    Quirt

KAW, I was admiring your quirt again and was wondering what thickness are the strings that were used on the main body of the quirt, what angle are they beveled on and did you bevel all 4 corners? Thank you again for sharing. Rob

    Bosal

Thanks for the pictures KAW. Your work is definitly something that I aspire to be able to do. That nose button is very cool.
  3. Mort, Tosch made a good point, and aside from having a crap saddle, another mistake that is commonly made is putting the saddle in the wrong spot. In the picture you posted your saddle is sitting up on the shoulder. Good saddle or bad, not to many horses will tolerate that for very long. You might want to do some research on the what, why, and where a saddle should sit. Rob

    Romal reins

Nicely done, interesting knot. I was just thinking about making some of romel reins as well. Do you have any advice or suggestion as to what I might want know prior to starting on them. I currently have very little knowledge on the subject. Thank you for sharing the pics. Rob
  7. Butch, I'll share what I have and be happy for the opportunity to do so. Rob
  8. Thank you all for your comments. Art S It takes me about a week to two weeks to make them. I work on them maybe 3-4 hours every couple of days or so. Okiwen I have tried deerhide and have found it to be to thin and brittle to be able to work with for braiding very well. That was some that I had made myself there maybe a better way of making than what I had done, but I will not be using again anytime soon. From what I have heard redhide and latigo are the same thing. You can braid around just about anything you would like, I have been using rawhide cores more for the sake of tradition than for any other reason. And if you look around you can find some splitters and cutters for alot less. It doesn't need to be fancy so long as your blades are sharp and your moisture is right. Feel free to ask more if any of this is unclear. Rawhide1 The middle nosebutton was really all one big mistake. I had miscalculated the width of the string and originally did not make them wide enough to cover. Then when I turned back at the ends I wanted a herringbone look but ended up with a guacho weave instead, so I just went with it. I had enough length to turn back again and make the whole works o3,u3. the middle weave is o4,u4 I used seperate strings to make it, I couldn't figure out how to weave one string through it all. Looking forward to seeing some more of your work. Thank you all again, Rob

    hondas

Those look really good. I've been wanting to make some myself. How do you go about making the folded one? Rob
  13. Thank you everyone for the tips. I found the local landscaper that does alot of brick driveways and retaining walls. He said to come over some night with a 12 pack and he'd see what he could do. Rob

    steering wheel

I have troubles figuring out how many strands those knots are to. If I am right, and there is a good chance I'm not, 8 bight equals 16 strand and with the interweave it would raise it to 24 strands. I think.... Anyone have a better answer? Rob
  16. I am sorry to hear of your fathers passing, the poem is beutiful. Thank you for sharing. Rob Gerbitz

    Lacing needles

I saw a man at a Brannaman clinic this summer using these lacing needles when he was making a pinnaple knot. So I bought some and to try them out, I used them on a nose button I just finished up and was thinking that I sure wish someone had told me about these sooner. It seems like it cut my time threading the strings across the button down considerably. Maybe this post can help someone else out. Rob

Cool idea, I won't be showing my wife this, don't think that I want it showing up on the honey-do list. Good work! Rob
  19. A friend brought this by today, she got it from a kitchen installer, free or charge. I am thinking that I would like to set it into my work bench but would need to square it up a bit first. Anyone have any ideas on how, or what to use to cut this with. It is roughly 2.5 by 1.5 feet. Thank you Rob
  20. There is a Tandy store out in Elgin I would think that would have some classes out there and maybe even know of someone to help you with the rest of it. Rob
  21. Thanks for the tip Mike, now I have a good reason to take up tobacco again, I've been looking for one. Rob

    Bosal #6

Thanks guys! Alan, it is the same in the middle it just doesn't seem that way. Even when you are holding it.
  23. Wow Mike that's very nice head gear. What did you use to darken your strings with. Rob

    Bosal #6

Finally have had a chance to work on some braiding lately. Here is a 7/16 bosal and a shu-fly to remember an old friend with. Critiques, opinions, and comments are welcome. Thanks Rob

I haven't ever used it, but I hear that some folks get there's from Hereford By Products in either hides or precut strings.
