns cache. If the ISP has rebooted or somesuch since you last logged on, it will refresh your cache with current page knowledge. If that doesn't work, try the OpenDNS service. If it finds the page, than that was the problem. But what the hell do I know....

My latest favorite is Dropbox. Drag and drop to your public shared folder, with a link, and you are instantly sharing. Syncing, gallery, 2GB, free account. People you send links to, do not have to have an account. http://www.getdropbox.com/

Full time leather worker (actually, more than that, mostly seven days a week...lol) Not making enough to rent a refrigerator box on a heating grate, but it's the only thing that ever made me feel happy while doing it. I'm too old to go back to being unhappy.

It is much harder to sell a house with tenants. Sometimes it's very hard to get rid of them, even when they owe rent monies. If you do rent out, try and find someone that will do work for rent reduction. You wont make as much money, but tenants who will do this take better care of the property. A months rent in advance plus a month security deposit plus a lease (say six months) is standard, and filters out a lot of trouble. I'm sure there will be more advice to follow. Good luck whatever your choices.

I've got some Chestnut bridle leather from Waterhouse. They were beautiful pieces. Peter actually saved my butt with his extra service.... I don't know about the garment leathers though

I notified them...we'll see if there is a response.

I'm glad you got the cash back...too bad the customer was left to hang. I guess, in the back of my mind, I'll have your experience to draw on, when I think of Hide House. Unfortunately, this seems to be occurring with several supply houses. Whether it's the economy, or just foolishness, I'm starting to get PO'd. One thing I make sure, when I contact a supplier, is to mention this Forum. You would be surprised to see how few actually know we exist...even when some of their best customers post here. This Forum is an Historic part of Modern LeatherWork, it's influence yet to be understood, but it will be, I'm sure. A few suppliers, and toolmakers understand, but not enough. There are no real Unions for us, but as a group, were we to stick together, and promote our little "group", it can only help us. Maybe some suppliers will upgrade their service. They want our money, we should get a little something back.

Thanx Brad. I hope you are right. I think I will make up a few, and see. Do any of you know the right approach to sanding laminated stuff, like handles on knives, hammers, etc.? I've seen some tutorials awhile back, but can't remember where I saw them...probably right here....lol. Where's that search box..hmmm. I'll have to break down and buy one of those sanding setups, with the belt and disc combos, and an assortment of paper. The local store don't sell the 600-1200 grit, but I would think that would be necessary.

My first holster
rdb replied to bruce johnson's topic in Gun Holsters, Rifle Slings and Knife Sheathes
That's pretty sleek looking Bruce! You done good. I'm no holster expert, but those pre- mold stitch lines are hard to get right at first. I've usually stitched first, then cut the belt slots. I think next time, I will cut the slots first. That way I can guage the stitch line better. I don't know if that's the right way, but I'm going to try it. -
I used to make these in the 70s. People liked them then, dunno about now. This one is 3x6", six layers high. Fun little project. I don't have any good sanding equipment, so the edges aren't perfectly smooth, but that adds to them sometimes, I guess....lol Quite simple to make, but a little more time consuming than you think. I stacked 3x6 pieces. I used my old keyfob cutter to make the cutout. You can make the cutout any shape of course. Stack higher, etc for different sizes. This one is just leather balmed, Hi-lite, and snowproofed.

Ian, You're about a good a business man as I am...lol. We charge too little, we trust too many people, and we always worry about whether or not the things we made are good enough to charge the full amount. I hardly ever take a down payment on things less than hundred, minimal amounts on more than that. For the most part, everything works out, but occasionally the same thing happens to me. I beat myself up, swear a blue streak that reaches the end of the cosmos, settle down, have a beer, then go right back to doing the same thing...sheesh. But guess what, the "sucker" reputation doesn't stick. "Gee, He's a good guy.", does. And the good customers more than make up for the bad. With your talent, they should be beating down the doors to give you all their money. Just make sure you get enough money from them to replace that door...lol

Time for another Pay It Forward?
rdb replied to TwinOaks's topic in Special Events, Contests and Classes
I can ship international also, too (USPS). -
My Daughter was visiting for Turkey Day, and since her hobby is photography, she took some in my shop. I'm including the one she sent me. I use it for wallpaper on the PC now. Actual pictures of my environment, including what is really going, instead of what my skilled daughter manage to create, are on the second page of this thread. I have actually cleaned up since those, but then I got messy again...lol
