  1. Wayne Jueschke tools (it they're new from Wayne) run from about $35 to $45 for bevelers, veiners, thumbprints, mule feet and the like and from $60 to around $100 for his geometrics and baskets with price depending on size and complexity. New Hackbarth tools are priced similarly to Wayne's if they are stainless tools. I've recently seen a catalog for Gore tools and they are in the same ballpark as well. I don't know much about the CLT tools but if they are very high quality tools like the other makers you listed, they will be similar in price too.
  2. I wouldn't say the Barry King edgers are middle of the road, they are very good edgers. I have three Ron's edgers (round edge edgers), one Horse Shoe Brand (round bottom edger) and one Barry King bissonnette edger. They are all very nice tools and I'd say the Barry King is as good as any of them. I've never tried the Bob Douglas edgers but I have a couple of his awl blades and if his edgers are anything like the awl blades then they are great too.
  3. Great idea! Thanks for sharing this with the rest of us. Little "tricks" like this one really helps folks like me from burning through too many hides trying to do decent work.
  4. I'll take this one: H&K USP 9/40 full size - ASP red gun $30 shipped I'll send you a PM about it.
  5. Who makes a good matting tool? I like the looks of the impressions from the one on the Leatherworker.net home page, does anyone know who the maker for that stamp is? Most of my tools are Barry King and Hackbarth. I've checked out the Barry King site but the photos of the impressions you get from the medium checker matting tools aren't very clear - the checkering isn't visible at all in the pictures. Any recommendations for a good matting tool maker are appreciated. Thanks! T

  12. I'm using a granite surface plate and it works great. It's a 12"x18" two ledge surface plate so the total thickness is around 6 inches for most of the work surface. I like it quite a bit.
  13. Just an update...these arrived last Friday and they are very nice tools!
  14. I'll take the #3 bar basket stamp if it's still available. PM sent.
  15. I have three leather braiding books that I'd like to sell. I bought them thinking I would eventually give braiding a go but I really enjoy carving and stamping so I just don't think I'll ever get around to braiding. The three books are as follows. Encyclopedia fo Rawhide and Leather Braiding by Bruce Grant - $18 shipped in the continental USA Braiding Fine Leather by David Morgan - $13 shipped in the continental USA How to Make Whips by Ron Edwards - $17 shipped in the continental USA All three books are in like new condition. Feel free to PM or email if you have any questions about these books.

  17. Is the Douglas Versa Groover still available?
  18. I'll take group 6 if it's still available. I'll call in a couple hours (it's a bit early yet).
  19. Thanks for the replies fellas. It sounds like I won't need one any time soon but at some point in the distant future I may. I've got plenty to learn before I get to that point though.
  20. So I purchased these two books. Both books have good information but Sheridan Style Carving is definitely more comprehensive. I can see why so many people said good things about it. In my opinion, Sheridan Style Carving is the better of the two books for a beginner. Now I need to get a few more tools and practice, practice, practice.
  21. Here is a rookie question. What are splitters generally used for? In the leatherworking tools book by Al Stohlman, it says they are used to taper the ends of straps for splice joints skiving relatively narrow pieces of leather very consistently. I've looked around here a bit and it looks like people also use splitters to skive lace to a desired thickness. Is that it? So far my leatherwork has been limited to making small pocket cases and a couple belts. I plan to do more carving and stamping as well as some knife sheaths and gun holsters. Do I really need a splitter for this type of work?
  22. I only have experience with the Ecoflo antique from TLF but it looks like Feibings makes antique finish and stain. The Ecoflo is easy to apply but I haven't found a color I really like. How is the Feibings? Does someone else make a really good antique finish. Also, what's the difference (if any) between an antique finish and antique die?
  23. Thanks for the replys! I'll check out Sheriden Leather Outfitters.
