It's done with an airbrush. You can use various colors to get similar results but basically, you use a darker color (brown ish) on the outside and fade that out. When I do it, I just let the natural color of the leather be my lightest / inner most color. I use brown of some sort on the outside and sometimes hit the very very outside edge with black for a darker, higher contrast. If you want an amber or yellowish color in the middle, I'd hit it with full yellow first. Then do my sunburst with the browns/tans, etc on the outside.

This took a long time to complete. I did the carving and dye job on the patch piece, then hand sewed it onto the bottom piece. I then wet molded the leather onto the seat. The wet molding took way too long, especially on the nose section. I ended up having to skive that bit of leather to get it to wrap around the nose of the seat.

I can't seem to figure out what beveler tools are matching sets. For instance, the B836 is a beveler with a slight texture. What are the other tools that have that same matching texture? Is there any way for me to identify similar stamps? Hope that makes sense. Thanks.

https://www.leathercraftlibrary.com/p-1867-field-notes-cover-pattern.aspx? I made my own template using paper. I made mine for a passport so I simply used the passport and added a little extra on the edges for seam allowance and some in the middle so it can bend/fold correctly.

I use this leather in 2/3 ounce for my wallets/passport covers. http://springfieldleather.com/20623/Side%2CTooling%2C2-3oz%2CSoft/ Two square feet is more than enough. You'll need dye or oil or something to finish that leather. I use Fiebings dye. Making a template/pattern is pretty easy but this isn't a bad place to start and the price is great too. https://www.leathercraftlibrary.com/p-1867-field-notes-cover-pattern.aspx? You'll need thread/needles and some way to poke holes in your leather. I use a stitching chisel. Something like this http://springfieldleather.com/19454/Chisel%2CLacing%2C1-8%22%2C4-Prong/ I am blind so I like using 4.5mm pitch on my chisels. I use Tiger Thread that is .8mm Many people like using 3-4mm pitch and .6mm thread. Hope this helps point you in the right direction.

Is this what you're looking for? http://leatherworker.net/forum/index.php?showtopic=60241

I used 2/3 ounce for the inside and outside pieces. It's my daily wallet and besides being poorly sewn, I really like the way it functions. You should be fine with your 2 ounce bison leather.

a six slot bi-fold would work. You'd put 3 cards in each slot. Simply making this wallet a little bit taller would work. This would allow you to add another card slot. http://leatherworker.net/forum/index.php?showtopic=54776

Just sold those three wallets. Guess I'll be making more. :D

made 3 of these things. Fun to make but not really my style.

Needed a change of pace from doing some of the wallets, etc that I've been doing. Wanted to make something that was fun and 'stress free'. These are about 3" x 1.6" and dyed, not painted. Trying to get a water color type look on leather with dye is difficult. I'm open to any and all suggestions.

Purse From Game Online

Agreed, Very nice. What thickness of leather and did you use an airbrush for some of this? -
How do you hold your items when airbrushing? I find that the air from the brush is blowing my pieces all around. I'm using less than 20 PSI, if that matters.

I think my past issues I had were from using paint, not dye. I did a basic sunburst on a quick wallet then played around with some masking and did the light bulb thingy. How do y'all get the dye from the bottle into your airbrush? I think I need some eye droppers. This is fun!

I want in on this! What I think I'm reading here is, you must thin down the dye for it to absorb correctly into the leather? I've done a few airbrushed leather projects and the dye seemed to sit on top rather than sink into the leather. What is the technique to do the sunburst? I can do it with paper and paint, using my airbrush but can't get the same results on leather. Thanks!

Made Myself A New Wallet
pnj replied to FidesLeather's topic in Purses, Wallets, Belts and Miscellaneous Pocket Items
Very nice! Hand stitched? -
any thoughts or suggestions on these pieces? I used a strait edge for the strait lines of the letters in the "roast" one.

The whole reason I got into leather tooling was to make a seat. Pretty impressed with my first try. I did an antique rub on the skull and dark brown dye on the rest. Then a few coats of clear.

I posted one of these in another section because I didn't realize there was a specific section for tooling/stamping. I have super cheap tools and a tandy knife. I need to get stropping paste because the knife is very dull. I'm stuck with these tools for awhile because I can't justify spending $25.plus on just one tool. I have no interest in what I would call "traditional" or western style stamping. The subject matter is what drives me to want to pick up the tools and stamp. I have a hard time getting the teeth too look right. The knife either isn't sharp enough (It's very dull) , won't make such tight corners or I need more practice with a sharper knife. I also find the tools to be very small. Hard to hold onto and hard to see. :/ I plan to use this thread to post my latest works and hopefully see some improvement over time. Any and all suggestions are welcome.

I find that holding onto the small tools (like an A104, etc) hurts my hands. I have some hand/health issues and holding things that are small gets very painful after a short time. Is there anything I can add to the handles to increase the size? I may end up just wrapping tape or something around them. Thanks
