Hi, does anyone have any suggestion on where to get veg. tanned leather in spain.. I´m sure there are a lot and they have tanneries, but so far I´m out of luck.. I have contacted a few companies in Igualada, which is famous for their leather, but the places I have found, doesn't sell veg. tanned leather.. I´m mostly interested in Barcelona, Catalonia area, but anywhere goes.. :-)

I dont know very much about these machines, but I often think that when I see the more "simple" mechanism to thread the machine, it´s more suitable for lighter work.. but I might be wrong and maybe someone else can help more :-) Good luck! Maybe you can ask the owner of this machine: http://youtu.be/uBHhiDz6MQw Also this guy was selling one: http://leatherworker.net/forum/index.php?showtopic=49645

Hi there, I came across this Goldex HC-335 sewing machine.. but I have never heard of Golden before.. is it one of those "copy" brands? And with the HC-335 label, I´m thinking of the Pfaff 335.. ? Does anyone know these machines? Any information is much appreciated!

I heard about a place called Igualada.. About an houre drive from Sitges and more or less the same from Barcelona.. Anyone been there? I heard they have a famous leather museum and leather made in this area is known for their good quality and modern technology.. Does anyone know if there is only factories there or shops selling leather for private usage too.. Like nat veg tanned tooling leather? Anyone? :-)

Hi there, does anyone know a good (or several) leather stores in Barcelona, or close? Also if anyone got a link to a good classifieds site, where to buy/look for used industrial sewing machines in Catalonia area? Thanks in advance! :-)
-
Thanks for the links Tom! Do you (or anyone else) have any experience with any of these? The one I bought, I paid about $90 for it in Norway.. but I knew it was top quality and I had tested it a little. I have found quite a few on eBay and other places too, but I don´t know their quality as i have no experience with these tools, exept the one I already bought, which is hand made. I guess it´s like other leather knifes.. the better the steel is, the sharper cut and it keeps sharp for a while.

Anyone, feel free to suggest one if you know or have experience with a top quality tool, more or less similar to this (picture above) :-) I would rather have one very good than two medium..

Thanks "cybertrasher" I have several versions of both the tools you linked to, so I´m mostly interested in similar tools as pictured at the top that looks like wood carving tools, in palm size (if that makes sense) with a bent/bowed "blade" :-)
-
Thanks for a quick reply :-) The tool at the picture is hand made, so I understand it can be hard to guess what it´s actually made for, what I actually ment to ask was, is there tools like this made especially for leather, that anyone know, or if it was the same as wood carving tool in general. I have some cheap wood carving tools laying around, but they are almost impossible to keep super sharp and I guess they are crap.. is there any special brand of tools with high quality steel that anyone can suggest? :-) Marius

Hi there, havent been able to check in for a while, but now I am :-) I bought this carving tool (see picture) in a leather craft store in Norway.. and I have a few questions. Does anyone know if this is especially made for leather, or is it the same as small/fine carving tools for wood carving. Mine is super sharp, and stays pretty sharp too, so I guess the steel is pretty hard. What is this tool actually called, when searching on eBay or other places? If it is the same as wood carving tool, are they sharpened the same way? And last, does anyone have links to online stores, where to find high quality carving tools like this, which is good for leather carving? This one is about 4 mm at the widest on the blade and makes a V cut.. I also like the bend on it, so it´s easy to control. I´m looking for similar and other small ones with different degrees of the V and some small U shaped.. and it has to be pretty small like this to fit good in my hand. The total length of this one is about 4,5 inches. Any suggestions?

Thanks a lot Tor, I´ll call you next week as I´m at a upholstery convention in Sweden this weekend.. if it´s used as a reverse button, it would be great. Also got the manual for the control board and engine. Talk soon! Marius :-)

Sorry, but I have no clue what this is in english, but I´m looking for a place to order small name/brand tags in fabric, that I can sew on my leather products.. Anyone know where to get some made with my name on? If you look at the picture, you will see what I´m looking for :-) Thanks!

