    I use "Golden" brand acrylic paints in the tubes. Expensive but u don't need much. Also use very fine natural hair brushes. AND.. if needed instead of water, use Goldens "Paint Retarder" which will thin the thick acrylic gel-type paint properly. Go for many litely painted layers and build up the colour you want ( dry well between each layer) rather than just paint on thick paint for color bc it won't last.

    I was told it would be fine for a dog collar but I too would like to know if it will stretch.. before I buy a side. I like the colours better than the burg latigo which bleeds like a stuck pig!

    What type of paints do you use for a dog collar. I am using Golden brand acrylics but have only done dogs names. How and what do you use for waterproofing and sealing your colours and artwork? It's beautiful! BJP

    Where did you learn to design and how do you set the spots. I have no luck doing that. Any good hints where to get good prongs and good instruction!? I use textured rivets and domed rivets and conchos etc as well as hand painting ( just started) but have lots of spots I just have no clue how to make a great pattern and then set them nicely

    Spooky has said it right. I use 5 holes with Ctr hole as size given but my holes differ for width of collar strap. 5/8" wide collar strap the holes are 1/2" apart 1" wide strap the holes are 5/8" apart 1.5" > wide strap the holes are 1" apart. I don't want a Pomeranian wearing a collar with holes 1" apart. It would not likely fit too well! Same as a Great Dane wearing a collar with a lot of holes 1/2" apart. It's all about size and spacing I add approx 6-8" on to the length of strap ( you can cut away but never add leather back on)... i use about 4" fold over because after the buckle I also add a dee ring and a metal strap keeper. Thus more holes and spacing needed for rivet holes and buckle tang slot It's up to you what you want to add on the strap but 3" doubled for a d ring and buckle is necessary

    I'd love to try a collar like this! I just don't know when to or how to do the angles and how wide the piece with the buckle and holes need to be. How do you do diff sizes Any hints????

    Thanks! I bought Golden brand silver acrylic paint, and painted 2 coats with one day drying in between each coat. Didn't dilute it tho. This was a practice strap! How do I dilute it and what should the consistency be like when painting with it. I then used 3 thin coats of resolene with 8 hrs in between each reso coat. Golden tube acrylic is very stiff. So really need some help as to how thin it should go on. Art store ppl have no clue about painting leather.

    Wipe off any excess with a rag or gloved finger, and then the next coat shud go on more evenly. I have stopped using waterstains because of cracking issues. Good luck.

    Waterstains are garbage if they're used for things like belts collars leashes. Anything with a hard fold because they tend to crack or craze. Dyes are much better I find. Do the wet leather at the bend thing!. It works perfectly. And really be careful how much resolene you apply. I had the worst time with that and actually gave up using it.. Until I started leaving each coat to dry overnight. Now it's great stuff!!

    Hi everyone..HELP!... I'm having a very hard time finding a dog collar template that has a handle built in to it. A "restraint" handle. I've been asked to build one but need a template that works. If anyone has a template or such, I'd be so happy! Thanks! BJP

    Thanks electrathon. That's a good start. Do you know of a very good brand that is better than Tandy Cova color? one that builds color up nicely w/o streaking. and how would i seal it to finish and waterproof it. I don't want it flaking off when it's bent etc. Thanks in advance!! BJP

    I am making leather lined leather dog collars which usually are embellished with studs and stones etc. I have now been asked to stamp and paint the dogs name on each collar. HELP! This is not an issue with a lighter colour collar, as I usually use black USMC Fiebing's spirit based dye to paint lettering which covers the collar colour.. but now have been asked for black dyed collars with silver lettering! What product should I use, and can someone tell me how to use it and also how to finish it for wear and tear/ waterproofing etc? The only product I know of is Cova Colours by Tandy. Also I'm in Canada, so the product would need to be available to me here. i'm really stumped here!! thanks so much! BJP

    Hi NVLeatherWorx, I use both tooling leather, ( veg tan) and also use latigo for my dog collars. I don't ever put any extra dye on the Latigo except to touch up the cut sides.. Sometimes. The bleeding of color is just what happens when I condition the collar after its finished and wiped down with a rag. ALWAYS get red dye on the rag I wipe the conditioner off with and color comes off when the rag is damp. Ugh. Does this happen with all colours? And for how long?

    Hi Art, I have a chocolate lab so l'm not too worried about color bleed on him... But I do make collars to sell and am quite worried that the customers' dog will turn pink around the neck if it's a lighter color dog! So not good for business! Lol. Can't have that! I don't know what to recommend to the customers to use to get the dye off the dogs fur. Do you have any good ideas? Do you .. or does anyone know why the burgundy latigo seems to bleed regardless of what I've done to it. Black doesn't give me near as many problems as it seems to lessen with conditions etc. Maybe I should stick to brown or tan Latigo? I'm stumped and I really love working with it and would love to find an answer! Thanks.. Bev

    I make dog collars and have been using veg tan so they can be stamped and tooled. Recently I switched to Latigo, and have made some nice collars but don't feel I can sell them as they bleed when I rub them with a cloth, or conditioner. They have been finished for some time now but still have a generous amt of dye bleed. Worry that dogs hair will stain when it gets wet, and really not a good thing to have happen when u want to sell dog collars What can I do to prevent or stop this? Thanks.. Bev

    BTW.. My resolene is mixed 50-50. But I think I may have applied it too thick. Not sure. Any hints out there??

      I use a 1 inch bristle brush, . . . brush it on only heavy enough to get bubbles to form all over the project, . . . brush out the bubbles, let dry, use it.

    Anyone have any hints ideas etc.. HELP!! The acrylic resolene finish has left dried up mounds of bubbles on a few of my collar straps. How do I get these out ? It's already been sitting overnight so the AR coat isn't fresh. This has never happened before!

    I use acrylic resolene on my leather dog collars as a finish. I've used a damp sponge, damp soft cloth and a dauber. The sponge and cloth are great for applying. The dauber is not good. It leaves waay too many bubbles which I just found out don't pop but dry hard on the surface. ERRRR... Now I have 4 collar straps which are pretty useless because they are covered with clumps of dry bubbles. One strap actually has blotches that are hardened. Anyone out there please have any ideas of how I can rescue these straps ?? Can I remove the resolene?? HELP!?! Thanks so much..

    I line my collars with Napa leather ( glue and stitch).. And am wondering if I condition leather before dyeing it will the neatsfoot oil prevent the glue from sticking to the lining?

      as long as you don't over oil (saturate) the vegtan, and give it sufficient time to evenly spread through the leather you should be fine. Also, only condition the grain side, not dip. Sage advice from this site: "Stop oiling about 3 coats before you think it has enough."

    I am running into an issue lately on my dog collars ( some not all) it seems when I use the Fiebings USMCblack dye, the leather cracks when I attach a bucke with rivets.

      it would seem that the leather is pretty dry for that to happen. You might try 1. oiling before dyeing, and/or 2. conditioning the leather AFTER dyeing.

      I condition all my leather collars after dyeing.. But true it could be a drier section of the hide.

      It seems to only happen when I use the USMC black dye from Fiebings.

      What should I use for a conditioner..?

      I line my collars with Napa after they are dyed and embellished by glueing and stitching. I did read somewhere that using neatsfoot oil will prevent glue from adhering to the leather if it was put on the underside. True?

      Maybe they have been cracking all along, it just shows up more with black dye.

      Try, before you bend the leather to dip in warm water, that usually works.

      Just soften before you bend. Meats foot won't hurt but it will hamper the gluing process.

      I use Wickett and craig show harness and that has so much oil and tallow in it it seldom cracks...
