Hand Stitching Beginner - Minimum Tools Required?
TinkerTailor replied to makiba's topic in Getting Started
2 boards and 2 c-clamps make a basic cheap stitching clamp that will work for wallets and belts and things. Bit of a pain to reposition, but once in place it will free up your hands to stitch. Holding the work while stitching can make things harder, and a stitching clamp holds softer leathers straight, which makes it way easier to keep the backside stitches from straying. -
I also use evaporust. I used to use electrolysis, but the evaporust works in most cases just as good if not better, and there is no power needed, and no off-gassing concerns. Chemistry is your friend. Just a side tip, you can dissolve aluminum and not steel with lye and do the opposite with alum salts. The alum salts can eat away steel broken bolts in aluminum, and i use the lye trick to get stuck aluminum seatposts out of a steel bicycle frame. The trick is contact time. Here is a good video posted today on getting out broken bolts this way. The crucial bit is how Ave increases the contact time: He has a really funny channel. I think you may like this canuck, Art. Viewers be forwarned, he uses some minor foul language humerously.

Need Some Info On Ferdco Pro1010
TinkerTailor replied to crmiller84's topic in Leather Sewing Machines
I have a techsew 5100 (441) and i have it set up to not mark. Smooth feet and just enough foot pressure to hold the work down and not skip stitches. I have used it on 4-5 oz chrome or veg tan 2-4 layers as well as 20+ oz of veg. I always test on a scrap first. i just kept backing off the pressure until the material started lifting, and increased it a turn or two from there. Once i did this, i only need to go a turn one way or the other depending on thickness. I did have to crank it down some when i was stitching a wallet with a thick plastic window, and it marked a little there, but i was able to work the marks out. Regardless of the pressure, if the feet and dogs have teeth, they will bite. -
Don't most websites frown upon companies that pay people for reviews? That is what is happening here. What is the point of a review site if you can buy good reviews.......

A doctor friend of mine had a special needs patient that had a feeding tube and it was badly clogged. They flew in a really high priced ivy league specialist in feeding tubes, who went to the pop machine, bought a coke and injected it into the feeding tube. 10 mins later the clog was clear. The doctor apparently then said that coke was the strongest food grade acid/ solvent there is. He then collected his cheque and went home.

Just watched part 1 and 2. Nice work. I like your videos and can't wait for all the good stuff you are going to make with that new camera.

Perhaps the problem with the link is that this topic is in the "Show Off" category not in the "For Sale" category. Selling stuff here is against forum rules I believe.

Look up Armitage Leather and Leodis leather on youtube. Nigel Armitage and Ian Atkinson both have tons of great tutorials. Nigel's stitching videos are top notch.

Black Dye...natural In Middle.....belt
TinkerTailor replied to dfrensdorff's topic in How Do I Do That?
Just a heads up, I have had the dye from those printed paper towels transfer to stuff when using them with solvents. -

Looking For Solution To Bobbin Running Out In The Middle Of Project
TinkerTailor replied to Mike516's topic in Sewing Leather
Check the bobbin more frequently. Sometimes i will put in a fresh one for the long seam, and put the partial back in for the little bits. Starting again 3-4 stitches back and overstitching the last 3 stitches is one way to fix it, so s starting again in the next hole and tieing both sets of threads of on the backside, for projects where the back don't matter. -
My website is fine. The link in the post above mine to seaboardsolutionsgroup.com is giving a 403.

What is the model number on the motor? Here is the parts breakdowns for a few similar motors, if not the same. http://www.efka.net/en/Produkte/ersatzteile-EN-FKV-motor.htm they also use 6302ZZ. and 6001.2ZR, also readily available. The 6303 and 6302 are 5 bux each in canada.

It might just be dust in the fan or a bit of lube needed. Rip it open, clean and lube it and put it back together. That was an expensive well built motor. You pay for good things so they are built to last and service. I think it is well worth trying, Lube is cheap and easy. The bearings are likely replaceable from places like mcmaster-carr. I looked up a few parts lists for other efka motors and they list what appear to be standard bearing sizes. However do keep in mind if it starts to go south, or major parts are needed, draw the line and bin it. (edit: it is a 6303ZZ bearing used on all the motors i found breakdowns for.) Its not that hard to run a new 3 wire grounded cord and ground the metal case of the motor.

Stitching Fixed Keepers On Straps With A Sewing Machine
TinkerTailor replied to GoldArmored's topic in How Do I Do That?
I would have to agree, however i have done it with a narrow keeper and a wide belt, and it worked ok. It would also depend on the foot clearance you have available. While not the best method, i think it is the only all machine method to accomplish this. If you can curve the belt up ward on the non foot side, it will give a little more clearance if needed. -
Stitching Fixed Keepers On Straps With A Sewing Machine
TinkerTailor replied to GoldArmored's topic in How Do I Do That?
If the keeper is loose enough you can stitch right up to the first stitch of the second side, then wrap the keeper behind the foot, putting it in place, and continue stitching. Saw a video once, can't find it. -
Here is a topic about that manual: http://leatherworker.net/forum/index.php?showtopic=28906 Sutton was sold to stanley bostitch in the 80's and the owner went to gateway shoe machine: http://www.gatewayshoemachine.com/gateway/?section=products

How Do You Prevent Too Many Orders If You Work Alone?
TinkerTailor replied to Tallbald's topic in Marketing and Advertising
I would use it as an excuse to buy tools and machines to maximize your time as well as looking into ways to be more efficient without a sacrifice in quality. Start thinking ahead, and if you are already cutting a belt, cut 2 more, you will use them. Setup and cleanup for a given task can take alot of time, and can be reduced by performing more repetitions of the task when all is setup for it . Making 3 belts at the same time is faster than one at a time. You edge dye them all at once, cut them all at once etc. Saves minutes here and there. Those minutes turn into a few more belts a month. -
They are not far off the other suppliers of heavy bonded nylon, from what i have seen. The market gets scarce bigger than 138, both in suppliers and color. To be honest i did not know of the Vancouver warehouse until i got this sample. Their website makes it seem like their brick and mortar stores are all east coast. I am going to stop by probably monday and see whats up.
