I'm thinking of making a briefcase or two as Christmas gifts for my family this year. Initially I was just going to do a standard billet and buckle arrangement, but when I looked at examples online I found that most of them had straps that seemed to weave in and out of the lid of the case, as well as the back...hard to explain what I mean... What I can't see about this method is how the strap is attached...is it just woven through all the slots in the leather and left 'loose', or is it stitched on someplace? I haven't had any success finding anything about it. See the attached image for what I mean. (the briefcase below is from Longview Leather, a supplier out in Calgary. Just figured I'd cite my sources) Can anyone enlighten me?

the rounded detail behind the billet straps looks really nice, but was actually a solution found to hide a mistake i made punching holes in the wrong place!© ©Barking Rooster 2013

as the name suggests - this is my 4th go at making a satchel. It is a design on progress, as each version has improvements basd on the lessons learnt on the previous bag. Completely handstitched, with the pieces cut from the hide freehand with a Round knife.© ©Barking Rooster 2013 www.barkingrooster.co.uk

Hi, I was thinking about embarking on my first laptop bag, and Have a good idea about how I'm going to pattern it out, but I was wondering what people were using for the padding inside the laptop compartment. I was kinda thinking about using automotive headliner, since it has a nice soft side, and foam behind it, and comes in several colors. Any thoughts on this?

I am in the process of making a bag similar to the hermes depeche briefcase. Its definitely a daunting task and i have recently been stuck on making the handles. http://thumbnail.image.rakuten.co.jp/@0_mall/maison/cabinet/item-spec10/6000031301.jpg As you can see there is something inside the leather and i dont know what to put inside. i was thinking maybe something like in this video at 1:15 theres something that he puts into the handle and i wanted to know if that could work although i have no idea what that is, maybe rubber? Also i dont have the filetuesue or whatever its called from mando (the edge burning tool) and i know that hermes uses that to finish edges. If i follow Bob Park's tutorial on finishing edges without doing the polishing is it possible to get the same kind of matte edges that hermes has? Thanks

Im going to attempt and make my own messenger bag. I think I can do it. Im going for this style http://cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0043/9252/products/vintage-messenger_1024x1024.jpg?279 Looks like they made the mag and then flipped in inside-out...am I right? I have tried making bags in the past and have gotten to the part where I need to flip it inside-out but the leather is too heavy to do so... Anybody have any idea what Oz. leather this could be? Hey everyone, im new to leather working and so far so good with some saddlebags I have made. My friends birthday is coming up and I want to be able to make this bag for his bike. http://www.brooksengland.com/images/cache/shop/shop_bags/tool_bags___holdalls/challenge_tool_bag/pictures/2794_w800_h600_vamiddle_jc95.jpg The sides of the bag look interesting... Anyone have any tips of what they are doing?

Hey all, I'm working on making a hip bag for my wife and she told me the kind of clasp she wanted. This one from Tandy is what I got: https://www.tandyleatherfactory.ca/en-cad/search/searchresults/11507-00.aspx It's called a "tuck clasp". It says that it requires 2 rivets to attach, but when I opened it I could only see a place for one in the top part of the clasp. The bottom clasp has two little steel tabs on the back. It has no instructions included on how to attach. Has anyone installed one of these on a bag or purse or something? Any ideas on how to install?

Terribly sorry if this has come up recently (I searched before posting, I swear I did), but I am trying to put handles on a bag that I just made (my first attempt at making something more complicated than a wallet). I'm pretty satisfied with it (it's a sort of Gladstone/Doctor's bag), but now I'm getting worried about screwing it up. I had planned to cut a bar of leather, fold it in half, stitch most of it to itself, and then stitch the rest into the bag, as is pretty common with purses and the like. However, this bag is a good 16x10x12, and I mean for it to be able to carry my books and lunch and whatever else I need. In other words, I need it to carry what I would reasonably carry in a messenger bag or smallish backpack. Should I be worried about the strength/integrity of the bag and handles using this method? Should I use an intermediate metal ring or loop between the handles and the body of the bag? Should I use rivets as well as stitching to make it extra strong? My stitching seems awfully strong usually, but I've never made anything that would get quite this much abuse before and am concerned. Thanks all!

Last post for today before going at the restaurant for diner with friends (yes, diner if you check the time of the post: I live in Europe and Earth is not flat), a large bag (approximately 50 cm or 20" wide at the top) which the decoration is once more obviously inspired by Native cultures. I chose to stylise the buffalo skull, being everything but confident in the result if I had attempted to make one more realistic. Realism is I think much easier to achieve with tooling and dyeing, techniques I do not have tried yet, therefore a bit of abstract was more appropriate. I went to some North and South Dakota reservations with it at fall 1996, where I gave a hand for a few days on a housing project with Habitat for Humanity (in Eagle Butte, Cheyenne River Sioux Indian Reservation) and many people approached me to inquire where I got it. I consider this was a compliment. Thank them and may Wakan Tanka bless them.
