I've acquired a Washington State Fur Trapping License and joined a local Fur Trapping group and now have access to local fur. My walking foot sewing machines (Ferdco 206 and Ferdco 1245) are not suitable to edge sew panels of fur together to form clothing or accessories. I've researched specialized chain stitch sewing machines for sewing and would like some comments or suggestions. There seems to be a very limited number of current manufactures and seem to be specialized to specific types of leather fur (coyote, raccoon, etc). Since I am new to this, I would appreciate and experience or places to find more practical sewing machine information.

Hi All, just wanted to post something. Have been lurking around for the last couple of months. Still very new to leather craft. Im about 2 months in. Here is one of my most recent collars. It was an experiment and its not too bad. The dye work is a bit poor on the coloured parts, especially the black marks ?(I have since got hold of some leather paint instead of using dye), so hopefully the next ones will be cleaner. Hand aged hardware, rabbit fur accent and padded. All hand stitched. As a total beginner I'm pretty happy with it.

I've been scouring this site for information on industrial sewing machines. I'm looking for a machine to do rugging for taxidermy. It needs to go through 2-6 layers of 11-18oz felt and the hide (bear, coyote, etc). I have previously used industrial sewing machines for garments, so these heavy duty machines are new to me. From what I've read on this site I'd like to try find a Consew 206RB-5 (or any subclass with reverse) or a Cowboy machine, maybe the 3200. I'm open to other machines that have a reverse and large capacitity bobbin. Before I make the plunge can anyone give me some feed back on what walking foot machine would be good for me or should I be looking for something with a rolling foot? Should I find something to sew up to 1/2" thickness or is that overkill?

I've been busy setting up a new business making taxidermy full mask sporrans - I've only been for 3 leatherwork classes but I had a great teacher so I got off to a good start! Hope you like them - just so you know, everything I use is sourced from roadkill so nothing is killed for my work

Hi, I'm going to try my hand at making an Ugg style snow boot for my toddler. I've done a bit of research and am trying to decide between using shearling scraps or rabbit fur hides. Never worked with hair on hide before and am expecting a few surprises. Couple Questions: The exterior of ugg boots are nice suede and I'm trying to figure out if I should use a separate piece of suede attached to the hairless side of the hides. I don't see how they can get those big shearling pieces with a perfect uniform suede finish on the back using just one hide. Any opinions? I'm not sure what to do with the edge of fur hide, possibly sew on a trim or edge binding around the tops and edges or maybe just do an overlay with thin decorative strips of 3oz, kind of like what you'd see with wingtips. Thanks in advance, KD

I am trying to get my glove operation underway to fill the needs of the multiple retail stores in my area. I craft hand-made baseball/softball fielding gloves that keep the look of the older generation of gloves along with modern features that will changes the player's perspective for a high-quality glove. Besides making high-end gloves, I have created leather seat cushions and the "Slinger", a leather drink holder that is worn around your neck with a strip of fur sewn to the leather strip to maximize the chance of forgetting you're even wearing it. Every glove created is all by hand whether that is cutting, punching, or stamping. In order to be time efficient for the next phase of production, outsourcing some of the process will increase productivity but reduce the percentage of profit. Please take the time and look at my website and also please feel free to donate in this campaign I am trying to raise $1,000 in. The cost of one of those gloves are never going to be that low again! http://kozickisports.com Rocket Hub campaign http://www.rockethub.com/projects/41867-dna-fielding-glove I hope you like to see some true genuine leather products that's actually made in America! I present here the two first prayer pipes (also called elbow pipes) I ever made, having carved the bowls in steatite (soap stone) - I never carved stone before that. The stems are made of various wood and materials, and those interested to know more about these pipes and how they are made can find a full description with more and better photos on my website. They are shown here with the pouches I made later on. These pouches are made of cow leather lined with a coated cloth and the decorations are of various stuff: hairy foal skin, dyed snake skin, chicken leg skin (I didn't even know it exists before I found some on an online shop!), glass beads (loom with heddle beading) and gemstone beads, feathers, hairpipes, fox fur, Corian... Fully hand sewn and own design with obviously and once more a strong Native Influence (many years ago a psychic, however right on so many things that could be verified, told me it was the very first time I was living as a white man! After all, perhaps that this influence comes from outside and inside...?)
