  1. I line my rifle slings with suede, belts I do with vegtan but very similar to how I do it. 1) First cut your strap or belt 2) Tool and finish the strap till you get to the point you want to stitch it. 3) Add any padding if you are going to do that. I add the padding the same way as the suede. Any thin leathers I use Super 77 spray adhesive. Spray both sides being joined together. Let it sit till tacky then carefully press together and go over with a roller or slicker. Make sure to press all the areas down really good. 4) Now once it is padded I cut out the lining leather bigger then the strap or belt. Spray like I mentioned above, carefully apply the strap to the lining leather. Make sure to press it all over to get good contact. 5) Let it sit to the side to dry for a good while. I usually wait atleast a few hours. 6) Cut the lining leather pretty close to the strap. I use my head knife but a razor knife works great or your shears. 7) Stitch your project stitching everywhere there is lining leather. 8) I usually use a good sharp knife to trim it right up next to the strap. Then edge bevel like normal. 9) Finish your edges how you normally would.
  2. As far as it ruining steel knives and such, I think the trick is to go thru all the process first then make sure it is fully dry before you do anything with it. I have a roon sheath for my multi tool. This also has one of the tandy black belt clips on it. The gerber mutli tool has been stored in this thing for the last few years with occasional use and there is no rust or anything else of that matter. The belt clip looks fine as well.
  3. Hand stitching I use linen that I wax myself. Bourbors linen to be exact usually 6cord. For machine stitching I use the bonded nylon thread.
  4. Thanks Wiz, still working on it. Ive got it doing pretty good stitches on 5oz chap type leather and what not. I am going to play with it more tomorrow. Still learning a bunch about these guys. Need to get one of those roller feet or teflon feet for it.
  5. Prince was wondering where you got it from. I saw it at barnes and nobles but it was pretty darn pricey. Saw it at a jewelry supply store for pretty decent price but dont know the place and was wondering where you got yours from. Thanks.
  6. Belts and holsters I use vegtan to line with. For my rifle slings and guitar straps I would line them with suede (or suede splits I guess in the correct term).
  7. Well finally getting into trying to get my 211 up and running. Bought it used and slightly broken before my underway. Got it all lubed and relatively cleaned. Put in a few new components and some 92 thread and a size 20 needle or something (sorry cant remember but it seems about the right size). Well had to retime the hook assembly (forgot what its called) to grab the thread properly. Now I notice when stitching it wants to bunch up underneath the work. Looks like a little rat nest along the stitch. What is usually causing this? Another question is there a shim you have to change on these for larger thread and needles? I wanted to try 138 thread if I could although 92 will work for now. How do you guys set these up for sewing thinner leather? Would like to be able to sew about 6oz vegtan if I can. Mostly wallet interiors and such. Now it does still have the clutch motor, am assuming this thing needs to get replaced to really give it any kind of torque so will be looking at a servo motor in the future. Thanks for any info guys.
  8. Yeah those are two great places. Lots of the people here get there supplies from them, pretty sure anyways. Just got some orders in from both of them. Cambell has some good needle/thread information as well on there site. Thanks for sharing. Art knows of many more I am sure that are also good to get stuff from.
  9. PM Bronco or Ricky as both are still on the forums. I didnt get back to this thread in time to talk to either one and ended up just going to a boot repair place down the street. It was more expensive then doing it myself but it was done right and they lasted just fine after that.
  10. Finally got some Barry King bevelers, wow what a difference. Expensive but so nice.

Any thoughts about the order these tools should be purchased? I am interested in replacing a lot of the tools I use for Sheridan style and am really lost as to what tools I should upgrade first. Any thoughts?

I would look at what you use most and start replacing in that order. I got 4 bevelers and two basket stamps. The bevelers because those I struggled with the most with the cheapo ones.

