Round/Head Knives Gomphs, Henckels, Osbornes, Harrington
Tequila replied to Colt Hammerless's topic in Old/Sold
Paul, This maybe a real dumb question of these three 3, 6, 9 which would you say is the sharpest and which will hold an edge better? I’m new to head knives but I like the old stuff better than what I’ve seen coming out of factories lately. Charlie -
Ok, I’m at a point that I’m ready to get 1 or 2 new edge bevelers and need some education. After going through old posts on Leatherworker, internet searching, etc. I’ve found precious little about different types, lots about sharpening though. For instance the difference between a round and western beveler, which might be better a round or Bisonette beveler, and just what the heck is a Osborne Concord beveler anyway?

Sharpening Round Knife Alternatives Good Enough?

The machine is a Cobra 26. When the needle broke it not only knocked out the timing but apparently it also moved the needle assembly. The first time I re-timed it while it was working the feed dog was too far back, so I had to re-time the feed dog then move the needle assembly to get it centered in the hole. Sounds easy enough but in reality it was a lot of back and forth between the two and fine tuning to get running the way I wanted. If someone has the same type of machine and wants the details I’d be glad to share.

Problem solved with the help of Tony from Leather Machine
-
I broke a needle the other day which knocked the machine out of time (needle was not going into the hole on the presser foot), I spoke to Leather Machine and it was an easy fix. The problem now is that the reverse lever moves up and down while I’m sewing, when I hold it down for reverse stitching I can feel like it’s riding on the lobe of a cam, that’s just the way it feels to me. What could be causing this and what would be the fix?

@suzelle if that manual works for you here’s another that you might find helpful. Juki_LS-341N_Engineers_Manual.pdf
-
@suzelle I’m not sure if this will help, this is the manual that I downloaded for a Juki that my machine was based on. Juki LS-341N InstructionManual.pdf

@TomE I agree with you 100%, I actually found an old post where a member shared the Juki owner’s manual that several machines are clones of, it is much better than the guide that I got. And thank-you so far so good!

@ScottEnglish I’m not sure if these guys https://www.buckleguy.com/ ship international but they’ve got a good selection of leather and weights.

Thanks Wizcrafts! Yes, that was one of the things that Al Bane mentioned in his video, he has some good pointers, I just wish someone would put out a couple of videos for the first time user, maybe not to a specific machine but more like good practices and tips. Something like when to use a shorter/longer stitch, needle size/thread size relationship, how to know when your bobbin runs out of thread and what you have to do if it does @suzelle thanks for the words of encouragement. I think though that I’m not the only one dancing with a new partner, how’s it going for you??

I got a new Cobra 26 last week so as you might guess I’m a noob to machine sewing. I spent part of my weekend practicing and trying the different to use the lessons I learned watching Al Bane, AAron from Maker’s Leather, and others videos. Well somehow, some way I messed up the machine, turns out I broke a needle then realized that I knocked the machine out of time (the needle was hitting behind the hole in the presser foot). I felt frustrated, confused on what I did, and nervous that I was going to have to send my new machine back to get it fixed. I also noticed something else, not every time but often, when I went to pull the leather out I would have 3 pieces of thread coming out of the bobbin. So here’s where this story takes a good turn, Tuesday (they were closed Monday) I called Leather Machine Co and received the answers to all my questions, here’s what I found out: 1. The bobbin thread issue was because even though the needle and presser foot were up I was still taking it out too soon, I had to make sure the take up lever was all the way up. That fixed that problem. 2. I did knock the machine out of time! I spoke to the head mechanic (Tony) at Leather Machine. He first texted me a picture of what I’d need to adjust then he walked me through the repair. One screw, a little back and forth and the timing was fixed. Now I know how to adjust it if I ever knock it out again. Once that was done and with a little more practice under my belt, I was able to start sewing up my latest project. While to an expert it may not be perfect, for my first try I’m happy. I’m a loooong way from being good and I’ve got a lot to learn, but I did learn from this experience. I also want to add that if you’re like me and don’t have a ton of experience consider Leather Machine Company they were very patient, took the time to listen to what I was saying and made me think that I made the right decision to buy from them.

Looks really good! One question, how did you dye the black lettering and tooling background? When I dye lettering I can never get the edges so clean and sharp.

UPDATE Well I’ve got good news (at least to me ) yesterday the sewing machine was delivered. I had called the vendor this week and explained that if I didn’t get the delivery by Thursday I felt that I would be forced to cancel the order. The owner of company got involved, made some high level calls to the trucking company, he understood my position and kept me fully informed. As I said in my previous post, I don’t blame the vendor for what happened, it was the trucking company’s fault. So now I’ve got my new sewing machine unpacked and setup, all I’ve got to do now is figure out how to use it. I won’t hesitate to buy from the vendor again, but in the future I’d pay a premium NOT to use that trucking company.

Thanks I’ll post as things progress.

Or just call the credit card company and dispute the purchase

@Handstitched no update from their end, no calls, no emails, nada, zip, nothing From my end, well…I’m considering my next move, I’ve been patient but it’s been over a month.

Advice on selling my Cowboy 3500 please
Tequila replied to Tallbalde's topic in Leather Sewing Machines
@Tallbalde I would love it, but right now it’s a little out of my price range, but if you get a buyer down this way I’ll be happy to help you out and pick it up and deliver it for you (no cost). -
@Dwight I don’t understand when you say “properly moistened”, how wet is that? The couple of times that I wet molded it took overnight to dry, so I’m guessing that I must have over-wetted the leather. Thanks for any advice.
