  1. Thanks Buck. I'll go from there. I'm also a little "cheap" on the pricing.
  2. I have a couple sets of kangaroo reins and romel to repair and need a little advise. The part that attaches the bit to the reins, not sure what the technical name is, needs replaced. I have to make four of these. Not sure what the goig rate is for something like this. Any help in pricing would be appreciated.
  3. I personally have not used any of this rawhide yet. I have four 18 inch disks on the way to use in a lace cutting workshop in Sheridan, Wy. on the 14th of May. A friend has used some and I remember that he likes it.
  4. Me too. Stern Tanning in Wisconsin is the only rawhide producer I know of but you have to cut the lace yourself.
  5. I have an older one of these and just love it. These things are easy to adjust and will last forever.
  6. I'm not sure I really understand what is going on here so let me recap my thoughts. The original question was about the best coverage for the Mexican Round Braid. My thought, imho, is that the slits are going to get you better coverage because the lace is flat and will fit better. Kind of like the square peg in the round hole. the flat lace will look better in the slits than in the round holes. It will also not scuff if the slits are opened up a little. As far as the strength of slits vs round holes, I'm not sure there is any difference.
  7. Mary Fields taught me to take the hide off the cow and just throw it out on the ground, flesh side up. Give it enough time to start to firm up and then cut it into a strap. I wonder if the salt helps to pull some moisture out and speeds up the process a little? One day I may have to try it when I get a good supply of rawhide built up. Would probably work better on a slaughtered hide than an old starving cow.
  8. Thanks for that information, Buck. I have always wondered about the air thing. I might have to try it one day.
  9. Bluesman, not sure about the answer to your question. If you can't determine that by the book, call the Journal and ask Brian. He is in charge and will know.
  10. Great to hear, Buck. I've been thinking about calling you but when I consider it, I get busy and can't. Are you going to make it to Sheridan?
  11. That is very nice. I like the Jade roo. Works great.
  12. I glue the gusset to the leather then stitch. That way you do not have to hold it in place as you stitch.
  13. It's time to start thinking about the show in Sheridan, WY again. I always have a great time there. This year I will be teaching workshops on cutting and beveling both rawhide and leather lace. Intermediate braiding, in which we will be doing a 7 part 6 bight turks head, that same turks head with the interweave and a Spanish ring knot. I will also be doing some personal training on Friday and Saturday. The lace cutting class will also have Nick Carter helping teach and in both my classes, Brian Kidd, aka Knot Head, will be a guest teacher. I talked Brian into coming out to the show. If anyone is interested in any of the workshops contact Leather Crafters and Saddlers Journal at www.leathercraftersjournal.com or 1-888-289-6409.
  14. Very nice. Leather is easier than rawhide but feel free to ask question.
  15. Check out Jeff Stern, of Stern Tanning in Wisconsin. Phone is 414-578-8615. I hear he is making some 18 inch circles and selling them.
  16. You can do either an over 1 under 1 or over 2 under 2 for a 10 or 12 flat braid. I think you can probably find how to start them on You Tube. If not, check books by Ron Edwards, Bruce Grant, R M Williams and David Morgan. If you need more info, just ask.
  17. Can someone give me the phone number for the Phillips that makes the maker stamps? Can't seem to find it.

    Vinegaroon

Would someone plese post the process of making and using vinegaroon? How do you make it, do you diluye it with water before using, how long do you soak the rawhide and anything else I forgot to ask. Appreciate the help.
  23. In the Bruce Grant book, would that be Mary Fields who is shown making the reata? If so, she was my rawhide teacher and I have a splitter like the one shown that she is using. If interested, I can try to make up a set of plans and post them here.
