1850's To 1890 Saddles. Anyone Like Them Other Than Me?
oldtimer replied to DEADEYE's topic in Saddle & Tack Maker Gallery
Another one I built about 10 years ago for my own use ( the second saddle I ever made, and the first half seat), after watching a pic in the book "COWBOYS & the trappings of the old west." The pic of that Collins saddle haunted me, so I had to do something about it to get a good nights sleep! The pic shows yours truly and my horse "mr Gus" a Swedish coldblood trotter, saddled with the "haunt". Leather from Tärnsjö Tannery, tree from ??? / Knut aka Old Timer -
1850's To 1890 Saddles. Anyone Like Them Other Than Me?

Here is another one I built for my own use 5-6 years ago after selling my Collins reproduction. I had some pieces of black harness leather and a saddle tree lying around in the shop, so I made me a new saddle for a mountain trailride . The rigging is a " very modyfied Sam Stagg rigging" with integral front jockeys. White rawhide trim on the horn and cantle, sewn with an invisible seam, front and back. / Knut -
1850's To 1890 Saddles. Anyone Like Them Other Than Me?

I have oiled the saddle twice( pure Neatsfoot oil), then put a lanoline based dressing ( grease) on top, to keep the oil in and the water out + a bit of sunshine between the clouds. No antiquing needed as the leather got a nice burnish from the tool impressions. The leather is 10/11 oz leather from Tärnsjö tannery , Sweden. http://tarnsjogarveri.se/ / Knut -
The tool is a circular welt cutter. ( Dictionary of leatherworking tools, by R.A Salaman) / Knut

Hello Johanna. We have a winter festival in my town this week. On wednesday we´ll congratulate the Swedish Olympic cross country skiers for ther efforts in Vancouver. All skiers in the olympic team, except for one, come from my town, and they have earned a bunch of Gold, silver and Bronze medals. So there will be a huge reception wednesday night in town, a blast! Also every night there is a light show projected on the walls of the City Hall, a huge building. It is amazing what computers and light projectors can do! Look for yourself! http://svtplay.se/v/...let_pa_radhuset / Knut Name: Knut Karlsson UserName: oldtimer IP Address: 217.209.25.107 Email Address: old-timer@telia.com

Hi. When I took a closer look it was not a twin, but I suspect my machine to be a W. Pedersen from Denmark. The Stockholm based company imported many of Pedersens machines under their own label. Here is a pic of my splitter. The adjustment handle is broken and I have sent it to be welded, but it is similar to yours, with a wing nut lock. Sorry, no manual. / Knut

I have a twin to your machine, the nameplate has a company name from Stockholm, but It seems that my machine comes from the same manufacturer as yours . / Knut

Leather Things You Put In Your Pocket Or Carry With You.
oldtimer replied to UKRay's topic in Leatherwork Conversation
(Looking into a womans purse is like getting a glimpse of hell !) A pocket or purse should contain a Jack Sap ( or a Violence pouch, according to my daughter). It gives an attacker something different to think of ! / Knut -

Years ago I found an old Blanchard roundknife in a flea market, and got it cheap. It was heavily pitted by rust, had a severe crack in the blade and the brass ferrule was beaten by a hammer and the handle had cracks, a piece of junk. The other day I got an idea of trying to make something out of it so I tapped off the handle. Then I made a poster board template of a head knife that would clear the crack and then I cut out the "new" blade. The rust was cured in a bath of mild citric acid and after a great deal of polishing the blade started to look like a Blanchard leather knife again. I had plans to make a new handle from moose antler but I had to cancel that idea. Instead I used the old handle, glued the cracks and cut off the part inside the ferrule as it was badly damaged by the hammer blows on the ferrule. After some drilling and fitting the handle was epoxied back on the blade. What´s left to do now is grinding a new edge , but that is another story. The length of the handle is custom fitted to my hand and it is nice to hold. /Knut

Rosin is the hard and brittle substance you get when destilling turpentine out of raw pine pitch. So I don´t think it is a very good idea to try making hand sewing wax out of raw pine pitch as it will probably wind up in a mess , and if you get it on your hands you´ll be like Spiderman. So my advice is : Don´t do it ! / Knut

Ed, by quriosity I googled Schärf-fix and it seems that the machine is made in Sweden, so I´d suggest you E-mail the factory and ask your questions. www.teknomek.se/int/scharf-fix.html / Knut ( my name turned green !!??) :-)

I´m quoting "The leathercrafters Bible" by John C. Simonds : " Johnny, let me give you a piece of advice ! Take the needles out of that awl and put them on a shelf somewhere in case you ever find use of them ! Pull the thread off the spool. then step out the back door there and throw that awl as far as you can. When you come back I´ll show you how to stitch leather"

My advice will be buying a stitching awl, a round awl, thread and a piece of bees wax and saddlers needles, and start sewing with two needles and a thread. I´m quoting "The leathercrafters Bible" by John C. Simonds : " Johnny, let me give you a piece of advice ! Take the needles out of that awl and put them on a shelf somewhere in case you ever find use of them !