Starting to learn the machine little by little.. The extra stitch is not solved, and the knee lifter is still not working, but I found out that I can lift the foot from a button on the control panel, when I stop sewing and want to change direction. When I´m done I lift the foot by the heel action, which will backtack and end it all.. also the automatic thread cutter works great. It´s a great machine and I can now sew pinstriping motives beside painting them on motorcycles.. ..on this one I used a 160 LR needle and Serafil 20 thread. I also did a new test at sewing two layers of relatively thick veg. tanned leather, and it seems like it was no problem at all. http://youtu.be/boqgnK4uU8I I´m getting really exited by this machine :-)

A little problem I dont understand.. I have a air powered knee lift on my machine, but for some reason it´s programmed to work in another way, or maybe not working at all as nothing happens when hitting it. The only way to lift the foot is to use the heel function on the pedal, but when doing so, it takes an extra stitch, but not lock the thread, so it leaves just an extra hole, which is no good, especially when I´m doing some detailed work. In the video, when you see the foot stops, I released the speed pedal, and when it takes the last extra stitch is when I hit the heel function. As a friend mentioned over the phone, it might be just an adjustment, maybe I havent been easy enough at the heel, as this machine should have two heel functions (I mean I was pressing the heel very light) or maybe it is just programmed in another way to work this way, but I cant see any reason why it should work like this, as it just leaving an extra hole.. (as far as I know, all the backtacking functions was turned off when I experienced this).. anyone have an suggestion, option, tips for why it acts like this or what I can do to fix it? http://youtu.be/GozAD_ceFKI I´m greatful for any tips! :-)

Thanks a lot Trox, your help is amazing and without your knowledge I would probably still buy a lot of cheap and useless machines! I really appreciate it! :-)

Finally I have just started to explore my new machine.. I don´t know much about it, or sewing machines in general, but I´ll try to document everything I find out, so I better remember what I just found out and maybe other people find it useful some day.. and maybe someone have other ideas, tips and tricks of what I´m doing, or trying to do :-) Very thankful for comments and help! Today I found out how the automatic backtacking worked and what button that was on the menu board.. looks like there are some combinations, but so far.. Here is a iPhone video of it in action: http://youtu.be/Y_q2K_tkqqU On this video, I had not adjusted the sting length.. I guess I can adjust the reverse lenght so it matches the forward stitches?

A little iPhone video clip from the JUKI DNU 241H sewing leather at the shop today.. :-) http://youtu.be/-WM4jDPcvGo The bobbin size. Machine. Stitches.. (the tension was adjusted after this photo tho, so it looks better now) :-)

Hi there, we have that machine at the upholstery shop. I think it's a great machine and I have been sewing both belts and wallets in relatively thick veg tanned leather. The bobbin size is not huge, but more than enough.. A typical industrial machine size I guess. I'm not an sewing machine expert, but if you get it cheap, it's nothing to think about.. I'm very happy with the machine at work :-)

Hi there, I just got my new (to me, but obviously used) Durkopp Adler 291.. well, it only says Durkopp on the side, but the front panel has the DA logo.. it´s pretty stuffed with everything, probably more than I need and more that can go wrong, but so far it looks like it´s in pretty good shape. Is there anyone out there, og here.. that is using a 291, N291 or similar (294, 295) for leather work? It´s a flat bed machine, but my goal is to use it for leather work.. some heavy nat veg tanned leather, but also thinner stuff as ordinary seats with out motive, wallets, bags etc.. It would be nice to "meet" anyone that uses that machine for leather work, to share experiences (I guess in the start, it´s me that has some questions). Thomas Brinkhoff from Durkopp said it was the 291-185081 or 291-185082.. but I´m not quite sure whats the difference.. I only know the difference from the 291-164062, which was: 291-164062: Stitch length up to 6mm 291-185082: like 164062 but Stitch length up to 10mm automatic stitch number correction when changing the material feed automatic backtacking My new machine.. Does anyone have a good explanation what all these symbols means? Some of them I know, but.. I guess all these holes are for attaching different guides and helpers? Well, if anyone feel like it, I´m hoping to get some more info, tips, tricks, etc for this machine.. Marius/287ccm :-)
