yes i agree with megabit. get some paracord or even some readymade suede lace....some of my first projects were with the suede lace you can do alot with it and it gives you the feel of braiding a material that is flat and allows you to control the twist of the lace. it is also quite inexpensive and available at tandy or various hobby shops.

i know....nate, leland or any of the tcaa braiders....the braiders from argentina...wholly cow, that country has forgotten more about braiding than most will ever know.
-
i have heard from other braiders on this forum that there are mistakes in houghts books as well....guess nobody is perfect.
-
its probably some sort of applique braid used to join to pieces of leather....i think there are a couple types in grants encyclopedia of braiding
-
i still cant figure out why everyone says that about grants books....i have done every knot in all 3 of his books and the only ones that are messed up are the ginfer and the side button knot for the bosal(really hard to follow the drawings). grants encyclopedia has lots of applique braid work that would look awesome on holsters.

wow that sucks...hope he finds more peace in the next life.

my mom and i were discussing projects for next years leather shows and one that she suggested was a full rigged hackamore all in roo with fiador and mecate in roo also....thats alot of roo, and alot of braiding, lucky for me i do the lace prep, finishing and knots and fancy braids and my mom does all the straight plaiting

well yes i did shrink all my cord used for reins...and it may well have been the braid i used...i did a set of 7 foot croc ridge split reins in purple for my moms mare...havent used them as reins but used one as a lead for the mare and it stretched quite a lot. also did a roping rein in the ubraidit style of braiding and havent tried that yet either to see if it will stretch that way. my mom wants a chap leather mecate for her mare when she goes into the hackamore so i have my work cut out for me with that. im just glad she didnt want one in kangaroo!

i have looked at that website a few times...and yes it would help you learn to tie turksheads if your having trouble forming the bights. i think some of it depends on what type of learner you are and if you can learn from a book. i have not seen the th cookbook perhaps brian from khww.net would know something more about it. maybe try posting a new topic about it and see what responses you can get.

did you stretch your paracord before braiding? i have had problems with too much stretch in my reins after braiding even when ive prestretched the cord.

thats spectacular!!!! -
thanks for the info...would love to see a pic
-
shelly...how did you get that ? could you post a pix of it so we can see what he used?
-
it has been mentioned here before...if you search you should be able to find it....i believe it was said that it is too stretchy for braiding. perhaps that is why the indians did not make rawhide out of it.
-
hey bullwhips thats a nice crop...what do you use for a core
-
in bruce grants book how to make cowboy horse tack...he talks about that...you shave some was into a jar of white gasoline, as much as will dissolve...then you soak your strings in it..cant remember how long...he says it sizes sleazy leather.
-
i believe that was produced for their 50th anniversary in 1969.
-
yes but shipping must be considered in your costs because it is an expense every time you order roo. i used to take the shipping and divide it between the amount of leather ordered and factor it into the sq foot costs to determine if my prices were still in line. yes the smell of tanned leather is so nice....i used to order roo like 10 at a time...oh how i miss those days.

belfast right? perhaps you need to learn to type with an irish accent!

and remember that hardtke gets their hides from packer as well...now i dont braid whips but when i was still wholesaling kangaroo leashes i used a bunch of roo from them and split it down pretty darn thin and never had any breakage problems. when i first started buying roo from them it was 6.50 a sq ft...oh man i miss those prices! its actually pretty easy to calculate how much an item is costing you....measure the diameter of the circle that you get when you cut your hide...then go to one of the lace calculators online...you just put in lace size and center hole size if you cut from the middle and it will tell you how many yds or feet or whatever you will get...so i just put in the next size up form the avg size i use...get my total possible feet from circle and then take my hide cost and tada...a per whatever cost for my lace...a little more simple math...length of lace x how many laces and i will know how much it cost me to make that bracelet or leash.
-
their rates are very reasonable...just the regular ups shipping when i order from them and i usually do cod as well
-
so that converts to 5.38 square foot which equals $18.85 per sq ft
-
what size was marked on it? should have been stamped with a size on the flesh side. if you give me the dm size marked i can figure out the cost per sq foot from there.
