  1. Help!!!! I ran into a problem with my Adler 205-374 today, and it won´t make stitches as it is out of timing. Is this corrected by adjusting the height of the needlebar ? / Knut
  2. Women ! Same old story ! LOL / Knut
  3. You can taper Nylon / polyester thread like you do with a linen thread. When I handsew with nylon thread ( bonded), I wax the thread with a sticky wax I blended myself, yellow pine pitch, bees wax and mutton tallow, as bees wax rubs off the thread in the first couple of holes. The sticky wax locks the stitches very well. / Knut
  4. Thank you guys, for all your inputs. I´ll try both the dry and the oil method and see what´s best for me. / Knut
  5. Awsome machine ! If I had one I´d keep it in my living room! / knut
  6. Most people don´t ! Knut
  7. I also have had enough of heavy saddles for my personal use, so I´ll stick to light weight saddles. I like the tooling on the corner pieces of the mochila, just enough for the period ! In the old days they put ornamented lead weights on the mochila corners to keep them from curling Do you have a pic of the rigging ? / Knut
  8. When using Fiebings Oil dye, should I oil the leather before applying the dye, or not ? I´d like to know the proper way to use it ! / Knut
  9. The difference between an old cast iron Boss and the aluminum frame Boss is that the iron Boss moving parts are made of steel and in the new model they are made of zink castings. I have had two aluminum Boss machines and both broke down after a while, the first one was defective out of the box, so had to order parts from the US to get them running so I could sell the crap. Then I found a used cast iron Boss in California, and it has done a great job for years without any problem. That is a difference ! Also I have read about Tippmans excellent customer service here on LW, but my expeience is that it does not reach outside the US . They didn´t even respond my emails! I have replaced my Boss with an Adler 205-374 with a needle positioning system - the real dream Machine ! So my advice is, save some more money and buy a "real" sewing machine from a dealer with a good reputation and custromer service. My 2 cents ... / Knut
  10. Great work , Timbo ! Now you have a comfortable saddle for the trail and without any unnecessary weight to carry around. I am very fond of those old timey mountainman saddles, built o couple myself and very soon I´ll make me one based on a Pony Express tree, but without a mochila. From the shape of the horn and the over all style, I think your saddle is a reproduction of the "Ashley contract saddle". I have seen a couple of those on mountainman web sites. You can read more on mountainman saddles in the UMO Cayuse handbook ( Upper Missouri outfit ) if you are interested. I built a mochila saddle a couple of years back andd you can find pics of it here on the LW. Search for "Mochila". / Knut (a Scandinavian mountain man by heart)
  11. Don´t hesitate to buy an Adler ! I found a used 205-374 with a needle positioning system and I wouldn´t trade it for any leather sewing machine, original or clone. It is the original "dream machine" ! / Knut

  15. The American "cousins" of those Circassian and Mongolian and Chinese saddles are the Ringgold Dragoon saddles ( 1844) and the Grimsley Dragoon saddles ( 1847), very similar in shape. / Knut
  16. You could put in screws on the edge of the cantle to form a kind of "reebars" for the bondo. That would keep the bondo from gcoming loose. I did that on a Ralide tree many years ago and it is still tight.
  17. I´ll make a second attempt : The general shape of the saddle looks very similar to this Hungarian saddle. http://www.folkline.hu/kiadvanyok/hh_03/hungarian_saddle.html / Knut
