  1. A big concern of mine are the health issues connected to hydraulic oil. A Google search reveals that there are many additives in hydraulic oil, some of them cancerous, which tells me that I should avoid it , if there are other choices. I called a sewing machine company today, and they suggested CRC Power Lube ( with PTFE) . What do you think of that lubricant ? / Knut
  2. OK Art, it sounds like you know what you are talking about, so I´ll buy your advice ! Are all hydraulic oils of mineral type and suited for oiling a sewing machine?
  3. To me it sounds a bit strange to use hydraulic oil instead of an oil that is supposed to be used as a lubricant , for example WD-40.
  4. Could you please share the secret of making stainless steel into gold ? / Knut
  5. Do you think WD 40 would do?
  6. I went to the hardware store and bought a 3 meter length of aluminum angle profile 40x40 mm. Light and straight. / Knut
  7. Dry rot is what occurs if nothing is done to leather to preserve it. The oils in the leather fibers have dried/evaporated to such a point that oxidation has begun to effect the fiber bundles. As time goes on, oxidation continues, the leather often lightens in color, looses strength (and maybe surface finish), then evidences obvious powdering. This process is called "dry rot" and has nothing to do with fungus or bacteria. If untreated, all leather will dry rot. No matter how you oil dry rot leather, it is beyond rescue. Tell the owner that he shouldn´t ride it for his own safety! My two cents worth / Knut

  11. hei Tor ! / Knut
  12. Made the flat bed attachment today, mission completed ! / Knut
  13. The top is made of three layers, two layers of 18 mm pineboards, glued to a four mm plywood in between, which makes a total of 40 mm, same as the original top. The pine boards are glued with the fibers at 90 degrees angle, which makes a stiff table top. The top is finished with a satin polyurethane lacquer. Next project, starting today, is a flat bed attachment. When I get the harness makers feet, I´ll have my dream machine, (even if it is an Adler)
  14. I finished the table top today and made the assembly. The machine is running again and I´m happy with the result! / Knut (At least it is a bit better than the stand that was on the machine when I bought it ! )
  15. mange takk! ;-) I´ll have the table top ready next week, a couple of holes to locate and drill, and then we´ll see if I´ll get the whole thing together - and working.

  17. I recently bought a used Adler 205-374 with a needle positioning system and a motor that can run the machine very slow. The machine stand was a pile of junk so I had to do something about it. I bought eight meters of 40x40x2 mm square tubing, cut it to pieces and welded it into a new machine stand of my own design. The pedals from the old stand are used. Tomorrow I´ll start making the table top from 2" pine boards. Next week I hope I´ll have my Dream Machine running on a new stand, and harness makers presser feet from Weaver are on their way across the Atlantic. A real upgrade from an old Singer 45K ( AD 1919) and a Tippmann Boss with bad morning temper ! / Knut

  20. I have modified my old cast iron Boss by adding a spring that keeps tension on the top thread ( from a new model Boss, AR-49 is the part #) . The spring puts tension upwards on the take up arm and takes out all slack during the whole sewing cycle. There was a slack on the top thread that created a loop just above the needle foot and that caused skipped stitches. The spring is cheap and was easy to install .
  21. Are presser feet and other accessories interchangeable between the different clones of the Juki 441: Artisan Toro 4000, Cobra class 4, Cowboy CB 4500, Tecsew 180-2 ........? / Knut

  24. An ULU has a different handle ( parallell with the blade) and a pointed blade which is sharpened on one side. This is definitely not an ulu. My vote is for a kitchen tool. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ulu
