I hope someone can identify this leather / skin.  It was used to trim the interior of an Italian sports car from the 1960's.  It is used on the instrument panel, top of dash, shift boot and some parts of the center console.

    - The surface is "bumpy" or textured.

    - VERY thin - about 0.010" / .25mm.  It is bonded to a cloth material for support.

    - No repeatable pattern noticed - even in the larger areas.

    Pictures attached. Thanks,

    Dennis

Since there’s a teat involved, bison/ water Buffalo. My first thought was shark, but then the boob….

I'm definitely gonna try that trick.  I've never heard of that mixture before. Thank you.

Like I said, mix it the tip of a teaspoon too a bowl of warm water. I bag of oxalic acid will last you years. Home Depot has it, as others. Take a bar of saddle soap and a shampoo bottle. Scrap a little in the bottle and add hot water… that bottle will give you a saddle soap mix to use. A little shot of the bottle, with that little bit of tsp, and warm water in a bowl. Sponge. You should always use a saddle soap water mix on your leather when tooling anyway. Make the driest piece of leather look grade A. Give it a try, I think you’ll like the results.

  3. The spots are from your hands. Glue, oil, dirt etc. Try cleaning before dying with tsp (leather bleach) mixed with a little saddle soap. Very little tsp is needed in the mix. Too much will burn the leather. Your leather will look like the picture in the catalog when you ordered it, and not what you actually received. My 2 cents.

Its been a while since I have done any leather work, but I am getting my supplies back out and gonna do some projects. I had been wanting to dye with an airbrush for awhile, and may just that with the next go around.  I am looking for any and all recommendations for airbrush use.

What dye do you use? Full stregnth or diluted? Why do you dilute with and ratio? Anything...  thank you!!!

Bro, i bought my rig in 1994. With an extra needle. I’ve never had to use the extra needle. Badger 155 anthem, sim air spar max compressor. Never had an issue. Never dyed without it. One time, black dye, never again… one time…

Looks like it ought to be hanging from a coat peg in a lodge in the mountains.  WOW.  Amazing.  Such workmanship...I would be afraid to wear it out and about; fearful of getting it scuffed up.  Beautiful!!!!

Thanks PastorBob, very cool! I’m actually afraid of getting hit in the head from behind and robbed for it. Sad to say, but it’s the world we live in.

    That looks amazing!

It makes me want to put it on and go shoot some aliens! :-)

Seriously great work. The colour and surface combination is perfect.

Thanks bud. Big aliens fan. From HALO to Predator. Aliens are real. Especially here where I live in Texas. Ha!

Its friggin awesome!!!!  That has to weigh a few pounds though lol. I would gladly tote it around.

It does have some weight to it. Especially with the leathers I used for backing the caiman. I used a side from Tandy that is actually way too expensive for lining, but I figured why go cheap now…. And it was handy on hand! Thanks man… I’m digging the alien comment from up above, just watched the Predator prequel, yeah, I can dig it!

OK, I think I found my answer...with a compound feed system the needle moves back and forth in a pendulum motion, on thinner material it moves a fixed distance. on thicker material the needle foot is moved up higher, changing the distance of travel...and shortening the stitch length. learned a couple things today, that and.....

don't stitch the belt loop so close to the edge that when I'm stitching the edge the belt loop rides up under the foot and sends the stitch clear off the sheath !  Oh well, still learning...

It’s sewing threw thicker material while still pulling the same length of thread as it was while sewing the thinner material. Unless you add stitch length you’re gonna lose a fraction of an inch every stitch. In an inch Theres the lost stitch.

Of that's a relief! I was honestly quite worried that I'd screwed up somehow! Thank you so much!! :)

Also thanks for the advice @tsunkasapa. @Dwight, @Hags and @Silverd! Really appreciate the input! I should have clarified that I only just used water to clean/"deglaze" it cause I read elsewhere on here that deglazer is generally unnecessary unless there's a particular issue (oily hands or similar). But I am curious as to the reasons behind your suggestion to pre-oil for non-black dyes? This may seem like a silly question, but I thought the whole point of needing to deglaze leather before dying is so as to remove the oils in there to get a better spread of the dye?

Cheers to you as well @Garyak! I only just got into leatherwork so I've been trying to not go overboard buying things yet, haha.. But I have looked into airbrushes a bit already cause it's been recommended to me a few times now :) Fingers crossed I'll be able to afford it... One day, haha

I bought my badger 155 and spar max compressor in 1994. It won’t die. One of the top 5 best investments I’ve made among this entanglement of shiny things you think you need. ️ And so worth it on saving funds down the road. Plus there’s so much room for error when brushing Vs wiping on. You wipe on dye it’s there, that dark and only can get darker. Airbrush you decide the color, from the lightest brown to the darkest tint. You can cut those dyes by 50% with denatured alcohol too.

  10. Made this holster with turtle tail. Had to do quite a bit of fleshing to get maximum use from it. 6 sq inches of useable leather is hard to stretch. A 1” belt sander w/120 grit and a feel for what you’re doing and you can make use of the rock hard 1/2” thick outer edges. Turtle puts off more dust than any other leather I’ve used so it’s best done outside. It takes more work than other exotics, but it’s definitely an attention getter. Sewing it together was easy peazy on the 29k except in one area where I could’ve skived it thinner, but the China patcher handled that like it should’ve. Customer loves it and that’s all that matters. Be great to make a costume out of,  And what I’ve been told they’re tasty too. I dunno about that, but I’ll eat anything with gravy…

Thank you garyak, I don’t have an airbrush to apply the resist, is it it possible to apply any resist to leather without an airbrush or will it just end up looking messy? Thanks

    bn

It is. In a rush I’ll apply with a sponge or wet cloth. Pro resist is thick and drys quickly. Wet what ever you use to avoid streaks. If the finish is too shiny like I think it is, after alls said and done, I apply a satin acrylic finish. Knocks the shine out.

  12. From my experience, when a machine has been sitting uncared for for years and is displayed for sale that way, they dont care about, and probably dont know anything about it. They throw out a crazy price with a wish and prayer. I dont grant either so I let them know i cant activate that super power and give them my offer. If its not acceptable, I’ll point out the problems that will need to be addressed and how much that will cost. If still no, I leave. 95% of the time they will call back, willing to deal…. Trash, bees, mice, spiders, dirt, or dust, none if that will deter me if the machine is on spot for my needs.
I’ve managed to acquire a gang of machines for less than a fraction of the asking price, and a fraction of a fraction of the new price.  Best find so far has been my 145w205 long arm. Seller wanted 2000$. A few hours later it was mine….. 175$ delivered… doesn’t matter where its been, its where its going..
