Ginny. I have been comparing my Adler 30-1 with your movie, and I can definitely say that the problem with your machine is timing. The shuttle hook on mine passes the needle when it is it´s almost lowest position. Så you have to move the shuttle carrier one step ( or more)counter clockwise. I think that will solve your problem. Rotate the wheel clockwise !!!!

That´s the only way to correct the timing, and you can´t adjust the needle bar lift, so just advance the shuttle carrier one tooth. The adjust the needle sideways so it almost touches the shuttle hook, sew and see what happens. Have faith, Ginny! It is a bit hard to see on the video. If the timing is correct the shuttlehook should pass the needle when the eye of the needle is below the hook, or it won´t grip the loop. If not, you must loosen the shuttle and reposition it on the gear rack. Think first, relocate then! And make sure the needle is of correct length! Hope this will help. / knut Watched the needle pic. Wizcrafts, It depends on where the handwheel is located: If the handwheel is mounted on the shaft located on the front of the machine it should turn clockwise, and if it is mounted on the mainshaft ( on the right side of the machine) it should turn counter clockwise. There are options, so Tony was right! ( I´ll bet at least 20 cents , maybe 30, that the problem with this machine is the needle, wrong needle system ! Many patchers have passed through my shop and the main problem has been needles that were from the wrong needle system. ) A 332 LL needle measured from the top to the eye shall be 38,9mm = 1,53 inches / Knut

One last try: Do you have the right needle in your machine? In my Adler 30-1 I use either 332 LL or Singer 29x3 needle system.

I agree with Sewmun, the eye of the needle is pointing towards you, and you need to twist the needle a quarter of a turn to make the machine sew. The groove on the needle should be to the left and the eye pointing from left to right. The machine will sew within seconds and you´ll smile! / Knut

I have an old cast iron Boss, and I have installed a spring to get tension on the take up arm during the whole sewing cycle. The spring has # AR-49 in their new model Boss, and can be ordered from Tppmann. I drilled and tapped a 3 mm hole in the take up arm, installed a screw for the spring, cut off a piece of the existing spring to make room for the new spring. Have a look at the Tippmann website where you can find pics of the interior of your machine and you´ll see what I mean. The spring was an improvement ! / Knut

I use the same thread in my machines as when handsewing, and I have never seen any sign of unraveling. I use Barbours bonded nylon plus a sticky wax - no problem. I think the problem might occur when using linen thread which is poorly waxed, but I have never been up to it - so far.

I have used polyester-cotton blend thread long ago, but I have found that the cotton wears fast and isn´t very suitable in the long run used in saddlery and tack. I have got rid of my all supply of poly/cotton blend thread . Now I use Barbours bonded nylon both for hand sewing and in my machines, as it gives a strong , durable stitch and it runs smootly in the machines, and without fraying like the poly-cotton thread. For handstitching I use the same nylon machine thread waxed with a rosin/ beeswax/mutton tallow mixture, a sticky wax that really sticks to the thread. 2 x rosin, 1 x beeswax, 1 x mutton tallow ( all by weight) is the recepie. / Knut

I got this recepie from a master shoemaker, you might give it a try . The result a sticky wax that I use on all kinds of thread, linen, nylon and polyester. I melted and mixed all and then poured it into a thin plastic cup placed in cold water. When it had cooled off and settled I ripped the cup off. If it is too sticky for your taste, add some more bees wax. If you wax nylon and poly threads with pure bees wax it will come off the first stitch, but this mix will stick. Be careful when melting the mix, it is HOT ! 2 parts ( by weight) rosin 1 part ( -"- ) bees wax 1 part ( -"- ) sheep tallow Neats foot oil can be a substitute for sheep tallow, but I haven´t tried that so I don´t know the proportions / Knut

May years ago I suffered from a slipped disc in my back, and backtracking the problem led to a bench that was too low. I made a new bench and a new cutting table that were high enough to enabling me to work standing straight. I found out that the bench must be a bit above my belt buckle. When determining the height of my new benches I put a pile of books on my kitchen table til I found a suitable height. The only work I do sitting in my shop is sewing and stamping. Also I put a thick soft carpet in front of my bench which makes life more comfortable. / Knut

Try to find Polycarbonate plastic. It is sold in Sweden under the name LEXAN, don´t know what it is named abroad. The polycarbonate is flexible, yet almost indestructable and is found in many thicknesses. I have seen it tested ( 2" thick) as a bullet proof window, without cracking. I think Plexiglass is too brittle to be practical. in a bag

It seems that mochila saddles have become fashion in Sweden! A row of Scandinavian mountainmen knocking on my door, asking for saddles ! Oldtimer

And my guess is that the saddle is oiled with Neatsfoot Compound Oil, which is a 90% petroleum oil product.
