Questions about Pfaff 130
Aquinnah posted a topic in Leather Sewing MachinesI just purchased a 1950's Pfaff 130 to sew garment leather on. I'm having a hard time getting the leather to feed through the feed dogs. From what I've researched I am seeing that I may need to upsize my motor but I also think I need a walking foot. My question is, can I safely attach a walking foot to this machine without damaging the machine? Is it made to handle it? If not I am in the market for a machine that can sew between 2.5 - 6 oz. leather. Any and all input is appreciated. Thank you.

westernatelier posted a topic in Clothing, Jackets, Vests and ChapsMY FIRST COBRA CREATION!!!! Completely sewn on my Cobra Class 18!!! This is me in the pics rockin something I made...feels good to say that (and that its a perfect fit)!!!.I DID IT!!!! This is such a proud moment for me.It feels good to accomplish a project when you find a new hobby! I have spent the last couple months turning two leather hides, deer skin lacing, sequins, and handmade turquoise satin piping into my own custom creation!!! This chrome finished peplum leather jacket has blood, sweat, and tears rolled into it and I couldnt be more proud to finally showcase something I made (the first thing Ive made) from scratch all by myself!
I am about to start training with a local leather crafter who is going to teach me how to make leather garments. I'm very excited about this! He's given me some research to do on equipment, and I was hoping people here might be able to help me out. I am trying to figure out what type of sewing machine I should get for my new shop. Previously, I have always hand-sewen things, but that is no-longer an option. I've been researching companies like Consew, Cowboy, Jujuki, Pfaff, and Singer, but I am having a hard time understanding the pros and cons of the many different machines offered by each company (much less how they compare to competing company's equivalents). I have also spent a LOT of time reading the threads in this directory. It has been very informative, and I am glad I thought to come here and check out the forum. What I am hoping to get out of this thread-posting is a recommendataion of specific models of sewing machines that I can research and compare to each other to help me make a selection. I'm feeling a bit too overwhelmed with all of the info out there and I'm hoping some of you can help me focus my search a bit. I am primarily going to be working with light-weight garment and light-weight chap leathers, though occasionally I may work with something slightly heavier. What are some good models of sewing machines that YOU use and would recommend that would work with these types of leather? Thank you in advance, both for taking the time to read this long post as well as to reply. I look forward to hearing from you all! Respectfully, Paul
Consew 206Rb Vs. Juki 1541S
KushielsTart posted a topic in Leather Sewing MachinesHi everyone - I've read completely through the guide to choosing a sewing machine, and have it narrowed down to the consew 206RB and the Juki 1541s, and now I'm stuck. They are both around the same price (although I found a dealer in Dallas who has a Juki clone called a Typical GC0605A for about $300 less). I make fashion style body harnesses, corsets, belts, and some garments. So far I've been sewing on a Janome MC6600, which does ok most of the time with very light leather, but gives up over thicker seams and occasionally just decides it doesn't want to sew something that its been working on all day with no problem. I generally don't sew anything more than single 5-8oz pieces or multiple pieces around 10 ounces total, and I figure if I really need to, then I can hand stitch pieces heavier than that. For the heavy pieces its usually not being attached to anything, but is decorative edge stitching. Which machine do you think sounds more appropriate? I would be upgrading to the servo motor for either. Thanks so much for any advice.

LauraRose posted a topic in Leatherwork ConversationHello everyone, I'm new at this, so sorry if I ramble a little I'm a year 12 textiles student and for my major work I'm crating a Steampunk inspired leather dress. The dress will have a large skirt and a corset top. I want the leather to be quite sturdy, but I'm working with a regular sewing machine so it can't be too thick. I'm really just wondering if anyone can offer any advice on what sort of leather I should think about using (actually any advice at all would be hugely helpful). I need the leather to be supple, to allow freedom of movement, but I also want it to look quite sturdy. All advice will be taken and considered, I'd really appreciate any help you can give Thankyou.
