Mouse pad
Wedgetail replied to Wedgetail's topic in Purses, Wallets, Belts and Miscellaneous Pocket Items
Thanks guys, Battlefield 3 on the PC normally, 3 or 4 on the xbox when the wife isn't watching the TV I prefer the xbox when I have the choice, because my laptop is slooooooooow. I used to use my leg too! Lol it works pretty well for most things but FPS games are not one of them... haha -
G'day all, Personal project over the weekend. I got sick of my mouse going crazy while playing battlefield on my glossy coffee table, so i made myself a mouse pad. This was my second time using a sewing machine, so a couple of things I know I did wrong... but I am getting there It is veg tan belt leather from a double shoulder. It has an acrylic coating which I actually hate for belts, because it can peel and crumples really easily... so I haven't been using it to make many belts! For this project though, I figured the coating would make it easier to clean, and i used the bottom of the shoulder where the hide splits for this experiment, so this would have been waste material anyway. Edges are dyed black, and burnished with beeswax. The back is lined with veg tan pigskin in maple colour, held on with contact cement and red coloured upholstery thread. I hope you like it! I tested it out last night, and it worked perfectly

They turned out really nice! Good job.

Hey guys, My sister in law asked me to make a belt for her son on his birthday. Here it is! Made from oakleaf double shoulder, it measures about 26 inches, is 32mm wide, and has solid brass hardware with nickel plating. Stitched with black SLAM thread. The only thing i dont like about it is the dye... really not a fan of ecoflow water based dyes, too much rub off. Must get some more fiebings pro oil dye.

I watched this video of yours, actually have been a subscriber to your channel for a long time now. Really great work! And excellent video production, it really helps people to learn, and to show what goes into making something like this. I'm also a big fan of your medicine bag, they are really awesome!

English Bridle Leather Belt
Wedgetail replied to Wedgetail's topic in Purses, Wallets, Belts and Miscellaneous Pocket Items
Thanks mate! I have not used tiger, but i can say that SLAM is by far the best i have used! Nigel Armitage (on youtube) made a video comparing them, if you are interested. I bought some based on that video and was very happy with it.- 12 replies

Brown Belt this time...
Wedgetail replied to YinTx's topic in Purses, Wallets, Belts and Miscellaneous Pocket Items
I do like the natural look on edges, it makes for a nice contrast on a piece this size. Some people don't like it, some people do. Its not as 'safe' as dyeing the edges, but it has a place on the shelf for sure- 8 replies

English Bridle Leather Belt
Wedgetail replied to Wedgetail's topic in Purses, Wallets, Belts and Miscellaneous Pocket Items
Thanks mate! I double stitched it because if a thread breaks for any reason it is still strong, and it doesnt affect the aesthetic like a missing stitch would... plus i over engineer things. Haha- 12 replies

Even better if you can get a toggle and end stopper, rather than tying a knot like i did... Some boot lace hooks and a hair tie work really nicely too So true! I make heaps of these from the offcuts when i put a straight edge on a hide or double shoulder.

An easy project for newbies to practice, and functional too! All you need is a take away coffee cup that you can use to cut down into a template. Then some leather, eyelets, and some sort of lace to make a sliding knot or some bungee cord. You can do all sorts of tooling or whatever, but I like to keep mine simple with just my makers mark.

OK guys, now that it has been gifted by my client to their recipient for Christmas: Here is a recently completed project that I have been itching to share! It is Hermann Oak English Bridle, and the colour is Havana. The red stitching is called 'Slam Thread' by Lekoza. It is stitched all the way down once, backstitched all the way back to the top, and then backstitched down 2 holes again to finish. Edges are bevelled, dyed dark brown, and burnished with bees wax. I hope you like it!

Hahaha i feel you, sometimes you get going and there is no 'plan', only the outcome in your mind. Really great looking and functional item! I am sure she will love it, and that'll keep you in the girlfriend's good books -

G'day all, Decided to have a go at using a sewing machine for the first time since high school textiles back in 1997... This is what i came up with! It is goatskin about .8-1mm thick, beautifully soft, with a black calico lining and a jeans zipper. It measures about 9x5.5 inches. I think the wife, who bought me the old singer 201k sewing machine for $50 a couple of months ago, will appreciate this as a makeup bag, clutch, or something like that. Im pretty happy with my first attempt, but learned a few things along the way that i will do better next time. I hope you like it.

Neodymium magnets, I think. And I think you use them with steel... So you could put the steel on the phone case (I.e some washers), hidden with an inset style lining, and some flat round neodymium magnets under the lining in the back of the case. Magnets are surprisingly strong! I'd imagine you would get better results with two small magnets though, one each at top and bottom of the case. That way it won't spin around, because the two magnets will hold it from two points. Actually... I think I just found my next personal project! This sounds fun!

Stitching is better for sure, though glue should hold up fine... Most of the cheaper ones are just stuck down with a double sided tape and they stay together pretty well, glue is more "permanent"! Haha I really like the magnetic look and function. Means you can take the phone out to talk on without having all your cards and stuff up at your ear. It is usually just a magnet in the case, and a bit of metal or a magnet in the cover. Both are under a lining to hide them, and I am not sure if they have any shielding etc. Here is an example, but you can probably just find a magnet supplier elsewhere to make your own... Just that this style come embedded in the case already. https://m.alibaba.com/product/60554935173/Premium-high-quality-Detachable-Magnetic-cell.html?s=p&spm=a2706.7843667.1998817009.13.Ykz0fp