  11. Artificer where are you located at? I know in my general area there are several usually of like the 206rb's and such. Some in great shape some not so much. Various other flatbed machines of that style as well.
  12. Just saw this listing last night. Would go check it out myself but cant afford to spend any money right now. http://seattle.craigslist.org/kit/bfs/2612744434.html Guy says he has about 10 industrial machines for sale. May be something in there that could be worth looking at.
  13. Thanks guys for the info. Ill see about getting some straight mineral oil, I had ordered this from cambell when I ordered a few other things not thinking that the oil from that store would be more catered to the big beasties. Maybe Ill just use it on my 211g155 but even that old guy may have pretty tight clearances in comparison to the big boys. Thats funny Spinner.
  14. So I got some of this lily stainless machine oil today and noticed it is far darker then the stuff I got with my CB4500. Its more of a lighter brown color while the small bottle I got with the machine is pretty much clear. Just not sure if this is how that Lily oil is suppose to be. I assume this is a good oil to use on these guys. Anyways thanks for the info.
  15. Yeah didnt see that part until I read it again last night. I have noticed that one will pop up from time to time in the WA, OR area. I have noticed several of the flatbed machines on CL as well. Not sure if any of those are anything that you would be looking for or not. Anyways good luck, if I see anything Ill post a reply here.
  16. Its a bit of a drive but its the latest one I have scene in our neck of the woods. http://seattle.craigslist.org/sno/bfs/2611109177.html
  17. Just got my grizzly motor, time to make my burnisher.

  18. If you line it line it with vegtan leather. If you line it with chrome tan leather it can have negative effects on the older style guns. The chromium salts arent so great for them ecspecially the blued guns. Ofcourse people shouldnt store there guns in the holster anyways but many of them do. There are techniques to smooth out the inside. Gum tag works, I personally just use the snoseal or similar that I use on the outside. It smooths out the inside as well. A common approach for some is to use two thinner pieces of leather, flesh to flesh and make it that way. Say two pieces of 5oz which doubles up to a good 10oz thickness and you get smooth on both sides. Katsass makes his this way.
  19. Love it, took a little while to get use to it which wasnt that hard considering it came pretty much ready to go. To be perfectly honest I still think there is something about handstitching considering the looks of it and the precision you can get in certain situations but having this machine has really allowed me to take on tasks that I just normally wouldnt have time for in my current situation.
  20. Its just wickett and craig brown harness leather. Well dark brown. The only thing I did was oil it with a light coat then applied some sno-seal, a light coat. The harness leather comes with the top coat pretty much already done. Just finish the edges.
  21. Hey Nick I picked up one of the cowboy 4500, works great. On the belt they are just round holes. I think its just the pic that makes them look a little oblong.
  22. Well have not posted anything in a while due to being under water for a little bit so figured I would show the few things I got done before I left. Hopefully will have some more stuff to share in the near future that are a little more interesting. Got a ruger 357lcr for the fiancee and had to make her a holster for it. Quick relatively plane OWB. Stitched this on my new machine, made for a quicker easier process thats for sure. Also made her a nice double layer belt. Figured if she ever wanted to carry for whatever reason she needed a nice belt to do it with. Left the belt natural, oiled and waxed then put it in the sun for a bit. Its plain but I personally think it looks pretty nice. Thinking of doing one for myself. Also made a sheath for my buck and flashlight for work. The design for this needs a little adjustment as the straps tend to want to pull off to the side a little but other then that it help up great. Made this from WandC harness leather. Pretty good tough stuff. Critique and comments welcome as always.
  23. Finally got some pics, this is a small card holder. 3 layers of 4oz leather, relatively soft for vegtan. Didnt do anything to any marks on it. Using the 4500 with a 24 needle and 277 thread. Hope this helps. Also wanna add I am still playing with various adjustments on this guy so dont wanna go and say this is the best it can do. Also this is with the holster plate, and the right side foot that I got from Bob. There is one from the front and two from the back.
  24. Not sure if you have tried yet but wicket and craig has some nice harness leather that I have played with. I dont make bridles and such but have used it on some projects that require durability and it has performed very well. The edges tend to hold a burnish if done right and areas of wear tend to get a nice shine to them. The leather is pretty darn durable. They will send you some swaths, I know it may be hard to determine if they will work for you but you may get an idea. They have harness and bridle, have not tried all versions of them but worth looking into maybe. Nice thing is you can order however many sides you want and they will usually split the sides down for you.
