  1. @CowboyDan- I'm thinking cross body straps might also be good since snatch and grabs are fairly common.
  2. I don't know... I came out of Florida an I'm pretty dang nice And I heard about something green coming out of G'Ville that is supposed to be really good too. Against my wishes, the wife chose Midwives who graduated from UF. I made sure they knew how I felt. There was really no question about it, when the wife went in for a C Section, and there was the FSU Seminole painted on her belly, with "Nole Parking Only" underneath it. Sooo... how you liking pyrography?
  3. When I was a kid, I found a small oval buckle in my Uncle's basement. It was a US buckle from the civil war. I ended up with said buckle, and spent years trying to find out more about it. It is brass, and has 3 prongs.2 of the prongs held it to the belt, and one went in the adjustment hole, but it didn't match any of the belt buckles I could find. Turns out it isn't a belt buckle, but was used on a strap for crates. This has absolutely nothing to do with this topic, but I thought I'd share anyways
  4. I don't have the bandwidth for video. Out here, cell signals get lost if the wind blows.
  5. Ok, here is a very simplified line drawing of what I have in mind. It is very simplified, because Photoshop really isn't meant for doing paths, and it is hard to concentrate and put a lot of effort into anything when you are in serious pain. The bottom and sides are one piece. If I go with a fancy lighter leather, I'd likely add a second piece to the bottom for strength. The front and rear panels would be heavier leather. You will notice that the rear has two panels, a heavy outer panel with top flap, and lighter inner panel on the inside. It is between these two pieces, that would form the pocket for the holster, attached to the rear panel. This back panel was the one I was worried about not being able to support the weight of the pistol. The top, bottom, and left side would be closed, leaving the right side open for access to said holster, as marked by the red square. I would have a flap with a snap from the back panel to the ride side panel (Not shown here) to secure the pistol pocket. Fold down the ear/tabs on the side, add rings, sew, add strap to rings. So...?
  6. Thanks again Nv, you are doing a bang up job answering my questions, and the advice sprinkled with amusing anecdotes is great!
  7. Ah, see. All this was before the C Rations, so that makes perfect sense. And on a side note, they were still passing out C Rations when I was in Basic Training in the 80's. It was a game to see who had the oldest dated can at any given meal. I remember having fruit from 1940something, and discovering the inspiration behind Dr Seuss' Green Eggs and Ham. ps, my chief weapon is surprise, with a side of big freaking rock
  8. Sorry I couldn't be more help. The only reason I checked into this post, was hoping to get some info on leather burning. So... I'm still waiting. And there are two good things that come from Gainesville. Tom Petty is one, and the Florida Gators ain't the other
  9. Father, may I have a pony? No Tony, you may not have a pony.
  10. That looks pretty solid to me. As far as keeping the jaws shut, there is another user here that made a cam setup on their's that is just awesome. Search the posts for "pony", I think you might find it.
  11. I like it, even though I have never heard the name before. Is it a document type bag?
  12. @dirkba- I just gotta ask... what kind of stuff do you hunt down there?
  13. That I really couldn't tell you. I have never tried pyrography, only heard some mention of it. I sort of wanted to try it, but haven't gotten around to it... I'd likely procrastinate about it, but keep putting it off? However, I do have experience burning my hands on stuff, and learned that modern science has developed gloves for people like me. I'd like to give you a review on how well these gloves work... but I haven't gotten around to actually buying a pair yet.
  14. Ya know, I had been to almost every corner of the interweb looking for a 44 Magnum, and I actually saw the Bunkhouse one... but I was going under the impression it was the newer style of revolver the other hunters around here are using. In fact, on another board, there was a pic of the holster he was asking about, and it showed the "Dirty Harry" styled Magnum, not the old Hogleg. So I called the guy and had him send a pic. Long story mildly shortened, yeah, the Bunkhouse should work. I just need to adjust slightly for the scope. Thanks SLP! By the way, that was a very nice holster you did.
  15. I can't help with your pen "gunking up", but your other issue, the pen getting too hot to handle..Heat Resistant Gloves might help you out some Tom Petty ROCKS
  16. In a way, I kinda envy your way of life. But, the sad reality is, gun control is only affecting the average law abiding citizens. The less abiding type have no problems getting weapons. Home invasions by addicts and other freaks, muggings, murders, rapes... it just isn't a safe world. There were 2 cops shot last night, only an hour away from here, by a nut in body armor. And back home in Florida, you also had to worry about the L.E.O.s shooting you, kicking in your door and shooting home owners, when they "made a mistake". I may not prefer to carry in the city, but I am always armed and alert. The latter is more important.
  17. Ok, I know what a fanny pack is. Funny how much geography can change what things are. You call it a "moon bag", we call it a "fanny pack"... and apparently, in England "fanny" means something completely different
  18. @dirkba- I'm not sure what you mean by "moon bag". Could you clarify that?
  19. I have a holster to do soon and can't seem to nail down a dummy gun. It is a New Model Ruger Super Blackhawk .44 Magnum w/7.5" barrel. And to make it more interesting, it has a rail and scope. Does anyone know where I can find one?
  20. Now THAT is the kinda stuff I was looking for! I was planning on using veg tanned and doing some tooling. How stiff are those bag stiffeners by the way? As far as the welts (Same thing as piping?), I like the look, and thought that it would be another nice point for the missus to show off... if I don't completely screw it up. So, thanks again for the tips
  21. That is pretty cool. I'm so very glad I asked, because that is something I never would have thought of. I start with wet leather and a big bag of rice...
  22. Yeah, I like it too. My wife also uses the same approach... and I have to wonder if it is due to the X chromosome? I swear, I can find the insurance and registration for every year, except the current year. Maybe one of those document folders is in my future?
  23. @NVLeatherWorx- I'm not much for buying a pattern or a kit, I tend to see what works with other's stuff, what doesn't, and in the end, just do my own thing. I was just hoping to get some concrete foundations to build on. Leather weight and bag stiffeners for example, whether I should or shouldn't attempt a piping, since I don't use a sewing machine. Stuff like that, the things I have never attempted to do. If I attach the holster to the inside of the back, close to the body, will the weight cause the bag wall to sag? When it comes to design, I have a good basic knowledge of what should and shouldn't work, and add my own style and flair to it.
  24. Thanks Tom, I did see that post yesterday, but didn't see anything to help me. The link Dwight posted only showed purses for sale, no patterns, no mention of materials. I also tried clicking the purse tag, and it only showed one post. So much for tag technology I also went through the purse and wallets section for a while, and it is heavy on wallets, not so much on purses. I did see a few things that caught my eye though. So, I started my own post, where I can get the details I'm hoping for... I hope.
  25. @NVLeatherWorx- I hear ya, you make it, you fix it. But, in todays world of WallyMart mentalities, it is easier to replace than to repair. Pride in craftmanship went out with men's hats and ladies gloves. I guess I'm stuck in the olden days, where I would rather spend a bit more for something that can be passed on... but that has nothing to do with this topic. I have never made a purse, but I have a few Ideas on what I want to do, I just have never done it before. I'd like to have a pocket on the back of the purse, easy access from the side. I can make a holster to fit her pistol, but don't want it to show an outline. So I'm thinking that a piece of bag stiffener to attach the holster to might work, or might not have the strength to hold it firmly. Never touched the stuff before. And what about piping around the outside edges? Is that too ambitious for a beginning hand stitcher? How heavy a leather would I want to use? Most purses I've seen her go through, are so thin, maybe 2oz if I were to be generous. So would 4-6 oz be too heavy? Or should I go with 8oz, and make sure it is stiff enough to hold up?
